S&OP INSIGHT EXECUTIVE BRIEF

Global business interdependence has driven the creation of complex demand/supply networks. These, in turn, are producing a new set of challenges for large manufacturers including insufcient collaboration and visibility into extended partner, customer and supplier relationships. Compounding these challenges is the need to manage an explosion of IT system data in step with the rapid pace of today’s global business. All of the above has resulted in an “agility gap” in organizations today—90% of organizations indicate that they consider planning agility to be crucial to business, but only 27% say they are good at it.

Often, the Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process is tasked to provide context from all of the collected data to both forecast future opportunity and analyze it for real-time decision making. Today, most companies have two technology options. The rst incorporates planning solutions to provide a forward-looking projection based on analysis of transactional data such as orders, backlogs, shipments, supply constraints. The second taps analytics to perform backward-looking deep-dive analysis, slicing and dicing on a variety of historic data points such as point of sale and customer website click streams.

Steelwedge has connected the two with a powerful, adaptable Planning Analytics engine that adopts the best of both worlds. The Planning Analytics engine within the Steelwedge Platform, in turn, powers Steelwedge S&OP Insight, a series of high-performance analytic dashboards.

Steelwedge leverages its single unied data model for global scenario management across supply, demand and nance. The solution provides extremely rich collaborative capabilities supported by Enterprise-Enabled Excel, online analytics and mobile delivery. With S&OP Insight businesses can assure:

Proactive Agility. With Insight, you will learn about what you don’t know and determine what to do about it. Through exception-based dashboards that analyze planning as well as transactional data, planners and analysts can get near real-time visibility into trends and make proactive decisions.

Planning Root-Cause Analysis. In business intelligence (BI), you analyze why things happened the way they did. Typical BI solutions look backward at data. With Insight, you let the system do scenario modeling about potential futures, and then Insight helps pinpoint the best possible tradeoffs within your specic business constraints.

Collaborative Insight. Embedded analytics provide access beyond the BI analyst. There is no articial separation between planners and the learning they need to drive better performance.

S&OP INSIGHT EXECUTIVE BRIEF

Technology Capabilities of the S&OP Insight Solution:

Harness Big Data: Tap operational data from across your systems that has been aggregated and normalized in the Steelwedge IBP Platform. Steelwedge Insight allows users to access and exploit that data to sift out the key relationships and inter-dependencies among supply, demand and nance to unearth details and insights previously below the surface in high volumes of data. A unique marrying of OLTP and OLAP technologies, along with a columnar indexing approach, enables this capability. Utilization of state-of-the-art hardware innovations in a cloud environment further facilitates this unique ability.

a)

Make sense of your Big Data: Aggregate and DisaggregatesHigh volume transaction processing includes stock tickers, commodity point of sales, planning and collaboration. Typically in S&OP, hundreds of users are making changes to the forecast and related supply and demand data in a collaborative planning process. Another set of business users wants to make sense of these changes and run business-level questions. Supply chain professionals want to ask metrics-related questions. Traditional technologies do not play well. OLTP handles transaction processing but is not capable of handling the queries. An OLAP-based approach is ideally suited for this. Traditional OLAP technologies are designed to be batch oriented and data-warehouse oriented, however. In other words, they are a huge investment in IT resources and bring a complexity inherent in serving a much bigger purpose than just S&OP or collaborative planning. Steelwedge has long recognized this issue, and has applied a new approach called Planning Analytics. The Steelwedge Planning Analytics Collaborator creates a real-time bridge between the collaborative system (OLTP) and the analytics system (OLAP).
