DANBURY, NORTH CAROLINA REGULAR SESSION MAY 20, 2013

The Stokes County Board of Education met in a regular session on Monday, May 20, 2013, at

6:00 p.m., at the Administrative Office in Danbury, North Carolina.

Board Members Present: Mr. Mike Rogers, Chairman; Ms. Becky Boles, Vice-Chairman; Mr.

Jamie Yontz, member; Mrs. Sonya Cox, member; and Mrs. Pat Messick, member.

Administration Present: Mr. Ronnie Mendenhall, Superintendent; Dr. Todd Martin, Assistant

Superintendent; Mrs. Ann Robertson, Administrative Assistant; Ms. Lanette Moore, Executive Director

of Finance; Mrs. Traci Royal, Director of Special Program; Ms. Ann Sliger, Director of Student

Information/Student Reassignment; Ms. Annette Johnson, County Athletic Director; Mrs. Sarah Wood,

Director of Media and Technology; Mr. Brad Lankford, Director of Transportation; Mr. Chad Beasley,

Director of High Schools; Mr. David Burge, Executive Director of Operations; Mr. Ricky Goins, Director

of Maintenance; and Mr. Michael Sands, Director of Testing.

Welcome and Pledge:

At 6:00 p.m., Chairman Rogers called the meeting to order.

Mrs. Messick invited those who wished to participate to join the board members in prayer and she

gave the invocation.

Chairman Rogers welcomed everyone and led everyone in the pledge.

Public Comments:

Emmanuel Hartman, a student from South Stokes High School, spoke against prayer at board

meetings, school sporting events, and high school graduations.

Approval of the Agenda:

Mrs. Cox made a motion to approve the agenda as presented. Motion was seconded by Mr. Yontz

and approved 5-0.

Good News:

Students from Ms. Zdan’s class at Piney Grove Middle School presented a PowerPoint

presentation on a strawberry garden project their class planted. Board members were treated to a serving

of homemade strawberry ice cream from the class garden.

Presentation:

Perry Peterson, from Peterson/Gordon Architects gave board members an update on the

Lawsonville Elementary School project. Mr. Peterson stated the drawings are about 90% complete. He

gave the following projected timeline:

Drawings ready for review by the State - June 10, 2013

Advertisement for bids - June 23, 2013

Pre-bid conference - June 27, 2013

Bids to be taken – July 17, 2013

Construction begins - August 17, 2013. It is hoped to have fencing up, when the students come

back to school in August.

Building occupancy - May or June 2014

Mr. Peterson also reported construction prices have been holding on for the items needed for the

school building. Mr. Peterson expressed everything was going well on the project.

Consent Agenda

Approval of Minutes:

Mrs. Cox made a motion to approve the regular session and budget work session minutes of

April 8, 2013; the special session minutes of April 19, 2013; the regular session minutes of April 22,

2013; and the budget work session minutes of April 29, 2013. Mrs. Messick seconded the motion and it

was approved 5-0.

Approval of Land Acquisition at Piney Grove Middle School:

Mr. Rogers stated this would be the opportunity to finish the original Piney Grove Middle School

land purchase of 1996 with the purchase of the remaining 1.35 acres for $4,000.00. Mrs. Cox made a

motion to approve the land purchase. Motion was seconded by Mrs. Messick and approved 5-0.

Approval of HVAC System Recommendation for Lawsonville Elementary Addition:

Mrs. Messick made a motion to approve heat pump systems for the classrooms and ductless mini-

split systems for the smaller spaces of the Lawsonville Elementary project. Motion was seconded by Ms.

Boles and approved 5-0.

Approval of YMCA Summer Camp:

Mr. Yontz made a motion to approve a YMCA summer youth volley ball camp at London

Elementary School. The camp is being held from 6:00-7:30 p.m., from July 15-August 18. Mrs. Messick

seconded the motion and it was approved 5-0.

Approval of JROTC Summer Camp:

Mr. Yontz made a motion to approve a JROTC Summer Camp June 1, 3, 4, and 5, 2013. The

camp will be held in Stokes County locations and will include one overnight stay. Mrs. Messick

seconded the motion and it was approved 5-0.

Mr. Yontz made a motion to approve the athletic summer camps, fund raiser, and field trips as

presented. The following items were approved:

Information and Announcements

The Board of Education scheduled a joint session with Stokes County Commissioners on

Monday, June 17, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., at the Ronald Wilson Reagan Memorial Building in Danbury; a

regular session on Monday, June 17, 2013, at 1:00 p.m., at the Administrative Office in Danbury; and a

regular session on Monday, July 15, 2013, at 6:00 p.m., at the Administrative Office in Danbury.

At 7:10 p.m., Mr. Yontz made a motion to enter closed session as allowed by NC General Statute

143-318.11(a)(1)(6). Mrs. Cox seconded the motion and it was approved 5-0. Following a break the

board entered closed session.
