THE PASTOR’S CORNER by Fr. Rees Doughty
J ust last week, we heard happy news from the Minnesota parish which provides our family formation program for religious
education of the children and families of St. Thomas - St. Joseph (soon to be St. Marianne Cope). One of their young men recently had been ordained a priest. Vocations to the Lord’s service are always an especial blessing to a parish, a sign of the presence of grace and of the realistic hope of the continuing Presence of the Eucharist. St. Paul Parish in Ham Lake, Minnesota began their family formation program nearly thirty years ago as a way to help parents hand on the Faith to their children. Recent studies have shown that the parents’ role in teaching their children about Christ and his Church makes the difference in whether their kids as adults live a life of faith. Since their program began, St. Paul’s has had thirteen young men and women answer God’s invitation to become priests and consecrated religious. It must seem incredible to most people that any young person today would decide to follow Christ in so dramatic a way as to forsake marriage and family for the service of God’s people. Nevertheless, signs that a divine call still reaches the hearts of men and women are happening. In July, the Huffington Post reported that more and more young women are choosing to become religious sisters, donning the habit and veil and living in community. (See “Behold the Millennial Nuns”, by Eve Fairbanks, https://www.huffpost.com/highline/article/millennial-nuns/, July 11, 2019.). “What on earth is going on,” the author asked. The Catholic Herald’s cover story this summer trumpeted: “The brothers are back: Why traditional religious orders are
springing to life” (Catholic Herald, Issue 6922, July 5, 2019). I see the phenomenon whenever I go to celebrate Mass for the Sisters of Life at their motherhouse: a chapel full of postulants and the sisters who oversee their formation. (Long ago, I dated a woman who is now a sister with the Nashville Dominicans, a thriving order with an average age, I’m guessing, of 30.) This grace has been extended to our parish, it seems. Anthony Maxson, a parishioner since childhood at St. Joseph, who often attends our 9:00 am Mass with his family on Sunday, will be entering the pre-theology program of the seminary this fall, with the hope of eventually attending St. Joseph Seminary. Anthony just graduated from Oklahoma State University where he studied aviation administration. (He recently returned from Alaska where he worked in a factory processing salmon!). He credits his family and his parish for helping him grow in the faith that helped him discern a possible vocation. This fall as well, Peter McGovern will be entering the inquiry program at St. Joseph Seminary to study for the diaconate. Peter is a member of our parish with his wife, Aimee, and his children. Retired from the New York City Police Department, Peter led the Knights of Columbus as Grand Knight this past year. Over two-thirds of US Catholics believe the Eucharist to be merely symbolic, according to the Pew Foundation (https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/08/05/transubstantiation-eucharist-u-s-catholics/). Could it be that the Lord is sending the workers He needs to the harvest? Pray for Anthony and Peter, and pray for vocations from our parish!

August 22: The Queenship of Mary (This feast was established by Pope Pius XII in 1954.)
“As Christ is our Lord and King by a special title because He redeemed us, so the Blessed Virgin (is our Lady and Queen) because of the unique way in which she has cooperated toward our
redemption by giving of her own substance, by offering Him willingly for us, and by desiring, praying, and bringing about our salvation in a singular way.” - Pope Pius XII

DID YOU KNOW? Facts about St. Marianne Cope…
In November 1885, Mother Marianne opened Kapiolani Home to serve the homeless female children of patients with Hansen’s disease. The decision to house these well children on the same grounds as the hospital where their sick parents were was made because only the Sisters were willing to care for these children.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process whereby adults and teens enter the Catholic Church. For information about the RCIA/T Process, contact Mary Ellen Tiernan at [email protected] or 845.661.8586.
