Secretary’s&Report&!!!8th!June,!2016!!!Dear!Member,!!!On!behalf!of!President!Beau!Coyle!and!the!Committee,!it!is!my!great!pleasure!to!table!the!2015/16!STC!South!Camberwell!Cricket!Club!Annual!Report.!!!This!report!includes!reports!from!our!five!senior!teams,!the!highly!successful!junior!program!and!extensive!player!statistics.!!!Special!thanks!must!go!to!everybody!that!made!a!contribution!to!the!preparation!of!this!report,!in!particular!John!Krohn!for!his!assistance!with!statistical!and!historical!information. !Finally,!I!would!like!to!thank!Beau!Coyle,!the!committee!and!the!STC!community!for!their!support!this!season.!!!Sincerely,!&Andrea!Craine!Secretary!

President’s&Report!!STC!has!once!again!had!a!very!successful!season!winning!two!premierships!in!the!2015/16!season.!We!once!again!tasted!success!in!the!ECA!Kookaburra!T20!Competition,!becoming!the!only!synthetic!club!to!win!the!cup!for!a!second!time.!Our!side!has!become!a!force!in!the!short!format!of!the!game!and!we!won!our!second!title!in!emphatic!fashion.!Our!ability!to!mentally!switch!to!the!short!format!has!become!a!trademark!for!our!team!as!we!continue!to!dominate!the!competition!since!its!inception.!!!We!welcomed!Barry!Mitchell!as!our!Junior!Development!Coach.!Barry!comes!with!a!wealth!of!coaching!experience!&!has!been!an!amazing!asset!to!our!club.!This!season!we!fielded!10!junior!sides,!which!takes!an!enormous!amount!of!organisation!and!coWordination,!from!training!to!game!day.!!Thank!you!to!Barry!and!all!the!coaches,!team!managers!and!supporters!who!have!taken!time!to!help!with!our!juniors.!It!is!necessary!to!see!our!parents!help!will!all!facets!of!our!junior!program!and!we!welcome!their!involvement!again!next!year.!STC!continues!to!produce!a!strong!junior!program!which!all!starts!with!Milo!In2!Cricket.!Thank!you!to!Stephen!‘Shippa’!Hoy,!Richard!Corbett,!Daniel!Sharpe!&!all!the!extra!hands!for!their!work!with!our!youngsters!this!year.!While!all!of!our!junior!teams!are!built!upon!the!foundations!of!having!fun!and!enjoying!the!game!of!cricket,!we!must!congratulate!the!Under!14!Blues!who!went!on!to!secure!their!grade’s!premiership,!being!defeated!only!once!during!a!dominant!season.!!This!season!also!saw!STC!field!its!first!ever!Veterans!team.!It!has!been!a!most!enjoyable!and!memorable!experience!to!get!this!side!up!and!running,!and!to!watch!the!“old!boys”!enjoy!their!cricket!once!again.!A!massive!thankWyou!goes!to!Paul!McMahen!who!captained!the!side!in!its!inaugural!season!and!has!been!the!backbone!of!the!team.!Congratulations!to!Paul!Urquhart!who!won!the!Player!of!the!Year!award.!We!look!forward!to!fielding!a!side!next!year!and!building!on!a!fantastic!first!season!!!Off!field,!we!have!enjoyed!one!of!the!most!successful!&!profitable!events!we’ve!seen!for!many!a!year.!Michael!O’Connell!has!done!a!fantastic!job!with!the!social!calendar.!Congratulations!to!Gary!Douglas!who!won!the!prestigious!Basil!Finnigan!award!&!to!Peter!Lynch!who!was!recently!inducted!as!a!Life!Member.!!I’d!like!to!take!this!opportunity!to!thank!all!of!the!committee!members!for!all!of!their!hard!work!this!season.!2015/16!has!seen!its!challenges;!thankfully!we!have!had!a!strong!and!dedicated!team!that!has!done!their!utmost!to!maintain!the!high!standards!for!which!STC!is!well!known.!A!special!mention!needs!to!be!awarded!to!the!executive!committee!consisting!of!Andrea!Craine!(Secretary),!Michael!O’Connell!(Senior!ViceWPresident)!James!Terrill!(Treasurer)!&!Bernard!Docherty!(Junior!ViceWPresident).!Andrea!has!put!in!an!enormous!amount!of!energy!and!time!into!STC!this!year.!She!is!extremely!committed!and!generous!of!her!time.!Michael!has!been!part!of!the!STC!committee!for!seven!years!and!now!steps!down!in!time!for!the!arrival!of!his!first!child.!I!sincerely!thank!Michael!for!his!contribution!to!STC.!Bernard!once!again!deserves!recognition!for!his!tireless!hard!work!with!our!junior!program.!!!!Next!season!looks!to!be!busier!than!the!rest!and!we!on!the!committee!see!a!lot!of!reason!for!optimism!for!next!season,!our!50th!Anniversary.!Nettleton!Park!facilities!will!undertake!an!upgrade,!with!plans!currently!being!finalised!by!council.!Works!are!set!to!start!around!November!2016,!continuing!for!4W5!months.!While!this!may!temporarily!cause!the!STC!community!a!little!inconvenience!we!believe!the!outcome!will!be!worth!it.!While!the!committee!continues!to!work!hard!behind!the!scenes!to!minimise!disruption!

