A message from the Sale Manager…Welcome to the 2009 Star Studded Event! This auction will certainly be theshowcase of the Red Angus breed for 2009 and offers some of the greatestDonor Matrons in the industry today. In 2006, Paul Johnson began investing insome of the top Red Angus females and combined them with elite bulls in aneffort to make a “super herd”. Unfortunately, the economy has taken away fromhis other business ventures, forcing the sale of the entire Johnson / Star G cowherd, ET heifers and embryos. The bull calves that will be sent to the OBI BullTest in Stillwater, Oklahoma and marketed in the November 2009 and March 13,2010 Red Alliance Auctions.

I have again invited Rocking R Ranch and Mathes Farms to join us for thisauction. Batterson Red Angus and Navillus Red Angus will be new to the StarStudded Event in 2009 and have some terrific females to offer. The StarStudded Event is unique in that there will be a variety of cattle offered –registered Donor Cows, cow/calf pairs, spring bred heifers, fallbred cows, bulls and 150 commercial fall bred heifers – so thereshould be cattle in every price range and caliber for any cattle producer in thecountry! If you can’t find the Red Angus genetics you are looking for in thiscatalog, I’d wager they can’t be found.

I would like to invite you to the Plowman Farms just south of Douds, Iowa onFriday June 19th for a showing of the ET heifer calves that will be in the auction.Friday night we will have an informal get-together at the South Fork in Bloomfieldand Saturday the cattle will be on display by 8 a.m. If you cannot attend andwould like to buy cattle, please call me or any of the sale representatives on thenext page.

We look forward to seeing you June 19th and 20th!

Best Regards,KKyyllee GGiillcchhrriisstt

I am constantly looking for the next super bull in the breed and thinkBadlands Net Worth may be him. From his super powerful and eyeappealing sire to his consistently “producing-at-the-top” dam, Net Worth hasthe look and the lineage to be more than just another Red Angus herd bull. Ibelieve many operations have gone too far in moderating their genetics andin Iowa, we sell calves by the pound and I want some growth in our cattle. Ibelieve Badlands Net Worth is the bull to maximize growth and muscle.Herd Bull DNA Case #PR0253034.

I was planning to use this bull as a clean-up for many of our sale females butwas unable until the Osteopetrosis results come back from the lab makingsure he is free (results will be back by sale time but not breeding time). ByJune 20th it may be too late for many producers to still be looking for a bullso plan on a real bargain for this rascal. He is large testicled, smooth madewith lots of depth, high maternal traits and very strong carcass numbers. Iwould expect his calves to be nothing short of fantastic and he should workon heifers. In last year’s Star StuddedEvent, a flush sold for $6,600 to 3K Land & Cattle of Texas and due to thehot summer following our sale, only got the one flush in on her. If you like power, growth, milk and performance, Selma 9047 certainly has it.With all of the bull studs constantly selecting calving ease bulls, there is asmorgasboard of studs to breed her to and enhance their performance andstature. The Red Angus breed has so much more to offer the beef industrythan just calving ease. Females like lot 7AA most certainly can bringperformance that will match Continental cattle for growth. The last time I wasat the sale barn, they paid the sellers on the weight of their calves and I don’texpect that to change in the near future. Lots 8A - 8D are a very special set of ET heifer calves. Their dam – Jacobson Hannah R5025 – is the only private treaty animal that Johnson / Star Gpurchased (all others were at auction) and proved to be a phenomenal cow with a lot of fertility and egg producing abilities (averaging 10 embryos per flush).Hannah 5025 sold to Little Creek Farm of Mississippi in the 2008 Star Studded Event and is a Donor Matron in Dr. Mikell Davis’ program. We showcasedthe maternal sisters to these heifers, sired by Javelin at the 2009 Iowa Beef Expo where Lot 18 sold for $2,500 to Uriell Red Angus, Lakota, ND and Lot 19sold to Dennis Jacobs, Purdin, MO, for $ 2,750. We then took the third Javelin heifer to the Illinois Power of the Reds Auction where she sold as Lot 6 for

$2,600 to Paul Rooksberry, Green Castle, Indiana. If these Get R Done heifers have a fraction of the fertility and production abilities of their dam, they will bea good, sound investment. Make plans now to be in Douds, Iowa on Friday June 19th for the showing of the ET heifer calves at the Plowman Embryo

Center (see inside front cover) . These heifers will not be weaned yet and will sell with pick-up or delivery in early August. Lots 8A-8D will sell choice with the buyer having the privelege to take 1, 2, 3 or all 4 heifers at the bid price!

