RS SERIES INDEX DRIVES

The introduction of the RS series indexdrive confirms Stelron's continuing commitmentto the design and manufacture of automationcomponents. These components are integratedintoalltypesofhighspeedmachinery.ThenewRSindexerhasmanyimprovementsoverolderdesigns.Thesearesomeofthestandardfeatures:

STANDARD FEATURES

• Large tooL steeL cam - hardened and cnc ground.• compact housing - machined on aLL six mounting surfaces.• universaL mounting on any of six sides.• many standard sequences using modified sine.• one piece crossed-roLLer bearing for support and

resistance to combined thrust, radiaL and moment Loading.• standard accuracy of +/- .001 @ 6" radius.• fixed center distance from input to output.• Lowest profiLe housings.• easy maintenance.

Indexerssimilartothishavebeenavailablesincethe1950's.Inthattimethesecomponentshaveprovento be effective solutions in many applications.Reliablecamdrivenindexerscanoperateathigherspeeds than pneumatic and electronic indexing.These cam operated devices require much lessmaintenancethanpneumaticdrives,andtheyareonlyafractionofthecostofelectronicindexing.

TheStelronRSindexerusesthesametypedesignandincorporatestherecentadvancementsin roller bearing technology. This new productusesaonepiececrossedaxisrollerbearing.Thisbearing provides superior support and stabilityto the output shaft while maintaining the mostcompactdesignavailabletoday.

Furthermore, indexers typically use aluminum forthehousingmaterialandsteelfortheinternalcomponents.The coefficient of thermal expansion of aluminum isapproximatelyTWOtimesthatofsteel.

STELRON “RS” INDEXER

Therefore,astheindexdriveheatsup,thealuminumhousing will expand greater than the internal followermechanism. This will enlarge the center distance andcan affect the pre-load in the globoidal type indexers. Thegloboidaltyperequiresmuchmoredisassemblytoremovetheoutputandchangethecamfollowers.Inorderto remove the follower assembly, the pre-load must bebacked-off before the assembly can be removed from thehousing.Thiswill involveun-coupling the indexer from theinputshaftconnectionandremovalofthegearreducerfromtheinputshaft.Onlythencantheoutputfollowerassemblyberemovedfromthehousing.Afterthenewcamfollowersare installed and the follower assembly placed back intothe housing, the maintenance personnel must once againsetthepre-load.Thisrequiresatechnicianfamiliarwiththeproperpre-loadingofgloboidalcamindexersandisusuallyonlydonebythemanufacturer.Thenthegearreducercanbere-mountedandtheindexerre-coupledtoanyotherinputshaftconnections.

CONVENTIONAL INDEXER

Theillustrationsaboveandtotheleftcomparethreebasicdesigns. The Stelron RS has the lowest overall height(compareHs,HrandHg).TherollerbearingintheRSunithas a 45 degree contact angle. This provides the widesteffective bearing spread of all three (compare Bs, Br andBg).The load center of the RS unit is right at the outputshaft mounting location, whereas the other types have aconsiderabledistanceto the loadcenter (seeMrandMg).This load center is the point about which moment loadsare calculated. The cam follower support of the RS andtheGloboidalarewithintheireffectiveloadcenters,buttheconventionaldesignhasaninternalmoment loadimposedduring the indexing of the load (see Or). Since the barrelcam styles (RS and conventional) have the cam followersoverthecam,theyareshorterinlengththentheGloboidaltype(compareLstoLg).

THESE ARE SOME OF THE FEATURES THAT MAKE STELRONTHE BEST CHOICE FOR ALL OF YOUR INDEXING REQUIREMENTS.

SPROCKET SELECTION

TPI = Teeth per Index = ID = 6.00 = 6.0 Chain Pitch 1.0

This is a directly driven conveyor, therefore the number of sprocket teeth and the number of stops of the indexer must be a WHOLE EVEN number and consistent with the chain pitch. Some choices are:

NUMBER NUMBER Ds

OF STOPS OF TEETH Sprocket Dia.

2 12 3.82

4 24 7.64

6 36 11.46

8 48 15.28

Only ONE of these choices provides a sprocketdiameter between 5 and 10 inches.Information on sprockets and chains can be found in the chain manufacturers catalog.

WEIGHT AND FRICTIONAL LOADS

Ws = Weight of each double sprocket = 22 lbs.Lc = Length of chain = (2 * 96) + (3.1416 * 7.64) = 216” = 18 ft.Wc = Weight of chain = 2 * 18 * 1.75 = 63 lbs.Wn = Weight of nests = (216 / 6) * 1.5 = 54 lbs.Wp = Weight of parts = (96 / 6) * 2.0 = 32 lbs.Wtot = (Wc + Wn + Wp) = 63 + 54 + 32 = 149 lbs.

Tf = Friction Torque = Wtot * µƒ * (Ds / 2)Tf = 149 * .3 * (7.64 / 2) = 171 in-lbs.

1.00” Chain Pitch @ 1.75 lbs/foot (2) Chain Strands Ds = Sprockets between 5” and 10” Dia. Weight per Part = 2 lbs. Weight per Nest = 1.5 lbs. T1 = Index Time = .5 seconds

T2 = Dwell Time = .5 seconds DI = Diameter of Idler = 4.00” WI = Weight of Idler = 2.0 lbs. µƒ = Coefficient of Friction = .30 CD = Center Distance of Sprockets = 96”

To Calculate the dynamic capacity at a required speed and life (Ta) use the following formula:

Ta = Tr Cs * Cl

Where Tr = Value from Table #1 Cs = Speed factor from Table #2 Cl = Life factor from Table #3

Example - Find the capacity of the following: RS-2, 6 - Stop, 270° Period @ 75 RPM & 32,000 Hours

Ta = Tr = 2325 = 1375 inch-lbs. Cs * Cl 1.12 * 1.51

Table #4 Above is based on one million revolutions of the output bearing. Impact loading requires a reduction of static capacity by a factor of 2 to 3.

Table #1 INDEXING CAPACITY

All of the above sequences use Modified Sine motion.

* RS-75 12-Stop is Type-2 only.

In the table above, the designations 16-2 and 24-2 are used for Type-2 units. These units provide two indexes for each revolution of the input shaft. This allows the timing to be half of that which is shown in the table. For example, the 24-2-120° unit operating at 50 indexes per minute has a cam shaft speed of 25 rpm. A single 360° turn of the cam shaft with a 120° index period would consist of: 60° for first index -- 120° of first dwell -- then, 60° for second index -- 120° of second dwell.

The Stelron RS series index drive can also be supplied as an oscillating drive. This is accomplished by changing the profile of the cam. These oscillators are dimensionally identical and incorporate the same internal components as the standard RS series indexer.

The RS oscillator will provide a smooth cam controlled rotary output motion for a given constant speed rotary input motion. This rotary output motion can then be converted to linear through some additional mechanism such as a connecting rod, crank, yoke assembly, etc... It should be noted that the conversion of rotary to linear motion is more effectively done by using the Stelron cam slide or reciprocator. Also, longer rotary output strokes can be provided with the Stelron “Rotary Only” Transpart.

All of the above sequences use modified motion. Additional sequences and strokes, not shown above, are also available (please contact the factory).

The table above is “B-10” capacity @ 50 rpm. Use the formula on page 6 to calculate the dynamic capacity at the desired speed and life.