Under&14&Premiers&!With!good!numbers!at!U14!level,!STC!were!able!to!field!a!team!in!each!of!the!A,!B!and!C!divisions.!!The!2015/16!U14B!squad!comprised!an!equal!mix!of!first!and!second!year!under!14s!and!a!spread!of!batting!and!bowling!talent!that!highlighted!the!clubs!depth!in!this!age!group.!!With!a!comprehensive!first!round!win!against!a!strong!opponent!it!was!apparent!that!this!team!had!the!capability!and!competitiveness!required!to!shape!the!top!4.!A!feature!of!the!team!was!the!ability!of!our!batsman!to!make!a!contribution!when!it!was!required,!regardless!of!whether!they!were!at!the!top!or!the!bottom!of!the!order,!exemplified!by!9!players!tallying!more!than!100!runs!for!the!season.!In!the!field!the!boys!were!well!lead!by!captain!Jack!Francis!who!caught!everything!that!came!his!way!and!rotated!his!pace,!seam!and!leg!spin!heavy!attack!to!perfection.!!!At!the!conclusion!of!the!home!and!away!rounds!STC!had!posted!6!wins,!a!loss!and!2!draws!and!sat!atop!the!ladder,!having!dropped!the!solitary!game!against!our!would!be!semiWfinal!opponent!in!Canterbury.!Without!doubt!the!most!dominant!performance!of!the!season!saw!STC!post!a!formidable!7W!276!off!45!overs!on!evening!1!of!the!semiWfinal!in!front!of!a!big!crowd!at!Nettleton!park,!backing!it!up!the!following!evening!with!a!measured!bowling!display!to!dismiss!our!opponents!for!142.!!!!!Having!turned!the!tables!on!Canterbury!with!a!thumping!win!at!Nettleton!Park!in!the!semiWfinal,!the!STC!U14B!Blues!earned!the!right!to!contest!the!grand!final!against!North!Balwyn.!With!preparations!for!the!game!disrupted!by!hot!weather!and!rain!earlier!in!the!week!the!team!took!the!opportunity!on!Friday!to!familiarise!themselves!with!the!conditions!at!Highfield!park.!!If!the!previous!week!at!Nettleton!was!back!foot!boundary!bliss!for!batsmen!then!the!comparatively!lush!outfield!and!slow!and!low!bouncing!pitch!at!Highfield!park!suggested!more!of!a!grind.!

With!the!45!overs!a!side!format!squeezed!into!a!single!day,!skills,!energy!and!attention!spans!would!be!tested!to!the!limit.!!With!the!coin!falling!obligingly,!captain!Jack!Francis!had!no!hesitation!in!deciding!to!bat.!!Ben!Tricarico!and!Harry!McLean!got!things!underway!for!the!Saints,!putting!on!49!for!the!first!wicket!after!15!overs!and!seeing!off!some!spirited!bowling!from!North!Balwyn.!With!the!platform!set,!Ben!McMahen!(28)!and!Phil!Gikas!(20)!started!to!lift!the!tempo!before!departing!with!the!score!on!4/135!with!10!overs!to!go.!With!the!game!delicately!balanced!Hugo!Goodman!(36)!delivered!an!innings!of!poise!and!power!to!allow!STC!to!push!on!to!a!very!competitive!8/185!off!45!overs.!!!!