Selling open ready to flush. From an ET flushmate sister of the $50,000Forster Cprtop 591 cow purchased by Atkinson Red Angus & Chicken CreekRanch of Tennessee. We have sold Rambo 502 semen for up to $1,100 perstraw at auction so why not come and invest in a powerful daughter from oneof the greatest cow families the Red Angus breed has ever seen ? WhenPaul Johnson made the decision to disperse the Johnson / Star G cows, wewere just getting ready to flush Snowflake for the first time -- she was leftopen and should be ready to flush a pile of embryos before you need tobreed her back ! This cow came out of the2006 History In The Making Sale in Kerrville, Texas and was one of the topsellers in that auction. I saw this heifer at Jacobson Red Angus when doingselections for the Minnesota Great Northern Auction and tried to get her intoseveral auctions before Kerrville. She is a big, stout cow and produced anoutstanding bull September ‘08 bull calf by Equals Thunder that weaned at790 lbs and ratioed 111. We only got to flush her once so we don’t really havemuch of a flushing track record on this cow but she certainly deserves to bein a Donor Program. Donor Cow DNA Case #PR0206904.

Barlee 656 was the high selling heifer calf in the 2006 NILE from Ron & EstherFischer – Harlowton, Montana. She is a hard working, heavy milking cow that hasdone a nice job for us. Her Mojo heifer calf should “turn it on” this summer and willbe an asset to whatever program they go into. Remember the grass is green, thecalves are big with only a few short months to “pay day” – not very manyopportunities to buy pairs during the prime of the grass season so don’t be holdingback – bring your checkbook and come to buy!

Well last year, I said we were going to downscale to a more manageable sizeand this year we are sitting on 100 head instead of 150 so I am gettingcloser. With Paul Johnson’s decision to disperse the Johnson / Star G herd, our emphasis will continue to be on Red Angus sale management andauctioneering. Please understand that Star G Ranch, Inc. is not dispersingour herd and Amy and I will continue to produce ET calves from ten elitedonors to sell bulls in the Red Alliance Auction in Oklahoma as well as somevery high quality females through the Iowa Beef Expo and Illinois Power ofthe Reds Auctions in the future. Clayton, Kaya and Chade will also continueto have RAAA Junior memberships and cattle of their own to build their futureshow cattle from.

I run into a lot of Red Angus breeders across the country and appreciate thedifferent programs that exist in this great breed. While environment plays abig role in the kind of cattle that different parts of the country produce, Iwould like to tell you what kind of cattle the Star G Ranch is striving for. I do not think in southern Iowa that I need many 5 frame cattle. Ourcustomers calves still sell by the pound and I am trying to produce a 6 - 6.5 frame bull and think anything smaller is simply not maximizingour resources. I want cows that are heavy milkers and fertile. I have heard producers say that they don’t want their cows to milk too muchbecause they take too much feed – not here – if they don’t milk, they don’t stay in our program. We are very stringent on keeping our herdclean from genetic defects and have tested many animals to be sure that we are OS free and are very critical about animals that we bringinto the herd.

We are very excited to have you come to Bloomfield, Iowa June 20th and inspect our program. We will be selling all but nine of ourregistered Red Angus cows and will be looking for an animal to purchase in our fall and winter auction season to make our 10th DonorCow. We will also be selling all of our commercial cows and our Simmental herd bull MR FR S32 “Bruce”. With over 40 auctions on ourupcoming management and auctioneer schedule and three kids ages 3, 4 and 5, our stress level is at its peak and 10 Donors plus all of theET calves that they can generate will keep us busy enough for the next couple of years.

We haven’t had a chance to get a new family photo so please come to Bloomfield and get re-acquainted with our family. Clayton was akindergartner (had a perfect attendance record –yeah mom!) this year and will celebrate his 6th Birthday on July 1. Kaya is a proud 4 yearold and loves to be outdoors climbing trees and picking flowers (we hope she doesn’t become a PETA activist) and Chade is 3 and our “wildman” and loves to chore, feed cows, chase cows and ride the Kawasaki Mule. Time certainly flies with so many activities and we would liketo take this time to thank our many auction and cattle customers for a fantastic year.

Best Regards,

Amy & Kyle Gilchrist

This bred heifer sold in last year’s Star Studded Event for $2,500 and wasnot paid for so I traveled 1416 miles to reposses her and bring her home. Inlast year’s catalog, I wrote “after seeing the Milky Way heifers at the Whitleysin Alabama and at the 1996 SERAA Grasstime Auction, I knew I wanted touse the bull . . . . well 12 years later, I still think they may be as functional andproductive as many of the Red Angus cattle in the breed. Time tested EPDnumbers are essential and you can bet that these figures should certainlyhold up !” . In 2009, my philosophy hasn’t changed. I still think time testedcattle with progeny proof ismore important than a hot“newcomer”. She has earning power, and should, coming from theFancy Lady cow family from Rocky Hill Farm of Tennessee. Her sire – GoldRobber 1909E – is one of the longest spined, super statured bulls of thebreed with top 1% Milk and Heifer Pregnancy and top 4% TM – not bad traitsto breed for in a cow herd! Her Mojo calf this fall should be nothing short ofawesome.

