LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.

What will you be reading next year? As we begin 2017, I trust you will invest in your own personal growth by intentionally reading books that will challenge and stretch you. The formation of a reading list that is varied will expand your interests and expose you to new thoughts and ways of understanding. Let me share with you the books that are part of my reading list for the first quarter of 2017. Some of them I have read before and need to go back to again but most of these will be the first read for me – hopefully this will give you a start on forming your own reading list.

The 12 Week Year by Brian Moran. Our staff is reading this book as we enter the coming year. It is a helpful model of how our thinking impacts our effectiveness and productivity. This is a book based on a simple concept of intentionally living with a high productivity focus.

The Allure of Gentleness by Dallas Willard. Willard shares that what is often missing in our apologetic approach to sharing our faith is the living out of the reflective life of Jesus in its love, simplicity, humility and gentleness. When people see that transforming reality within us they will want Jesus.

Dignity and Destiny by John Kilner. Exploring what it means to be created in the image of God, Kilner seeks to provide a construct that will allow the reader to explore the implications being God’s image (Christ) and being created in God’s image (humanity).

Onward by Russell Moore. Challenging Christians to reclaim the implications and impact of the Gospel in a culture increasingly void of its influence.

Christian, Muslim, Friend – 12 Paths to Real Relationship by David Shenk. This book is a primer for understanding how we can honestly engage those with Muslim faith in a meaningful way that can enable life-changing friendships and create a bridge that can be eternally impacting.

The Pastor Theologian by Gerald Hiestand and Todd Wilson. Challenges pastors to understand the implications of theology and pastoral ministry while providing three models of theological study and practical ministry – the Local theologian, the Popular theologian, and the Ecclesial theologian.

Prayer – Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God by Timothy Keller. Exploring prayer as powerfully intimate and more than you thought before.

Next Door As It Is in Heaven by Lance Ford & Brad Brisco. Living out God’s Kingdom in your own neighborhood – exploring what can happen when compassion and care become the core of what it means for us to neighbor. (by the way – we have Brad coming in Feburary!)

The Imperfect Pastor by Zack Eswine. “Discovering joy in our limitations through a daily apprenticeship with Jesus.”

The Missional Quest by Lance Ford & Brad Brisco. How to live out each day the challenge of God’s Kingdom in you and your church.

Searching for Sunday by Rachel Held Evans. One woman’s journey of rediscovering her faith and God’s faithfulness to her.

From Dependence to Dignity by Brian Fikkert and Russell Mask. A challenging book on using Church-Centered microfinancing to respond to poverty an empower people through the grace gift of work.

Multipliers – How the Best leaders Make Everyone Smarter by Liz Wiseman. Other than the book of Proverbs, this has been one of the most impacting books in shaping my understanding of how to lead teams and people to expand their capacity.

Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman. The seminal work on the skillsets that will help you be more effective with others.

So what will you be reading in 2017? If you have a book you would recommend I would love to hear about it and why it matters to you. A confession, some books I listen to, some I e-read, but most – I like to hold in my hands. Some books may start in other formats but if they

impact me they end up on a shelf in my office or home. Books are like friends to me and I like to keep them close by.

Welcome to 2017! As we enter a new year every year, I confess to being curiously optimistic about the future. Considering just how chaotic 2016 was on a global scale, I for one am looking forward to a re-set. One thing, however, that I will fondly remember 2016 for was it being the year that my family and I became part of the TEBA team. Having had the opportunity to watch this crew in operation, I am honored to join their ranks.

Beginning in July, I embarked upon a consulting project researching and assessing the current state of missions within the Tryon Evergreen realm, with a view toward determining the success and failure rates of church plants / missions that have been established from 2004 until the present day. Part of the impetus behind this study was to determine the effectiveness of the current church planting strategy being utilized at TEBA - and as such, this was considered an outside project (with very little input from Dr. Yancey) to ensure objectivity. At the time that the report was submitted in October, a grouping of 40 current and previous missions were analyzed individually and were placed in the following categories with their corresponding results:

Of the 40 current and previous missions surveyed within the TEBA:

16 have now CONSTITUTED (they are now autonomous, independent churches with constitutions and by-laws) and represent 40% of the total missions surveyed.

4 are presently ACTIVE and presently receiving financial support from TEBA (too young to have constituted yet). They represent 10% of the total.

8 are presently ACTIVE and no longer receiving financial support from TEBA (for varying reasons they have not yet pursued formal constitution yet). This represents 20% of the total.

2 have now TRANSITIONED from missions back into local ministries. This represents 5% of the total. 6 have now DISSOLVED and are no more. This represents 15% of the total. 4 are presently under SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES for various reasons (but are fully expected to pursue constitution in the future).

This represents 10% of the total.

Considering that only 6 of the above churches have dissolved, this represents an 85% success rate among church plants / missions that have either constituted, are in process, or have re-established as existing church ministries within the Tryon Evergreen region! In a day when bad news amongst Southern Baptists seems to garner the headlines more often than not, this is a reason to rejoice. The present church planting model that TEBA have employed seems to have been designed with a long-term view in mind and has demonstrated strength for churches / missions within the Association.

The visible trends amongst these churches revealed little surprises; strong leadership & vision coupled with an emphasis on discipleship and outreach have resulted in healthier missions / church plants that should continue to strengthen going forward. Conversely, those missions without strong leadership / vision have tended to stagnate. TEBA stands ready to assist these missions in their endeavors.

As we look to the future, a recent statistic revealed by Dr. Yancey states that 2200+ people will move into the TEBA region per month from now until 2021. That works out to 70 people per day - many of whom do not know Christ. Couple this with Houston now being named as the most diverse city in the U.S. (over 300 languages spoken), and the need for more church plants becomes even more profound. May we who have been granted this wonderful gift of Truth and Light recognize this wonderful opportunity and strategically consider what role we play in this next wave of Kingdom expansion. May God give you His wisdom. Grace & Peace, Darrell Ingram
