    January 2014

Sixty-five entrepreneurial students from hairdressing, catering, construction trades and business courses attended a presentation by The Isle Of Wight Chamber Of Commerce as part of Start Your Own Business Week. Island High Sheriff Claire Locke (founder of Artigiano Ltd) spoke about why and how she started her own successful business which grew to £20m turnover. Kevin Smith, Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive talked about the opportunities available on the Island.

Michelin Chef, Robert Thompson from The George in Yarmouth said he started at the bottom aged thirteen doing seemingly menial tasks but it was all part of learning the business. Robert said with a Michelin star at the age of 23. I had to be determined and Tom Colwill from the Crossfit Valentis gym in Cowes recently opened his first business, and he thanked the Isle of Wight Lottery for their help as it would not have been possible without it. Finally Marcus Mason, from the British Chambers Of Commerce encouraged more people to consider starting their own business.

  • Needles Pleasure Park

Getting people ready for work The Needles Park has worked with Isle of Wight College, Jobcentre Plus (JCP), and Tourism South East (TSE) to play an integral part in a course which gives some of the Isle of

valuable new skills, gain significant interview experience and, most importantly, to secure meaningful long-term employment. Marino Zanti, General Manager at The Needles Park, is hugely impressed with the scheme as it gives his business a chance to help local people gain employment and shows Kerrie Honey from Jobcentre Plus has been involved with this programme from day one

vacancies is what we do every day and working in partnership enhances this service, giving the employer exactly what they need from a member of staff and helping our customers to get into work. The Isle of Wight College plays a vital role in helping young people to understand their own talents and to be the best they can be. With this in mind, working in partnership with JCP

and local employers was a natural progression. Speaking on behalf of the college, Hannah

This scheme is hugely beneficial for all parties and opens-up real opportunities for people to gain employment and skills. This is the third consecutive year that we have worked with the Needles Park and JCP on a successful sector-based work academy, which has benefited the local community and created employment opportunities. I would really like to see more local businesses taking the lead from The Needles Park as employers rarely get the opportunity to tailor a pre-employment package to ensure that potential employees have the training and skills required before

All seven people in the scheme have impressed The Needles Park with the skills acquired from their Welcome Host Gold course, so much so that they have all been offered jobs. The scheme has been so successful that many of the original candidates from year one are still employed by The Needles Park and continue to grow and develop their skills, which can only strengthen

    -term.
