Dear Roadrunner Families,
Where has the first quarter gone? It seems like yesterday we were at “Meet the
Teacher Day”. As we continue to move forward and head full steam into the sec-
ond quarter, please take this time to review your son or daughter progress. Pro-
gress reports, report cards and the online grade book are excellent tools to keep you
informed of how your child is achieving in class. If you notice missing work, low-
er than normal grades or have questions about the assignments, I encourage you to
reach out to your child’s teacher now. Do not wait until the final quarter. Pay par-
ticular attention in the area of Language Arts. Reading and comprehension is one
of the most important disciplines taught in school. Our students practice their read-
ing and comprehension every day, the more practice they have with this skill the
more they will improve. Reading is a life-long skill and will be used for a lifetime.
November will mark the beginning of our newly formed PTA. I would like to
thank our new President (Keli Marks) Secretary (Kim Cummings) and Treasurer
(Lauren Austin) for volunteering to rebuild our PTA this year. We will be having a
membership drive this month and if you are interested in joining please fill out the
flyer and send it in with the membership fee to your child’s teacher. Also, during
the month of December PTA will be sponsoring a Holiday Shoppe for students to
purchase inexpensive gifts for family members. Information will be sent out in De-
cember. This is a new beginning for our PTA and I look forward to seeing what we
can accomplish for our school and our students.
November also brings Thanksgiving and the beginning of the holiday season. With
this, we will take part in the district wide canned food and non-perishable food
drive. During the week of November 14 through November 21, please consider
donating to those in need. Each student who brings in five or more items for the
cause will have his or her name entered for a chance to win some awesome prizes
that will be announced on November 22 during our morning news. Last year our
school raised more than 1300 pounds of food lets’ see if we can double it.
Finally, with Thanksgiving right around the corner, I would like to thank you for
allowing us to work with you and your children. Have a wonderful and safe
Thanksgiving.

Pop It Up!! This year SGA has taken over pop tab collection at OCS. Part of the proceeds will be used to help families in our community. The rest of the proceeds will be used to support SGA’s club activities. The class that brings in the most pop tabs will earn an ice cream par-ty at the end of the school year. Please make sure your teacher’s name is written on the bag so the pop tabs will count for your class. Ms. Cordts and Mrs. Kennedy SGA Sponsors
Volusia County Schools defines Bullying as:
Systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological
distress on one or more students or employees. The term “bullying”
shall include “cyber-bullying.” It is further defined as unwanted and re-
peated written, verbal, or physical behavior, including any threatening,
insulting, or dehumanizing gesture, by a student or adult that is severe
or pervasive enough to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive edu-
cational environment; cause discomfort or humiliation; or unreasona-
bly interfere with the individual’s school performance or participation;
and may involve but is not limited to:
If you have any concerns about bullying and your child, please contact
your child’s teacher, administration or the guidance counselor. We also
have Bully Boxes located in the clinic and media center for students to
anonymously report bullying issues.
The Florida Department of Education has a great web page with infor-
mation and links about bullying at