Both heifers are P.E. 5/13/09 - 06/19/09 to Gilchrist Pine Ridge U845 (Lot13A). I purchased these heifers as embryos from Greg Hudspeth via hisannual Gathering Sale a couple of years ago. The Maid Marian cow was thehigh seller to Little Creek Farm of Mississippi and generated a lot of buzzwhen that catalog came out. If they have an udder like their incredible dam, they will make excellent, moderate sized cows that should raise whoppingcalves! Bred to the exciting heifer bull selling as Lot 13A, I would be veryinterested in seeing their calves in the fall of 2010.

Coley’s Mojito 503R • Sire of Lot 50

Jacobson Extremist 7010 Sire of Lot 47 bull calf

Welcome to the 2nd Annual Star Studded Event! It is great to be working with Kyle and Amy, again to assemblesome of the most elite Red Angus Genetics in the Midwest. Thisyear’s offering may even top last years, if you can believe that! This year we are offering the cream of the crop from our bred heiferpen. Our lead off lot—is a natural calf out of our donor matron CCFEleanor (BE) 0263 (a direct Eleanor daughter) by Southern King1765K! We’ve also thrown in a matching set of embryos to thismating!

We are also very excited to announce that the FIRST DR Hosscalves to ever sell – will sell here at the Star Studded Event June20, 2009!!

Gilchrist DR Hoss was the $17,500 (½ interest) high selling bull at the 2008 Red Alliance Auction in Stillwater, OK. He is inthe top 1% of the breed for WW, YW, TM and top 4% for Milk!! To have this much power and performance and stillmaintain a low birth weight is unmatched by any other bull in the breed. Out of 17 calves he averaged a 78.25 lb birthweight. His sire UBAR High Capacity 224 is one of the most popular and proven sires in the Red Angus breed and hisdam PAR Selma MA 373 is with out a doubt – one of the best cows in the breed! She currently touts an unbelievable 118YW and 62 TM EPD which is absolutely unheard of, so you can understand why we were thrilled to put DR Hoss to workin our program! There has been a lot of “Buzz” about his calves and speculators have questioned whether or not these calves would liveup to the hype….And I will tell you right now THEY HAVE! They are flat good! We are only selling choice of the first heifercalves at this sale and the rest will be held back for the Red Alliance bull test and next years Star Studded Event! Breeding data and Osteopetrosis test results will be available sale day and also posted on our website atwww.redgenetics.com

So we invite you to make the trip to Bloomfield, IA June 20th and join us for some great food, fun and of course cattle! Again, thank you for your interest and continued support of our program and if we can help you in anyway, please let usknow!

Here is a stout made DR Hoss daughter out of a King Rob cow. Her dam 1JRomeo Rob Randi has a 108.8 MPPA -- not to mention she stands in the top1% for TM and within the top 5% for WW, YW, and Milk! The apple certainlydidn’t fall far from the tree because 916W also stands tall with a WW 49 YW89 and TM of 50!! Welcome to the Star Studded Event. The Red Angus breed has been part of ourprogram and family for over 34 years with grandparents Gerold & Peggy Eakinsand Eakins Hawkeye Farms. Beginning in 1972 they successfully exhibited andpromoted the breed along with Rex & JoAnn James across the country during theearly years when the breed was not recognized for the strengths that we enjoytoday. Today, Batterson Red Angus - Jason, Dana, Carter & Collin, along with thecontinued support of family look forward to offering cattle in a production salesetting for the second time since 1981. Embryo transfer has played an integral partof our program over the past decade and allowed us the opportunity to offer theinfluences of many of our donor females. Our emphasis has been on quality andintroducing elite individual in herd sires and donor females. Our program demandscattle that are sound, breed early, calve easy, milk adequately, and are pleasing intheir make up. It will be our pleasure to welcome you on June 20th. See you inBloomfield, Iowa.

Gelding STARBUCKStarbuck is a 5 year old grade gelding. I broke him as a 3 year old and hardlyrode him as a 4 year old due to the fact that I had so many outside horses Iwas breaking/training last year. After a year of not being ridden, I threw asaddle on him and went out to check cows. He has a good disposition andwants to please you. I have crossed water and small ditches on him withouthesitation. He is easy to catch - if you can catch a cold you can catch thishorse! I have primarily used him to check cows off of this year during calvingseason. Starbuck should make a very usable horse for you if you arechecking cows, trail riding, 4H project etc. He is a good young horse with anoutstanding disposition.Consigned by: Stuart Gilbert / Graystone Cattle Co.
