DIOCESE OF SPRINGFIELD LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat as well as days of fast, when only one full meal is allowed. On days of fast two other meatless meals may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. 2. The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.

3. The obligation to abstain from meat begins at fourteen (14) years of age. 4. The obligation to fast begins at eighteen (18) years of age and ends at fifty-nine (59) years of age. 5. Although the faithful may excuse themselves for a just cause from these laws of fast and abstinence, there is an obligation to substitute another penance and no Catholic should lightly excuse himself/herself from this obligation in the Lenten season.

Sacrament of the Sick will be administered after the Saturday 4:30p.m. Mass

ORGANIST/CANTOR WANTED AT HOLY NAME

Our Parish is seeking an organist/cantor or organist for our 4:30 PM Saturday Liturgy and to help as

substitute for other liturgies. Pay is commensurate with ability. Please pass along to anyone you know

who may have interest. Contact Tom Veto, 413 250-7812 or Fr. David Aufiero, 733-5823. Thank You!

We encourage you to clip and save for future worship.

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace…where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. - St. Francis of Assisi

BEST LENT EVER

It is a free email program that will guide you on an incredible journey toward the best-

version- of- yourself. From Ash Wednesday to Easter, you'll discover ways to transform

your life in Forty Days. https://dynamiccatholic.com/best-lent-ever

40 Days for Life

The Spiritual Life Committee is sponsoring an hour of prayer from 1p.m. to 2p.m. on Wednesday, April 3rd. Please join the pastor and the committee as they pray for the safety of the Preborn. This is in conjunction with the

national program 40 Days for Life (Ash Wednesday through Palm Sunday). The group will meet on Wason

Avenue (off North Main Street) in Springfield. If you have any questions, feel free to call Sandy Hines at 733-1096.

SCHOLA NOVA - Saturday, April 6th, 6:00p.m. The foundation of Schola is the pure “Love of Music” and the joy it can bring to the community. They are always so very pleased to be appearing at Holy Name Church. As always, there will be a Wine & Cheese Reception at the Social Center following the performance. The $2.00 donation enables us to have an accurate head count for the refreshments. Hope you can join us! Tickets on sale again for this final weekend .

Are you familiar with the Holy Name Prayer Line?

It is a group of 30+ parishioners (called the Prayer Line Partners) who pray for anyone who is in need of prayers for any reason. It could be an illness, loss of a loved one, etc., or a special intention. We invite you to

share your prayer needs by calling Ann at the rectory (733-5823). You don’t even have to give us your name –

just who (first name only, or you can say a woman, a man, a parishioner) the group would pray for and a very brief reason (i.e., surgery, illness, special intention, etc.) for the request. We compile a daily list (Monday

through Friday) and email it to the partners who have emails, and it is called in to those who do this by phone (first person calls the second, and so on). New partners always welcome. Please contact Ann at the rectory, 733-5823,

with your interest.

STEWARDSHIP

Collections for March 16 & 17, 2019 total $6,738.48! We sincerely thank you for your kind contributions!

The OPEN PANTRY is very much in need of the following food items (their shelves are more empty than they should be at this time) -

Oatmeal or Hot (Healthy) Cereal, Peanut Butter, Canned meats and Spaghetti Sauce (in plastic jars or cans, if possible)

But please, we ask that you do not bring any:

Perishables of any kind (bread, potatoes, fresh vegetables, etc.) Pick-ups are not done every week, so any

items like this will go bad.

Partially used/opened items

Also, please check expiration dates. We cannot give them items that have expired.

Thank you very much for whatever you are able to donate!

Annual Catholic Appeal Donations from Holy Name Parishioners Many thanks to all who are participating in this appeal. Thus far, $24,745.00 has been raised by 124 donors (individuals and families) from our parish.

SERVICE

Concerning Hospital Visits If someone in your family is in the hospital and you want to have Fr. David, Fr. Joyce or Sister Melinda visit, please call the rectory at 733-5823 and leave a message for either father or Sr. Melinda, (ext. 130). Unfortunately, a parishioner’s name is not always on the daily list of Holy Name patients; so we ask that you give us a call with the information (name, which building, room #, etc.). This way you or your loved one will be assured of a visit.

LOAVES AND FISHES

This Monday members of our parish will gather at South Congregational Church on Maple Street to serve a meal to the hungry of our city. We are sure you will find it to be a positive and rewarding experience, and it is so

organized, it won’t take a lot of your time. American Chop Suey is the meal we serve, and you are welcome to use your own recipe. If you can help with the cooking or serving, please call Ann at the rectory, 733-5823, or if you decide to come and don’t have time to call ahead, that’s fine, too. Meals can either be dropped off between 4:15 and 4:30p.m., or stay and serve and you’ll be on your way home in an hour. You’ll find plenty of safe, off-street parking right in the church parking lot.

EDUCATION

Religious education classes will meet in the Dickinson Street school building after the

10:30a.m. Mass. As in years past, students will be presenting the Stations of the Cross on Friday, April

12th. Each grade will be presenting two stations. Afterwards, students are invited to the Social Center for (cheese) pizza.

On Palm Sunday, the students will participate in the Palm Sunday Children’s Mass. There are no classes after this Palm Sunday Mass.

DIOCESAN PRAYER SERVICES On Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m., there will be two diocesan Prayer Services for Healing, in response to the sex abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. The prayer services will be held simultaneously at St. Michael’s Cathedral, 254 State St., in Springfield and at St. Joseph Church, 414 North St., in Pittsfield. They are being held to show prayerful solidarity with the victims of abuse and their families as well as for healing in the Church and a commitment to remain steadfast in protecting our children, youth and all vulnerable populations. All are invited and encouraged to attend and lend their voice in prayer.
