The opening title sequence of step brothers starts off by telling us the institution of the film ‘Columbia Pictures Presents’ and before we see anything we see credits. In the first scene the first thing that we see is of a person piling cheese on to the top of a plate of nachos. At this point you’re expecting to see a young teen boy but in fact it’s a grown man, you see this as his head is peeping through the microwave whilst the cheese is melting. By doing the close up of the nachos and cheese you expect a young teen lad because its stereotyping them, they can’t cook, they don’t eat healthy etc. At this point there is an extreme close up of another middle ages man sniffing his underwear checking if it’s clean or not, which again makes us question his age. As it goes back to a long shot a women is explaining to the grown man eating nachos, cheese, coco pops and blueade for his breakfast which you assume will be his partner when in fact at the end of the clip he says ‘Goodbye mum’. With him sat there in his pyjamas and she’s explaining that she’ll be home for 11 you know it’s the morning and that what’s he’s eating isn’t what a normal 40 year old man would eat in the morning. There is then a close up of the TV screen which the game guitar hero’s is on as the camera goes to a long shot you see that it’s the grown man that was smelling his underwear playing on it, remembering that its early in the morning and he should really be getting ready for work. A man then shows up from behind him showing this middle aged man’s room in his POV, telling him he’s leaving for work, and the man is asking him to leave money for pizza and kicks up a fuss because he wants chicken wings and calls him ‘dad’. You can see he’s mad because it shows his face in a close up and he looks like he’s going to have a paddy because he’s not getting what he wants.

Visual Effects & Colour Scheme

With the colours that they both wear standout such as reds and whites. They blend in with the back ground of the locations. This shows the child like stereotype that they want everyone to know just by looking at their clothing and props around them. You can see in the room where he is playing guitar hero his rooms full of whites and reds and stands out from the greys. This stands out because of the way they act and how it makes them stand out from everybody else. They always tend to use bring colours to make what they want the audience to be focused on such as when he’s making the nachos and cheese its bright yellow and stands out and his white t-shirt that you can only see of him, which then makes you come up with the idea he is a teen.

Genre Conventions The genre of this film is comedy, straight away you can pick up on this because the opening title sequence is based on 2 middle aged men living at home with either their mum or dad. Waking up in the morning with tight fitted t-shirts on playing guitar heroes and asking your dad for money for pizza and then moaning when he doesn’t let you have chicken wings or waking up with children’s pyjamas on and eating nachos and cheese, coco pops and blueade for breakfast eating with your mouth open and watching women’s TV. You see all conventions and stereotyped shots of what people expect teenage boys to be like but when you realise that the teen aged boys are actually 40 year old men this shows everyone it’s a comedy.

Narrative Both characters are extremely childish and are spoken to by their parents like children ‘leave me money for pizza dad’ as his dad explains he’s only got £20 he reply’s angry ‘what if I want wings!?’. Its showing he still lives off his dad and doesn’t have a job otherwise he’d be on his way to work rather than playing his game. Both of them hardly make eye contact when speaking to their parent like any child would because there to distracted with the games or TV, but when they talk about something their interested in they suddenly focus, again like a little boy.

Editing Techniques At the end of a shot they cut it and straight away you see another

shot. The editing all looks quite plain and simple but this could also be referring to how their personalities are in the film. It goes from one shot to the next shot with a few cross hatches from one house with Dale to another house with Brennan.

Title Credit Design At the start of the sequence the title credits inform us of the institution, production etc. Once the film starts when the actor is shown their name comes up on screen as you can see with the Will Ferrell and John. C. Reilly. The writing is just simple and plain because this isn’t a big deal to the sequence, what is important is getting to know the characters and know there middle aged men that act like teen boys.
