EMV Credit Cards, Explained The next generation of credit cards is upon us, and it will make your transactions safer than ever before.

These new cards come equipped with EMV chips, which are designed to make fraud more difficult. Already the standard in much of the world, this technology is finally arriving in the United States.

The key date is Oct. 1. That’s when a liability shift will make the party in a transaction with the lesser technology — either the card issuer or the merchant — responsible for instances of fraud at the point of sale. This means it’s in the interests of financial institutions that offer credit cards, such as First Class American Credit Union, to issue EMV-chip cards. As many as 600 million of them will be in Americans’ hands by the end of the year, according to the Smart Card Alliance. And it’s in the interests of businesses that accept plastic to update to EMV-chip card readers.

That said; don’t expect to see the technology everywhere, at least at first. Some card issuers will wait until old cards expire to issue EMV-compatible cards, and some retailers have said they won’t have the EMV card readers by October. Some business owners surveyed recently were not even aware of the liability shift. The Smart Card Alliance expects about half of U.S. merchants to be EMV-equipped by the deadline.

What makes EMV chip cards more secure?

The magnetic stripe on the back of a traditional credit card contains fixed data that can be used to produce a phony credit card and make fraudulent purchases.

With EMV — which stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa, the companies that created the technology — a chip embedded in the card creates unique data for each individual purchase. Customers are also asked to verify EMV-card purchases with a signature or personal identification number (PIN).

In a way, gaining access to data from an EMV-chip card purchase might not be any more useful than finding an old receipt.

Still, an analysis on credit card fraud suggests that EMV chips will not be a cure-all. Hackers can still steal your information when the card isn’t present — for example, when you make online purchases or give out card details verbally. But if you’re vigilant in guarding your card information, the move to EMV technology will mean safer transactions.
