Transcript of Stacy Gotlib-Principal - Volusia County...
Dear River Springs Middle School Community: Happy New Year! I trust everyone had a restful and enjoyable winter break. We are looking forward to a great 2013! The school year is rapidly moving along. We are now in our second semester. FCAT testing will begin on Tuesday, February 26 with FCAT Writes Testing. Please be sure students are rested and eat a healthy breakfast before school. The Volusia County High School Showcase will take place at the Volusia County Fair Grounds on Tuesday, January 15, 2013. This is a great opportunity for our 8th graders to see what is offered in our high schools. The event is from 5:00 PM until 7:30 PM. Congratulations to RSMS Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Tamara Neusch. Mrs. Neusch teaches 8th Grade math. Mrs. Neusch, along with other Volusia County nominees will be recognized at a Teacher of the Year Banquet on Friday, January 25, 2013. Now that school is back in full session, it is imperative that we stay focused on academics. We encourage parents to stay updated on your child’s progress via the Pinnacle system. As always, thank you for your continued support. Go Gators! Sincerely,

Field Studies in American History
We are fortunate at River Springs to have a companion course in American
History that takes students on five field studies during the school year. Some of
our brightest and most talented students are able to experience history by visiting
the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach, or later in the year a slave
plantation and a Civil War fort. The first of those five field studies was to New
Smyrna Beach, a town with a rich colonial history. Victoria Favorit is one of 26
Humanities students and in the article below she describes her experience on the
field study. New Smyrna Humanities Field Trip
By: Victoria Favorit
During our humanities field trip (this fall) we traveled to New Smyrna Old Fort Park,
New Smyrna Sugar Mill Ruins, Mosquito Lagoon, and The New Smyrna Museum of History.
New Smyrna is believed to be the second oldest city in North America. The Timucuan Native
Americans were the first inhabitants of New Smyrna. Visitors continue to visit the cities’ more
than thirty historical sites. New Smyrna captures the attention of tourists making them want to
come back year after year.
At the New Smyrna Sugar Mill Ruins I learned that
it was built in 1830 by Henry Cruger, and William
Depeyster. The mill was run by slaves. The area
around the sugar mill was once a beautiful field of
sugar cane. The fields were destroyed by Seminole
Indians. Some of the mills architecture includes its
beautiful arches. The New Smyrna Sugar Mill sits on
600 acres of land.
Another stop we made on the field trip was New
Smyrna Old Fort Park. Most people believe the ruins are an
old Spanish fort but the true purpose of the structure is still
unknown. The ruins are rumored to be the Turnball Mansion;
the residency of Andrew Turnball, a physician from Scotland.
It was interesting to see the beautiful architecture, and the
intricate design of the ruins. The New Smyrna Old Fort Park
was my favorite part of the field trip because we got to climb
on and explore the ruins hands on.
A special thanks goes out to Science Teacher, Mrs. Laura French for all her hard work and school volunteers and teachers who helped with set up and judging — Hamp Arendale, Fred Birnie, John Darby, Julie Miller, Cris Mitchell, Stan Mitchell, Ken Parker, Hermia Guilliams-Reid, David Rivera and Jessica Vergara. Also thanks to PTSA for providing snacks for our volunteers and Business Partner, Dileo's Italian Deli for the discount and free delivery on their lunch. The District Science Fair Event will take place on Saturday, January 19th. Good luck to our students as they move on in the competition.