Having!honoured!the!first!commandment!of!finals!batting,!“thou!shalt!bat!the!full!45”,!the!Saints!set!about!defending!the!target!with!a!well!balanced!attack!boasting!4!quicks,!4!seamers!and!4!leg!spinners.!!At!0/19!off!3,!the!North!Balwyn!bats!were!showing!intent!and!a!liking!for!the!cover!boundary.!!Goodman!broke!through!with!a!rare!LBW!in!the!5th!over!to!set!the!ball!rolling.!!In!the!next!over!Lucas!Harrison!bent!one!back!into!the!pads!for!another!LBW!and!followed!up!to!hit!the!stumps!again!in!the!10th!over.!!When!Hamish!Macmillan!sent!the!bails!flying!once!more!in!the!13th!over,!North!Balwyn!had!been!reduced!to!4/33!and!the!sea!of!red!on!the!Highfield!hill!was!starting!to!dream.!!!!

Disciplined!stump!to!stump!bowling!leading!in!to!the!final!drinks!break!resulted!in!the!required!run!rate!escalating!to!beyond!6!an!over.!!With!the!prospect!of!some!enterprising!batting!on!the!cards,!STC!returned!primed!for!the!decisive!session!of!the!year.!!Tom!Lowe!continued!the!assault!by!breaking!through!second!ball!after!the!break.!Tom!Swift!and!Liam!Foldi!were!introduced!to!the!attack!and!in!a!devastating!2!overs!claimed!a!couple!of!wickets!each.!!The!highlight!being!a!sharp!chance!accepted!at!slip!by!Ben!Tricarico!to!assist!Liam!Foldi!to!the!excellent!grand!final!figures!of!2/0!off!2.!!!!!

At!9/57!in!the!26th!over!it!was!only!a!matter!of!time!before!STC!got!their!hands!on!the!Dobeli!Shield!and!fittingly!it!was!Hugo!Goodman!who!took!the!winning!catch!off!the!bowling!of!John!Hynes!to!seal!the!premiership!for!STC.!!Having!finished!top!of!the!table!and!dropping!the!one!game!in!the!final!round!(the!loss!we!had!to!have?)!the!boys!responded!by!putting!together!a!dominant!display!of!finals!cricket.!!The!most!pleasing!aspect!being!timely!contributions!from!each!player!across!the!finals!campaign.!!There!were!plenty!of!highlights!on!the!day!to!keep!the!STC!spectators!enthralled!and!it!was!fantastic!to!see!the!STC!community!out!in!force!to!support!the!team.!!!!!For!many!of!the!boys!it!was!their!first!premiership!of!any!kind!and!no!doubt!one!they!will!remember!for!a!lifetime.!Whilst!the!team!was!able!to!achieve!the!ultimate!success!on!the!field,!the!season!was!also!notable!for!the!way!they!conducted!themselves!as!a!team!on!match!days!and!at!training.!!They!have!been!a!pleasure!to!coach.!!!!!Finally!I!would!also!like!to!acknowledge!the!contribution!of!the!Team!Manager!Michael!Hynes!and!the!parent!group!in!ensuring!that!the!boys!were!supported!and!that!there!was!never!a!shortage!of!players,!chefs,!umpires,!scorers!or!groundsmen!on!match!day.!!!!!!!Stephen&Harrison&Under&14B&Coach&&

