Class of 1946 † Eugene F. “Gene” Johannes Passed February 6, 2017 Age 89

Gene joined the army after graduat-ing Sacred

Heart, serving in Japan for two years as an MP with

the 19th Infantry, 24th Division. He married Glorianne in 1951

and worked for Kansas Distributors for 27 years,

retiring in 1977. Gene was preceded by three

brothers and his beloved daughter. He is survived by his wife and brother Lowell.

Class of 1962 † Mary Lewis Gray

Passed December 1, 2016 Age 72 Mary was a probation officer for Denver. She is

survived by her husband John D., who is a retired Denver police officer to whom she was married for 47 years. Avid animal lovers, Mary and

John lived on a ranch in Strasburg and upon

retirement they hit the road in their RV and traveled the

USA. When John D. wrote to us, he expressed that Mary spoke of her time at Sacred

Heart and the good memories she had here.

Mary is survived by her sister Lynn.

Passed March 14, 2017 Age 71 Paulette was born in Kearney, NE.

After graduat-ing high school,

Paulette had many jobs, but most enjoyed

being a secretary for the Sheet Metal

Workers Union Local No. 29 and being an accomplished seamstress in her business,

Paula’s Alterations in the Eaton Hotel in Old Town. Paulette’s brother Dick Hoye preceded

her in death. She is survived by sisters Chris Jones ‘61,

Katie Schorling ’63 and Vickie Katz ‘65. Paulette’s pride and joy were her five grandchildren and

four step-grandchildren.

Stephanie recently graduated KU Med with her doctorate. † Michael J. Martin Passed August 27, 2017 Age 94

Michael Martin passed away at his rural home. Michael graduated from Kipp High School in 1940

and entered the U. S. Army in 1943 where he was awarded

the Bronze Star Medal in 1945. He was a staff sergeant

of Company D, 158th Inf. Regiment in the Philippine

Islands. Michael was a life-long Salina County

farmer-stockman and worked many years at the Saline

County ASCS office and was a loan officer as well.

Michael is preceded by his wife Elaine and son Michael John Martin ’80. He is

survived by his children Rose Jirak ’71, Kathleen Gilbert ’72, Pete ’73, Anne Dreiling ’75,

Connie Stika ’77, Bernadette Pinder ’78, Greg ’79, Maureen Riordan ’82, Pat ’83, Geralyn Kenney ’84

and Maria Cheney ’87.

Bishop George K. Fitzsimons Memorial Golf Tournament—31st Annual

On July 13th & 14th the Endowment Board of Sacred Heart Jr-Sr High School hosted another fine Golf Tournament and Banquet, in honor of the late Bishop George K. Fitzsimons, for the benefit of the Sacred Heart Endowment. The net revenue was over $17,900, which will be invested for the future needs of the school. Approximately 160 Sacred Heart supporters attended the Thursday evening banquet at the Salina Country Club. Clint Newton was the chairperson and emceed the evening. The Endowment Board President Mike Junk ‘84, provided an overview of the Endowment Fund and it’s direct impact on the school, and we were entertained by a questionnaire provided by Eric Muninger, SH Golf Head Coach and two members of the 2016-2017 State Championship Team; Quinten Smith and Rase Welsh. Friday morning brought an unexpected cloudy and slightly cooler atmosphere, which provided the 124 golfers a decent day. Grant Gotti and Andy Anderson provided a new feature to our golf tournament this year, the drone ball drop. Our winning ball drop participant was Max Humphrey.

The results of the tournament were as follows:

Are you ready for some football? Pictured below is Head Coach Garrett Galanski, along with his assistant coaches and team, praying after our August 25 soap scrimmage. The Knights started their season on the road at Minneapolis Friday, September 1 with a win 41-20.

All are invited to the Football BBQ September 24 11am-2pm in the High School Cafeteria. Tickets are $6 pp and can be purchased at the SHJSHS Business Office 8am—4pm.

Faculty/Staff News! The staff of St. Mary’s Elementary School and Sacred Heart Jr. Sr. High joined for a back to school dinner and social on Wednesday, August 30th. A chicken dinner was enjoyed by all with delicious desserts provided by Kathy Hale. Superintendent and Elementary School Principal Dr. Nick Compagnone, and Jr/Sr High School Principal John Krajicek, each provided a school update. Pictured at left is Mr. Krajicek introducing Bryce Woodall, our Industrial Arts Teacher. Making their mark one stride at a time. The Cross Country team

As a result of the overwhelming support during our auction last spring, many of our Itemless Items became summer projects including five water filtration systems, girls locker room floors, two new gymnasium wireless scoreboards (seen below), all student lockers repainted, parking lot repair, two transport vehicles and lastly a sidewalk connecting Sacred Heart Jr. Sr. High to the St. Mary’s Elementary School & Gymnasium. Are you ready for some football? Pictured below is Head Coach Garrett Galanski, along with his assistant coaches and team, praying after our August 25 soap scrimmage. The Knights started their season on the road at Minneapolis Friday, September 1 with a win 41-20.

All are invited to the Football BBQ September 24 11am-2pm in the High School Cafeteria. Tickets are $6 pp and can be purchased at the SHJSHS Business Office 8am—4pm.

Faculty/Staff News! The staff of St. Mary’s Elementary School and Sacred Heart Jr. Sr. High joined for a back to school dinner and social on Wednesday, August 30th. A chicken dinner was enjoyed by all with delicious desserts provided by Kathy Hale. Superintendent and Elementary School Principal Dr. Nick Compagnone, and Jr/Sr High School Principal John Krajicek, each provided a school update.
