Razzle dazzle in blue for Casual Day 2014A Casual Day show and tell was held atSpier outside Stellenbosh last week, inwhich last year’s campaign results andthis year’s theme were announced.

Casual Day is the well-known fundraisingproject that has seen the South African pub-lic open its hearts to persons with disabili-ties, in exchange for the privilege to wearfun outfits to work, for almost two decades.

The theme for 5 September 2014 is Bringon the Bling. “If you have bling and blue, then wear it,” said master of ceremonies,Casual Day ambassador and award-win-ning star of stage and screen, Terrence Brid-gette.

This year marks the 20th anniversary ofCasual Day.

It was announced that a whoppingR23,5 million was raised last year.

Some organisations were also honouredfor the most money raised as well as institu-

tions that sold the most stickers. The highlight of the morning was a rous-

ing talk by disability activist Marlene leRoux, director at Artscape for audience de-velopment and the Education Artistic Pro-gramme, who emphasised that disability isnot glamorous.

She inspired the audience with the storyof her life and how she overcame multipleobstacles.

“Don’t lumpallpeoplewithdisabilities to-gether; we are human beings,” le Roux said.

Her plea was for persons with disabilitiesto be treated with dignity and humanity.

She also called for persons with disabili-ties to be employed.

Le Roux was there to provide inspirationat the annual Casual Day event, billed as“Breakfast with the Stars”.

For more information on how toparticipate in Casual Day go to www.casual-day.co.za. The Drakenstein Association for Persons with Disabilities Choir entertained the guests.

“Met die bietjie wat ek gehad hetkon ek darem aan hom ’n paar stuk-kies klere en ’n paar skoene gee.

“Ek sien hom nog gereeld hierrond en my hart raak bly.”

In Desember 2013 het hy weer ’npaar kinderharte bly gemaak toehy hulle met lekkergoedpakkiesverras het.

Values taught tofirst-time campersNEIL FORTUIN

Athree-daycampheld forVisionAfriKaVlottenberg’s new Grade 8 intake hastaught participants not only how to settargets for them-selves, but alsothe value ofteam-playing.

Thethemeof theevent, which tookplace at the end ofJanuaryat theKanonkopwine farm inStel-lenbosch, was ‘life mapping’ – or settinggoals in order to provide individuals withenough direction to fulfil their dreams. After arriving at the campsite on the

slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains, thelearners, who were attending camp for thefirst time, were informed of the rules. They were also invited to pick sleeping

spots outside in an open field under thetrees, an invitation that they all accepted, even though theyweren’t very happy aboutit. After 10 minutes or so, however, the stu-dents were informed that, in fact, theywouldn’t be required to sleep outside, butinstead were to be given lovely rooms withlaminated floors and soft beds. The lessonfor them here was to not just blindly acceptwhat they are told, but to challenge thingsif they don’t think they are right or fair.Thenext activitywas intended tohelp the

learners develop more of a team spirit. Asa result, they were divided into teams andasked to take part in traditional “boere-sport” games suchas three-legged, sackandegg-and-spoon races as well as bobbing forapples. The final itemon the agenda, meanwhile,

was a night hike. Although some of the stu-dents were initially scared at the prospect, they all took part after the idea of “poten-tial” was explained, that is, everyone has

the potential to become what they want tobe. The next morning, the learners started

the day with a healthy breakfast and someexercise, before participating in a range of

sessions to ex-plore the main“life mapping”theme under sixkey headings:1. Dreams – eve-

ryone has them.2. Potential –

eachstudenthas thepotential tobecomean-ything they want to be.3. Responsibility – every learner has to

take responsibility for fulfilling their owndreams.4. Targets – theyneed to be set if individu-

als are to achieve their goals.5. Obstacles – some will inevitably come

along to deflect you off course.6. Support – that Vision AfriKa is there

to provide.Because a key aim was to make their

learning experiential and fun, an obstaclecoursewas set up to illustrate the term “ob-stacles”, for example. This activity helped to demonstrate that

thereareusuallyanumberofdifferentwaysto solve problems and that it is often aboutsimply looking at the issue in alternativeways. By working together, however, thestudents also learned the importance of ef-fective communication; of helping andguiding one another andof taking responsi-bility for their ownactions in order to bene-fit the rest of the team. This ethicmanifested itself in that, at the

end of the weekend, each learner took thetime to clean their own sleeping area andcollaborate with their peers in cleaning thewider campsite too.For more info about visionafrika contact