First&XI&!It!might!be!strange!for!other!club’s!captains!to!begin!a!season!review!with!‘We!didn’t!win’,!but!not!for!us.!We!have!become!accustomed!to!playing!at!a!level!that!gives!us!a!chance!to!win!a!flag!every!year,!but!unfortunately!this!year!we!didn’t!have!a!great!one.!We!still!managed!to!finish!only!a!game!from!the!top!of!the!ladder!after!the!home!and!away!season,!make!finals!and!it!was!really!only!a!terrible!half!hour!in!the!semiWfinal!that!was!fatal.!!Our!team’s!standWout!performer!for!this!year!was!Steve!O’Connell,!who!made!in!excess!of!550!runs!including!three!centuries.!Sam!Fairbrother!also!had!a!very!good!year,!returning!to!somewhere!near!his!best.!The!achievements!of!both!players!were!recognised!by!the!ECA!last!night!as!they!were!named!in!the!MacGibbon!team!of!the!year.!!Luke!D’Astoli!took!27!wickets,!which!although!being!something!that!we’ve!become!accustomed!to,!is!still!an!exceptional!achievement.!!Russ!didn’t!have!the!year!that!he!would!have!liked,!having!to!overcome!consistently!inconsistent!form.!But!he!did!show!terrific!spirit!and!commitment!to!return!to!the!team!after!being!dropped!and!guide!us!to!the!finals!with!a!brilliant!century!in!our!clutch!match!in!the!last!round.!!Beau!added!a!new!dimension!to!his!accomplished!and!improving!bowling!W!that!is!if!the!ramp!shot!could!be!called!a!dimension.!The!swagger!he!showed!to!consistently!ramp!any!bowler!was!entertaining!to!us!and!confounding!to!the!opposition.!!Matt!Doran!played!every!game!in!the!ones.!Despite!not!being!a!senior!bowler,!he!always!seemed!to!be!given!a!tough!task!W!regularly!shouldering!the!inglorious!jobs!of!bowling!up!hills,!into!the!wind,!at!set!batsmen.!Yet!he!never!crumbled!to!the!‘hiding!to!nothing’!mindset.!He!was!always!able!to!form!a!plan,!commit!to!it!and!adapt!it!when!need!be,!which!is!one!of!those!skills!that!will!spawn!tangible!benefits!in!the!future.!!Paddy!Brandner!opened!the!batting!all!year!and!reliably!provided!a!strong!foundation!to!our!innings.!It!is!plain!to!see!that!his!first!halfWcentury!(and!century)!for!the!first!XI!are!just!around!the!corner.!Paddy’s!bowling!also!continued!to!improve!and!is!now!able!to!consistently!take!wickets!with!balls!that!land!on!the!pitch.!!Adam!D’Addazio!will!take!more!wickets!next!year!–!I’m!sure.!!Xavier!Wigg!made!the!most!impressive!debut!I’ve!seen!in!our!first!XI.!As!most!of!us!were!batting!like!the!now!popularised!‘Sallys’,!Xavier!smashed!the!ball!around!like!a!boss.!!We!had!4!players!debut!this!year!W!all!of!which!were!impressive.!Xavier!opened!the!batting!and!made!a!score!in!the!high!30s,!Dom!Hando!made!30!batting!at!3!against!the!sharpest!bowler!in!the!competition,!Sam!Dooley!made!48!in!his!first!real!innings,!and!Callum!Dooley!took!3!wickets!and!smacked!consecutive!6s!to!close!out!the!game.!It!was!terrific!and!reassuring!to!see!such!our!club’s!bright!future!start!so!confidently.!!The!same!game!Xavier!debuted,!we!had!what!we!thought!would!be!a!celebrity!appearance!from!Bernie!Docherty,!which!ended!up!occurring!a!few!more!times!throughout!the!year.!Bernie!patiently!played!his!role!despite!being!consistently!underW

bowled!W!he!finished!the!year!with!the!figures!12!overs!6/40.!It!was!also!a!nice!touch!to!have!Tom!Docherty!come!and!sub!for!us!one!of!the!games!W!sharing!the!field!with!his!dad!for!the!first!time.!!I’d!like!to!thank!Steve!O’Connell!for!wonderful!support!on!the!field,!but!especially!off!of!it.!!Likewise,!Sam!Fairbrother!for!a!load!of!organisational!help.!!I’d!also!like!to!thank!the!committee,!Beau!Coyle!and!Andrea!Craine,!in!particular!did!a!terrific!job.!!It!is!difficult!losing.!We!thought!that!it!might!be!a!dark!time!when!we!finally!failed!to!win!the.!But!we!have!an!enormous!body!of!talent,!experience!and!a!wellWlit!and!wellWworn!path!towards!winning!again.!Heading!into!our!50th!year,!we!look!stronger!than!ever!W!there!are!good!times!to!come,!the!golden!era!rolls!on.!!T20!report:!!The!opening!to!this!report!was!perhaps!a!bit!misleading,!because!we!did!actually!win!a!premiership!in!2015/16.!We!won!the!associationWwide!Kookaburra!T20!Cup,!arguably!much!harder!to!win!than!the!MacGibbon!Shield.!We!went!through!the!competition’s!6!games!undefeated,!as!a!team!must,!to!convincingly!beat!Edinburgh!in!the!final.!!In!the!finals!of!this!competition!we!uncovered!a!new!star!in!Callum!Dooley!W!I!get!the!feeling!by!suggesting!that!his!stardom!was!only!recently!uncovered,!he!might!heartily!tell!me!“JOG!ON!champ”.!Callum’s!performance!in!the!Final!was!particularly!impressive!taking!3!wickets!and!making!65!not!out!to!win!us!the!game.!Another!crucial!innings!that!day!was!played!by!Michael!O’Connell,!who!capitalised!on!his!opportunity!to!make!a!cutting!21!from!13!balls.!!This!season’s!results!improved!our!club’s!T20!record!to!36!wins!8!losses!W!something!we!hope!to!improve!upon!in!next!year’s!statewide!competition.!!!Tom&Bach&Club&Captain&

