The Class of 2014 donated an original Don Drumm Celtic Cross as a class gift to the school. It is a reflection of the Irish- Catholic heritage. The Celtic Cross is said to have been introduced by St. Patrick and is a symbol of Christianity and the sun cross. The four living creatures around the “IHS” symbol are the representations of the gospel writers, Mat-thew, Mark, Luke, and John. St. Matthew is the winged man, St. Mark the lion, St. Luke an ox, and St. John an eagle. St. Matthew is the winged man because he begins his gospel by tracing Jesus’ genealogy; St. Mark is the lion

because he opens his gospel with John the Baptist “roaring”; St. Luke is an ox because it is

an animal of sacrifice and his gospel gives a detailed account of the sacrificial death of Christ; St. John is an eagle because he soars above the others. IHS is a monogram for Jesus Christ’s name. The Chi-Rho is an important Christian symbol and was adopted from the Roman Emperor Constantine, representiong the first two letters in Christ’s name. The symbol of the shamrock is a representa-tion of the school’s proud Irish heritage. It also has religious significant be-cause St. Patrick believed it represented the trinity.

The new Celtic Cross hangs outside the chapel in the Student Center.

Hurricane Odile slams Mexico’s Baja California Hurricane Odile blazed a trail of destruction through Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula on September 15 that leveled everything from ram-shackle homes to luxury hotels and big-box stores, leaving entire neighborhoods as disaster zones. Odile made landfall near Cabo San Lucas the

previous night as a powerful category 3 hurricane. Many homes and businesses were reduced to shells with only the core structure intact. Odile con-tinued towards the state of Baja California Sur with strong winds and heavy rains as it moved northward, but it weakened to a Category 1 hurricane and downgraded to a tropical storm by the next day.

700 feared dead in two Mediterranean boat wrecks This year has become one of the deadliest ever for migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea. Two heavily loaded boats were wrecked re-cently, possibly killing 700 people fleeing Africa for Europe — the same number as died during all of last year. That raises the total number

of migrants killed on the sea in 2014 to about 2,900, according to estimates from the International Organization for Migration. About 500 Syr-ians, Palestinians, Egyptians, and Sudanese are feared dead after their boat was rammed and sunk off the Malta coast last week. Another 200 are feared dead in the wreck of a second boat that was carrying at least 250 African migrants to Europe.

Man who set himself on fire, stepped into traffic could be connected to a homicide Authorities say a man who stepped into traffic in front of a semi and then set himself on fire on a Northeast Ohio highway has been connected to a woman found dead in a Cleveland home. Cleveland police said Tuesday that 28-year-old Hugo Ramos is a suspect in

the slaying of the woman, whose name and cause of death haven’t been released. Her body was found based on information from Ramos. He got a container of gasoline from his car, swallowed some of it, poured the rest on his body and then set himself on fire as three children sat in his car.

More U.S. troops are going to Baghdad The U.S is adding about 350 more troops to help protect the American Embassy

Asian nations prepare to defend themselves from ChinaSeveral Asian nations are preparing to defend themselves against a resurgent China that’s asserting its territorial claims all along the East Asian coast. The scramble to spend more de-

fense dollars comes from disputes with China over contested reefs and waters. Asian countries now account for about half of the world’s arms’ imports, with China leading the way by quadrupling its annual military budget over the past decade. The growth in military spending has largely kept pace with economic expansion.

Powerful storm comes to the Akron area A powerdul storm swept through the Akron area on September 10. Many power lines went down leaving 1,600

people in Summit County without power. The National Weather Service reported a tornado touching down at 6 p.m. Several houses in Stow lost parts of their roofs and many residents reported seeing debris whipping

around in the air. Even though many houses were damaged in the storm, there were no injuries. Students of Akron University and Kent State Univer-sity were told to take shelter. Students from Trinity volleyball and Padua soccer teams waiting at STVM for their games had to take shelter along with STVM students and staff on the bottom floor of the school.

Mother Nature sends extremes across U.S. Fires, floods and storms have been occurring on various fronts of the nation. A 32,000-acre wildfire is burning in the western tip of the Mojave Des-

ert in northern Los Angeles County. Evacuation orders have been lifted but the fires continue to rage on. St. Louis, along the Mississippi River has been a major flood sight with waters rising over 10 feet. In “tornado alley,” Oklahoma was afraid of another tornado, but it just ended up being a severe storm. Extreme flooding also occurred in Houston, Texas. With all this unusual weather, it seems as if Mother Nature is trying to throw much of the nation into one extreme or another.
