Welcome to the second edition of the STEP newsletter. A great deal has happened since our first Newsletter and we wanted to let you know, how things are progressing in the wonderful world of STEP. You may recall in the May Newsletter, we celebrated reaching 100 students participating in the STEP program. We are please to announce that we have now reached around 130 students and are continually taking on new students in various roles across our Retail stores, within the Canning Vale Warehouse and within our Good Sammys Café in Canning Vale. The feedback from Students, Parents, Managers, Supervisors and Schools, has been fantastic. We have watched students make amazing progress across the board, whilst building their workplace skills and confidence. SCHOOL EXPOS Over the past few months Tanya and Dani have been to a number of School Expos and Parent Information Sessions promoting and advising people about the STEP program. These schools have included: Eastern Hills Senior High School Armadale Education Support Centre Gladys Newton School Canning Vale College Ursula Frayne Catholic College Cannington Community Education Support Centre Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre Rockingham Senior High School Education Support Centre Carey Baptist College As we aim to reach our next goal of 150 students and beyond, we continue to promote the benefits of work experience for students with a disability, in a safe and supportive environment, at Good Sammys . If you would like us to come out to your school to speak with parents, students and teachers alike, please do not hesitate to contact the STEP office on 9463 0560. TRAINEESHIPS We have had an exciting few months with many students showing promise to move into a School Based Traineeship. Last month we introduced you to our first School Based Trainee Danny, who continues to progress in leaps and bounds. This month we would like to introduce you to our two newest School Based Trainees Jarret Salter and Hunter Nees. Jarret is currently in year 10 at Lesmurdie Senior High School. He commenced work experience with us in February. Showing great enthusiasm and a solid work ethic, Jarrett embraced the opportunity to start a School Based Traineeship, and (like Danny) will be completing Certificate II In Warehousing with Good Sammy’s through this arrangement.

We wish Jarrett all the best and we are

sure that great things will become of

him. Welcome Jarrett.

Our other newest Trainee is Hunter

Nees. Hunter is currently in year 10 at

Canning Vale College.

Hunter commenced work experience

with us in May and like Danny and

Jarrett, showed great enthusiasm and a

strong worth ethic.

Hunter started his School Based

Traineeship in late June and is also

completing Certificate II In Warehousing

Congratulations to Hunter. We look

forward to assisting you in moving

forward in your transition from School

to work, over the coming couple of

years.

KIRANA PTY LTD

Good Samaritan Industries (GSI) has engaged the services of Registered Training Organisation (RTO) - Kirana Pty Ltd, to provide the training for our School Based Trainees as well as some of our existing workers.

Kirana will provide the training

resources and the trainers, who will

work closely with our Trainees and Staff,

to get them through all aspects of their

training.

Kirana is a Recognised Training

Organisation (RTO), who delivers quality

training solutions to people and

enterprise through training, education

and related human capital services.

Kirana is community minded and is

involved in many great community

initiatives.

We are delighted to be able to work

with a like minded organisation to

ensure that the Staff and Trainees

receive the best possible training and

support, throughout their journey.

STEP STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR

YEAR 10-13.

Nominations are now open for the 2016

GSI STEP Scholarship Program.

GSI is offering ten scholarships of

$1,000 to assist students with a

disability to access further training

and/or employment opportunities, to

get a head start in their training and

careers.

Previously, students have used their scholarships to assist with course fees and associated costs, as well as to purchase assistive technology to commence and complete further training in a variety of industries, including; Horticulture, business administration, science and technology and trades. Applications close on Friday September 23rd 2016 at 4pm. We will advise all applicants no later than Friday October 14th 2016 of results. Award ceremonies will be arranged in local areas convenient for the successful applicants in November.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

As mentioned earlier in the newsletter, the STEP program is always looking for students to become involved in work experience, across the Retail, Warehousing and Canteen areas of our organisation. If you have a student who would like to trial work experience in one of these areas in Term 3 and or Term 4, please contact us now and request an Expression of Interest Form.
