Agenda

OverviewThe Strategies for MSL Training workshop jump-starts those new to the training function. The curriculum consists

of ten modules of accelerated learning that provide a solid foundation of skills and knowledge required to lead a

training organization. Each of the modules includes a wide range of topics for discussion and practice.

Training is about taking information and making it easy to learn and apply. Everyone learns in different ways, and there are unique characteristics of Medical Science Liaisons that must be understood when designing training. During this session, we will explore how people learn and how to ensure that your training meets the needs of MSLs.

Learning objectives:

The MSL Learner

Understand the different ways people learn new information and skills

Identify unique characteristics of how MSLs learn

In this session, we will discuss how to create a training strategy based on the needs of your organization and the capabilities of training team.

Learning objectives:

The Role of a Training Leader

The key to maintaining control and organization of training is to keep a curriculum. A curriculum represents the body of knowledge that a person needs in their role, divides it into distinct elements, and sequences them into programs where it is taught to MSLs.

Learning objectives:

Managing the MSL Curriculum

Understand the impact of having a curriculum

Identify ways to organize your MSL curriculum

Practice using a curriculum as a tool to manage training requests

Define courses, programs, and content

Strategies for MSL Training

If the purpose of training is to improve performance, then it is essential to evaluate whether the training was effective. During this session, we will learn four levels of evaluation that can be used to improve the training and demonstrate that it was useful. We will also discuss various perspectives about creating assessments and tests. Finally, to evaluate training, you must start with well-written learning objectives.

Learning Objectives:

Evaluating Learning

How to ensure that training plans start with the end in mind

Be able to apply the Kirkpatrick levels of evaluation

Learn to create and use assessments and tests

Demonstrate how to write quality learning objectives

After MSLs leave the classroom or turn off their computer, the true test begins. During this session we will discuss how to make learning stick as MSLs return back to their daily work. We will learn ways to set up managers to be competent coaches and methods for keeping content top of mind until it becomes engrained in the day-to-day activities of the MSLs.

Learning Objectives:

Making Learning Stick

Define the role of training versus the role of the manager in learning

Identify ways to help prepare managers to coach new skills and knowledge

Learn methods, including microlearning, for reinforcing knowledge after a training is complete

A well-designed training program is only effective if it is also well delivered. During this session we will identify what good facilitation looks like and how to work with those who help you deliver your program to ensure they go beyond the standard lectures to make learning effective.

Learning Objectives:

Facilitation Basics

Recognize what good facilitation looks like

Understand how to efficiently prepare guest speakers to deliver the program

Learn how design impacts the effectiveness of facilitation

The next critical decision is to determine if you will build or buy your training program. There are many types of training vendors that range from those that offer public programs through those that will create custom content just for you. Regardless of your decision, it is your job as the training leader to manage the execution of the training project. During this session, we will review the essential parts and tools of a project plan for training.

Learning Objectives:

Building or Buying MSL Training

Learn how to decide to build or buy training

Practice a method for effectively identifying and selecting training vendors

Practice using a training project plan to ensure execution of your project

Learn how to budget for training

The way a training team adds value is by taking quality content and adding learning methods to make it easier to understand and apply. This involves taking a learner through a specific series of events that engages them in the material, provides more in-depth understanding of a topic, and allows them to practice using that information until it becomes a capability. The content design process is completed before a single PowerPoint page is created.

Learning Objectives:

Training Content Design

Discover how trainers apply learning methodology to improve content

Be able to craft a learner’s journey to engage learners

Be aware of many training methods and how to select the right approach

Use a design document to prepare your training design

Whether you are going to build materials yourself, or hire a provider to do it for you, it is essential to know the basics of instructional design. This includes understanding what high-quality materials look like and the basics of building eLearning.

Learning Objectives:

Instructional Design Basics

Establish standards for high-quality training materials

Learn the steps to turn content into eLearning and deploy it

MSL Training teams may have too few resources to engage top providers or to purchase the best tools. During this session, we will reveal ways to create high-quality learning with minimal resources.

Learning Objectives:

Training on a Limited Budget– Tips & Tricks

Learn how to deploy eLearning without a million-dollar learning management system

Learn how to get materials developed using crowdsourcing for pennies on the dollar

Learn how to repurpose existing materials into multiple learning programs

Acceleration Point brought our training strategy to life with a meaningful medical curriculum, engaging design, and leveraging technology.”

Amanda KrumnowHead, Training and Development, Global Medical Affairs at Shire

Tiffany PelaAssociate Director, Field Medical Training- Medical Managed Care MSOI at Sanofi Genzyme

As field medical personnel, we look at ourselves as therapeutic educators, but actual training is much more than that. The sessions covered the foundations of adult learning, working with vendors, and evaluating success. The best part was hearing from other new trainers their ideas and talking through the hurdles. A lot was learned and professional friendships were developed.”