Second&XI&!The!2’s!season!was!played!in!two!halves!with!only!1!win!up!until!Christmas,!which!came!against!North!Balwyn!combined!in!the!first!game!of!the!year.!Whilst!there!wasn’t!much!to!talk!about!in!the!way!of!wins,!there!were!plenty!of!individual!performances!that!deserve!a!mention.!Solid!knocks!from!Matthew!‘Willo’!Williams!(84)!and!Sam!Dooley!(70)!in!his!first!game!were!noteworthy,!but!the!highlight!was!to!come!from!Matt!‘Shwatta’!Francis!when!he!took!5/50!after!a!promotion!from!the!3’s!with!no!form!but!the!captain!deciding!he!was!our!man.!He!didn’t!disappoint.! We!started!the!New!Year!where!we!started!the!season,!playing!North!Balwyn!Combined.!With!the!help!of!some!handy!additions,!the!likes!of!the!Dooley!brothers!and!Matty!‘Noodles’!Thomas!we!made!easy!work!of!them.!!We!learnt!that!Brad!has!a!pull!shot!with!some!brilliant!shots!to!make!a!well!made!60!with!Kingy!at!the!other!end!with!a!solid!57*.!Whist!the!win!was!great,!I!think!we!all!knew!that!it!meant!very!little!as!North!Balwyn!Combined!were!struggling!and!would!end!up!being!relegated.!What!we!didn’t!realise!was!we!wouldn’t!lose!another!game!for!the!remainder!of!the!season!and!give!ourselves!a!look!at!playing!finals.!Coming!to!the!last!2!games!we!simply!needed!to!win!and!somehow!grab!an!outright.!Our!best!chance!was!to!come!against!eventual!ladder!toppers!Edinburgh.!Batting!first!we!made!185!and!then!bowled!them!out!in!quick!time!for!104.!Unfortunately!it!wasn’t!to!be!and!we!also!fell!agonisingly!short!of!the!outright!in!the!final!round!when!we!made!5/280dec.!from!only!56!overs.!In!hindsight,!I!declared!a!little!too!early!that!day!and!it!almost!certainly!cost!Brad!Craine!a!glorious!ton.!I!clearly!owe!him.!Other!than!Brad’s!man!of!the!match!performance!(87*!from!58),!both!Michael!O’Connell!(84!from!96)!and!Tommy!Casha!(7/61!off!26!overs)!were!serviceable.!So!we!finished!4!points!out!of!the!four!which!was!a!super!effort!considering!the!start!we!had!to!the!season.!Great!signs!for!the!season!to!come!so!bring!on!season!16/17.!!!!Daniel&O’Connell&2XI&Captain

