Connecting Churches to Change Our World
Creating New Units by Tracy Jaggers, D.Min.
LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.
“Creating New Units” - This phrase was created back in the 70’s or 80’s to soften the blow of “splitting” or “dividing” a class to create a new Bible study class. Since then we have developed other terms to say the same thing with the desired intention of avoiding conflict. But, is the principle still valuable and necessary? First, I believe creating new units or starting new classes is necessary. Statistics reveal that
once a classroom reaches 70-80% of its capacity, the class will cease to grow. Most people are uncomfortable with someone, other than family, in their “private” space. It could also be that the teacher has lost their passion for the task, because the class is no longer growing. It could also be that the class dynamics are stifling new members from being welcomed into the group. Second, demographics declare new classes are still needed. We are not even scratching the surface of the numeric expansion in our area, so we must create space for new seekers. We MUST give place to, and care for, those yet-to-come. But, what if we merge two smaller classes? Is that okay? Well, let’s think through the logic of that option - Two groups of people, who have been used to being their own separate family group, thrown into a room with people they do not know….? Sounds a little bit like my first dance experience in elementary school - all the boys on one side of the room and all the girls on the other side. How did that work out? It didn’t! Merging classes is fraught with barriers and often stifles growth. Creating new “units” or “classes,” is still a great way to create growth and openness. A) They encourage new relationships. B) They contain a more adventurous spirit. C) They have not been together long enough to create cliques. D) They tend to appeal to newcomers (i.e. fewer barriers to overcome). E) New attendees normally have a wider circle of influence with other unchurched persons. F) The atmosphere is less stale and entrenched. G) New friendships are likely to fellowship and give care to one another. H) They are usually externally-focused on the community rather than internally-focused on the organization. So, try starting some new classes with a willing core group, or with a leader who has a heart for the community and the lost. The unchurched populace is eagerly awaiting a personal invitation to your church.* Why not create a class that is designed for those who have yet to be connected with any church? It may not be easy, but neither is the pain of watching your small group ministry dwindle away. Bathe the start in prayer, then take a risk and give it a try! *Personal invitations still work - http://www.evangelismcoach.org/2012/personal-invitations-to-church-are-most-effective/ http://evangelismga.com/how-to-invite-people-to-church-and-why-you-really-should/

PASTOR AND STAFF LEADERSHIP TRAINING EVENT
September 12, 2015
Hosted by Crossroads Baptist Church
of The Woodlands
We serve a God who is unchanging. In James 1:17 it is recorded, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” A.W. Pink said, “God cannot change for the better, for He is already perfect; and being perfect, He cannot change for the worse.” The security we have in Christ is solidified by the unchanging nature and perfection of our Heavenly Father. While God is unchanging we live at a time of great change. Change is a reality for all of us. Some we like, some we don’t but embracing change and learning how to respond in a positive manner is critical for effectiveness. When I think about change I think about basketball. In 1891 James Naismith was a Physical Education teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts looking for a way to keep athletes in shape during the cold winters. He tried having them play Lacrosse but the injury levels sustained caused him to reconsider it. So he went up a ladder and nailed a peach basket on the wall ten feet off the ground. The players used a ball that looked like a present day soccer ball and the game was largely low scoring. Every time the ball went into the basket a janitor would be called to bring out a ladder and recover the ball so the game could resume. Finally it was determined that if they would put a small hole in the bottom of the basket they could take a wooden pole and jar the ball out. In 1906 they moved from peach baskets to metal chain nets – but they still used the wooden pole to get the ball out of the net – it was just easier to see. It would take 10 more years before they realized that if they would cut a hole in the bottom of the metal net that the ball would simply drop out on its own. It took 25 years to go from a peach basket to a net that allowed the ball to drop through on its own – this solution may seem so obvious but when your used to seeing things a particular way you tend to keep on seeing them that same way. Basketball has changed a lot since its original inception but each change has helped to move the game forward to being a more enjoyable sport to play and to watch. But I wonder about some of the possible conversations that probably took place as the changes were being made. I can imagine a group of players across generations talking about playing the game and someone from the early days saying, “I remember the good ole days when we had Smitty come out and retrieve the ball off the ladder – that’s when the game was at its best.” “ No”, someone else would say, “It was when we learned to use the wooden pole and would jar the bar out of the peach basket that the game was really fun to play.” Another player would call out, “When we changed to that metal net it was amazing, you could see the ball to jar it out and you know how much fun it was to use that wooden pole.” In our churches, families, ministries and everywhere we look change is upon us. How we respond to those changes shapes whether we manage change or are overwhelmed by it. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be caught up a ladder or trying to jar a ball loose with a stick when all I need to do is to cut a hole into the bottom of the net. Many times it seems easier to not make a needed change but the limits that come from not pushing on to a better future can result in a loss of opportunity and impact in our efforts. Whether it is in our church families, ministries, or personal lives we all must choose how we will value change. C.S. Lewis said, “It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.”
Are there things you’re dealing with that need to change but your stuck on the ladder?
