Welcome to University of the Arts and London!

This Camberwell guide for UAL students has been created by Camberwell BA Illustration students TiTi Lee and Liaw Guan-Wen to help you explore the area around Wilson Road and find interesting places to eat and relax on your lunch break, and also before and after class and at the weekends. There are many types of cuisine on offer in Camberwell so we encourage you to try them out.

How to use this guide

The guide is arranged by distance from the Wilson Road site so you can find places to eat and visit within a couple of minutes walk or a little bit further away, with details about the type of food available and the prices. You will also find information about places of interest that are a little further away, but still in the area of South London such as galleries, parks and food markets. We have included some information about food markets and shops near the three Halls of residence. We hope you enjoy using this guide and exploring the vibrant and interesting area that is Camberwell and South East London!

St. Giles ChurchSt. Giles is a Church of England Church on the corner of Wilson Road and Camberwell Church Street. One notable feature of St. Giles Church is its stained-glass windows, which were designed by local resident, art historian and critic John Ruskin. Besides its church services St. Giles Church also holds a series of music concerts. Each ticket costs just £3 for a 45 – 60 minute concert.

Lucas GardensLucas Gardens is a public park and gardens in the Camberwell area, within 5 mins walk from Wilson road and Peckham road. There is a small children’s playground and plenty of trees. In the summer time, you can have a great picnic here.

Fun Facts John RuskinJohn Ruskin (8 February 1819 – 20 January 1900) was a famous and important artist, essayist and critic. He lived in the Camberwell area during his teens. There is a road, park, primary school and college named after him.

Charlie ChaplinThe famous silent movie star is believed to have been born two miles from here on East Street, Walworth Road in 1889.Now famous for its busy street market, East Street is open all week except Mondays selling fruit, vegetables, plants homewares and much more.