Third&XI&!Season!2015/16!was!a!lean!one!for!the!3XI!!We!could!only!manage!three!wins!for!our!allotted!13!rounds,!using!50!players!throughout!the!seasonW!only!five!playing!over!six!games.!!!Although!moving!up!a!grade!into!Wilson!Shield,!I!felt!that!the!3XI!was!never!out!of!it’s!depth.!Our!bowling!and!fielding!was!consistently!good!and!competitive!throughout!the!season!however!It!was!the!battling!that!was!our!Achilles’!heel,!posting!only!6!scores!above!150!and!3!below!90.!!Despite!this,!there!were!a!number!of!positives!from!the!season!to!be!celebrated!and!remembered.!!Round!4!brought!about!our!first!win!over!ToorakWPrahran!to!whom!we!lost!the!Grand!Final!to!the!previous!year.!This!came!about!courtesy!of!the!“Dale!George!Show”!(6/24!off!8!&!61no).!Along!with!his!mate!Matthew!Tesoriero!(46),!Dale!put!on!a!match!winning!performance!with!one!of!his!sixes!smashing!out!a!window!on!the!second!floor!of!the!CBC!school!block!!!!In!my!opinion,!our!round!7!win!over!archrivals!Glen!Iris!was!the!win!of!the!season.!A!scratchy!130!(J!Krohn!42,!B!Craine!21)!was!defended,!rolling!Glen!Iris!for!120.!Harry!Douglas’!4/16!was!his!best!bowling!performance!for!the!season!in!the!3XI!as!Tom!Sandilands!dazzled!the!opposition!with!his!tweakers!(3/19).!Some!great!fielding!all!round!was!capped!off!with!Raj’s!screaming!catch!in!gully.!It!was!a!special!day…Jack!was!even!hitting!sixes!!!Naveed!Bangash!ripped!through!the!ToorakWPrahran!batting!lineWup!in!Round!7,!taking!5/44!off!21!overs.!This!was!his!standout!year.!The!enthusiasm!and!athleticism!he!brings!to!every!game!he!played,!coupled!with!his!most!consistent!year!with!ball!saw!him!with!numerous!call!ups!to!the!2’s!over!the!rest!of!the!season.!!Multiple!contributions!from!Fabian!D’Addazio!(65)!Daniel!Sharpe!(62)!Peter!Lynch!(50)!and!‘Shippa’!Hoy!(42)!saw!us!finally!get!the!batting!sorted!out!with!318!versus!St!James!Malvern!in!round!8.!This!was!pleasing!to!say!the!least,!unfortunately!we!were!unable!to!defend!the!total!due!to!the!heat!out!and!shared!the!points.!!!

James!Briggs!showed!us!in!round!9!that!he!is!a!genuine!allWrounder!in!Wilson!Shield!with!31!runs!with!the!bat!and!3/55!off!8!overs!with!the!bowl.!I’m!looking!forward!to!seeing!his!developing!talent!take!him!into!the!higher!grades!in!the!future.!!Our!third!win!came!in!round!10!at!home!versus!Mt!Waverley!Uniting.!A!blistering!batting!display!was!put!on!at!Nettleton!by!Dale!George!(131!off!91)!and!Matt!Williams!(102!off!81).!It!was!a!joy!to!watch!as!the!ball!set!sail!to!all!parts!of!the!ground!and!over!the!creek…!!My!thanks!for!the!participation!and!patience!of!the!50!blokes!who!played!and!helped!out!this!season.!Game!day!was!a!personally!rewarding!&!educational!experience!for!me!as!a!first!year!captain.!This!thanks!also!extends!to!the!past!&!present!captains,!from!whom!I!

Fourth&XI&!Having!never!captained!a!cricket!side!before!I!entered!this!season!with!both!anticipation!and!the!determination!to!have!an!enjoyable!and!successful!season.!My!aim!was!to!ensure!that!everyone!has!fun!because!at!the!end!of!the!day!that!is!what!it!is!all!about.!Now!that!I!reflect!on!the!season!the!summer!of!2015/16!seemed!to!have!all!the!characteristics!of!a!Seinfeld!episode.!It!was!the!summer!of!George.!!My!first!game!as!captain!was!a!one!day!game!against!Deepdene!Uniting!and!we!restricted!them!to!122!off!40!overs.!Things!were!looking!extremely!promising!when!we!were!0/60!after!20!overs.!However!the!famous!cursed!STC!collapse!followed!and!we!lost!our!last!10!wickets!for!49!runs!!A!“bizarro”!moment.!This!close!loss!was!followed!by!two!strong!wins!in!one!day!games!at!Nettleton.!Two!wins!from!three!games!and!the!season!was!looking!promising.!Sadly!we!didn’t!win!another!game!for!the!season.!The!George!Constanza!blues.!!One!of!the!major!reasons!why!we!fell!away!so!badly!for!the!rest!of!the!season!was!due!to!the!troubles!we!had!all!season!filling!five!sides.!There!were!four!games!in!a!row!where!we!weren’t!able!to!fill!up!the!side!with!11!players.!Against!Edinburgh!in!round!6!the!4XI!only!had!8!players!in!the!field!in!the!first!week.!Cricket!is!an!extremely!tough!game!to!play!when!you!are!down!on!numbers.!Hence!why!we!struggled!to!be!competitive!at!many!stages!during!the!season.!Nevertheless,!the!boys!always!applied!themselves!and!never!gave!up.!My!thanks!to!the!many!blokes!during!the!season!who!were!able!to!help!us!out!when!we!were!under!stress!to!fill!teams.!The!STC!spirit!is!what!carried!us!through!in!many!games!when!we!were!under!adverse!pressure.!By!season!end!53!players!had!played!in!the!4XI!which!included!both!past!and!present!iconic!STC!characters,!doctors,!friends!and!family!members!who!didn’t!particularly!want!to!play!and!a!contestant!on!The!Chase.!!Come!season!end!the!4XI!finished!in!second!last!spot.!Looking!at!the!ladder!you!would!say!the!season!was!disappointing.!Conversely!I!have!differing!views!on!our!season.!There!were!positives!and!highlights!to!take!from!season!2015/16!for!the!4XI.!These!include:!• Luke!“Ross”!Flegeltaub!and!Alex!King’s!unbeaten!172!run!4!th!wicket!partnership!in!

