TRUST IN GOD On this final Sunday of Advent our scriptures focus on the historical birth of Jesus, who is son of David and Son of God, child and king, Jesus and Em-manuel.

Isaiah the prophet begs Ahaz to ask for a sign, to allow God to offer him reassurance of the survival of the Davidic dynasty. The king hypocritically re-fuses to “tempt the Lord” in that way (Isaiah 7:12), but the prophet foretells the birth of a son, an heir to the throne, who will prove the Lord’s enduring protection of God’s chosen lineage on the throne of David. The child will be called Emmanuel.

Matthew’s reference to this history in his descrip-tion of the birth of Jesus highlights the contrast between the faithless refusal of trust shown by Ahaz, and the complete trust in God shown by Mary and Joseph in bringing about the birth of Je-sus Christ.

CCD NEWS

We will have the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Friday, January 3rd, from 9:00am to 9:00pm. Please come and join us for Adoration on this First Friday. We invite you to sign up for an

hour of adoration. The sign-up sheet is on the parish bulletin board in the church hall. Please consider signing up for an hour to ensure we have every hour covered, and hopefully more than one person per hour can come. We will have the celebration of mass at 12:00pm.

BLESSED SACRAMENT ADORATION

The main focus of advent is to spiritually prepare ourselves for the spiritual birth of Jesus Christ. As a parish we have done this through meditation, prayer, reflections and re-enacting the journey of the Holy Family prior to the birth of Jesus Christ. There can be many things that can distract us during this time. I am going to continue to pray that all of us might continue in our spiritual journey so that all of us might experience the spiritual birth of Jesus Christ in the hearts of our lives and families. I would hope that all of you will join us for the many masses that we will be having during this Christ-mas season. On behalf of our parish staff, deacons, Fr. Gary and myself, we want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas. May God continue to bless our parish of St. Thomas and all our parish families, Fr. Abel

I want to once again, thank everyone who made our celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe a great success. Thank you all who donated the various items of food, flowers, mariachi and labor to build the altar. I want to also thank Valencia Market for their constant support of our parish, especially in the celebrations of Our Lady of Gua-dalupe and posadas. Lastly, thank you all who help this weekend in many ways to decorate and prepare our church for Christmas.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Gospel: Mt 1:18-24

R. Alleluia, alleluia. The virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and they shall

name him Emmanuel. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

R. Aleluya, aleluya. He aquí que la vir-gen concebirá y dará a luz un hijo, y le pon-drán el nombre de Emmanuel, que quiere

decir Dios-con-nosotros. R. Aleluya.

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet un-willing to expose her to shame, decided to di-vorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us." When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.
