    In thermal power plants, the primary purpose ofa surfacecondenser is to condense theexhauststeam from a steam turbine to obtain maximum

    efficiency and also to convert the turbineexhaust steam into pure water (referred to assteam condensate) so that it may be reused inthe steam generator or boiler as boiler feed

    water.

    A direct-contact condenser intimately mixessteam and cooling water. In a barometric-typedirect-contact condenser, theequipment must beelevated highenough to drain by gravity. Alow-level barometric is drained bycondenser pumpsor other mechanical means.

    Direct-contact condensers offer lower first cost,lower cooling requirements, low maintenance,

    and can be used to scrub the fluid that is beingcondensed. However, they use a great volume ofwater, which must be discharged or treated.

    An indirect-contact surfacecondenser relies onmetal tubes or plates to prevent the mixing ofsteam and cooling media. In a vapor-in-shell

    (water-cooled) surfacecondenser, water flowsthrough tubes, condensing steam, which is inthe shell of thecondenser, outside the tubes.

    Surfacecondensers do not contaminatecooling

    water and allow for recovery ofcondensate.