round!2!against!Boroondara.!Ross!and!Kingy!finished!not!out!89!and!72!respectively!to!see!us!through!to!the!win.!

• Everyone’s!favourite!d!grade!celebrity!Matthew!“Schwatta”!Francis!making!a!cameo!in!the!fighting!4’s!and!taking!4/39!against!Boroondara!in!round!2.!

• In!round!7!Dion!Di!Battisa!made!exactly!100!runs!against!ToorakWPrahran!in!roughly!15!overs!!Dion!in!four!games!with!us!made!153!runs!at!38.3!and!took!9!wickets!at!18.2.!Dion’s!a!very!talented!cricketer!who!unquestionably!has!the!potential!to!play!higher!grades!at!STC.!

• Another!gifted!young!player!with!us!this!season!was!Jake!McKenzie.!Jake!won!the!batting!award!for!us!this!season!averaging!20.4,!including!a!very!fine!fifty!against!Trinity!Willison!in!round!12.!Added!to!this!was!Jake’s!wicket!keeping.!He!is!an!accomplished!keeper!who!should!be!playing!much!higher!grades!of!cricket!in!the!upcoming!seasons.!

• Matthew!Flinders’!resident!DJ!Andrew!McCarthy’s!urgency!in!the!field.!He!could!well!be!Australia’s!next!Eurovision!contestant.!

• As!mentioned!before!Jake!won!the!batting!award!with!102!runs!averaging!20.4!in!six!games.!I!won!the!bowling!award!with!11!wickets!averaging!41.5.!The!club!champion!was!won!by!me!as!well.!

Veterans&&The!Inaugural!ECA!Fletchers!Veterans!Competition!was!a!huge!success!this!season.!The!year!started!with!lots!of!hope!and!cobwebs,!but!the!main!objective!was!to!have!fun!and!finish!as!quickly!as!possible!to!enjoy!a!drink!or!two!after!the!game.!Quickly!we!found!it!was!a!bit!more!serious!than!we'd!expected!so!team!rules!were!established,!including!a!3am!curfew!on!the!night!before!games.!!!The!competition!was!a!7!round!season!&!at!the!halfway!mark!we!were!2!and!2!and!clearing!our!diaries!for!finals!in!Feb.!Unfortunately,!we!never!recovered!from!there,!losing!the!last!3!games!to!miss!finals,!but!we'll!be!better!for!the!run,!and!we'll!be!back!again!next!year.!!!!The!highlight!of!the!year!included!our!first!win!for!STC!in!Round!2.!We!were!able!to!defeat!a!full!strength!North!Balwyn!playing!with!only!8!playersW!effectively!7!after!I!arrived!having!fallen!down!my!stairs!on!Cox!Plate!day!and!contributed!nothing.!!Our!round!5!became!the!season!defining!game.!Played!at!Kew,!first!game!on!turf,!it!all!ended!in!controversy.!"Fencegate"!was!the!turning!point!of!the!game!when!Pat!Hall!was!dismissed!after!being!caught!by!a!fielder!who!was!touching!the!fenceW!went!from!cruising!and!sending!blokes!home!early,!to!collapsing!to!lose!by!30!runs!!!Thanks!to!Beau!and!Andrea!for!turning!up!to!watch!each!week.!Congratulations!to!Paul!Urquhart!who!won!the!STC!Veterans!Player!of!the!Year.!He!didn't!poll!until!round!5!of!7,!but!he!showed!his!class!on!turf!with!the!bat!&!he!came!through!to!win!with!8!votes.
