Basic Ministry of Care Training Course

for service to those in need, and to advance

REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL

Today’s our long Gospel passage has been taken from the Gospel of John. John's Gospel is different from the other three. It is the result of a prolonged meditation by John’s community on the person and saving action of Jesus. The Gospel has been written with the specific purpose of bringing the reader to a faith in Jesus as God: ’These things have been written so that you may understand that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that, believing this, you may have life in

his name’ (Jn 20:31) Today’s fragment, rich with symbols and allusions, presents an encounter and a dialogue between Jesus and an unnamed Samaritan women. This dialogue initiated by Jesus culminates in a life that is transformed; brought up from the state of hopelessness to a new and vibrant life. All this became possible because of Jesus. It is He who initiates the conversation with the woman and, gently with great patience, leads her to seek another meaning for the water she needs. It is marvelous to see how great is our God. He, Jesus, does not hesitate to break social barriers and taboos: gender discrimination, ritual purity, and religious hostility in order to bring sinners back to life. This week let us reflect on this beautiful narrative. Do we thirst for many things and are restless in our search? Can we identify with the Samaritan woman? Do we notice in ourselves her initial resistance to growth, her evasions? If yes, then let us pray for a grace to be open to the stirs and inspirations of the Spirit in our hearts so we also may grow in understanding and faith.

ZAMYŚLENIE NAD EWANGELIĄ

Fragment dzisiejszego czytania pochodzi z Ewangelii według św. Jana i jest dosyć długi, wielowątkowy i pełen symboli. Ewangelia wg św. Jana różni się znacznie od Ewangelii synoptycznych. Jest ona rezultatem wieloletniej refleksji przez wspólnotę Janową nad osobą Jezusa i Jego zbawczym dziełem. Celem Ewangelii Jana jest doprowadzenie jej czytelnika do uwierzenia, że Jezus jest Synem Bożym mającym moc dać życie. ‘Te zaś zapisano, abyście wierzyli, że Jezus jest Mesjaszem, Synem Bożym, i abyście wierząc mieli życie w imię Jego’ (J 20,31). Dzisiejszy fragment pełen symboli i różnych aluzji przedstawia spotkanie i dialog pomiędzy Jezusem i bezimienną Samarytanką. W wyniku owego, zainicjowanego przez Jezusa, dialogu następuje transformacja zdeformowanego życia; podniesione ze stanu beznadziei - powstaje nowe, przemienione i tętniące wigorem życie. Stało się możliwym z powodu Jezusa. To On jest Tym, który inicjuje rozmowę z samarytańską kobietą i delikatnie, z ogromną cierpliwością doprowadza ją do odkrycia prawdziwego znaczenia wody, której ona potrzebuje. Jakże dobry i współczujący jest nasz Bóg. On, Jezus, nie waha się łamać społecznych zakazów i barier takich jak: dyskryminacja ze względu na płeć, rytualnej czystości i wrogości religijnej - w celu doprowadzenia grzeszników z powrotem do życia. W tym tygodniu znajdźmy trochę czasu na refleksję nad tym pięknym opowiadaniem. Zastanówmy się czy dręczą nas pragnienia dotyczące gromadzenia coraz większych dóbr? Czy doświadczamy z tego powodu ciągłych niepokojów? W jaki sposób możemy identyfikować się z Samarytanką? Czy zauważamy również w nas samych taki sam opór przeciw wzrastaniu, takie same uniki? Jeśli tak, to módlmy się prosząc o łaskę bycia otwartymi na dotykające nasze serca poruszenia i inspiracje Ducha Świętego i na przyjęcie ofiarowywanego nam daru wiary.

Question: What can I do to keep up the spir-it and practice of Lent in my life?

Answer: Lent is an intense retreat, a forty-day period of reflection and pen-

ance that prepares us to celebrate the passion, death, and resurrec-tion of Christ. Our communication

with God and our awareness of him is the purpose of prayer.

Setting aside extra time each day helps intensify the season. Prayer

includes daily Mass, Stations of the Cross, communal penance ser-

vices, and private confession. Making restitution for sin as well

as disciplining our hearts and minds to focus on God is the pur-pose of penance. It helps us re-store a sense of balance to our

souls, thrown out of kilter by sin. Penance includes personal sacri-fice, self-denial, fasting, almsgiv-ing, and charitable works. Finally, spiritual practices help us sharpen our understanding and insight in-to the meaning and understand-ing of our faith. When you take

your faith seriously, you do what is necessary to follow Jesus more closely, to integrate your life and

your faith more carefully.
