Third Sunday of Lent Third Sunday of Lent Third Sunday of Lent Third Sunday of Lent - Year A Year A Year A Year A - 15 March 2020 15 March 2020 15 March 2020 15 March 2020 Water from the floods in Western Queensland and Northern NSW have just reached Menindee near Broken Hill. Last year we heard of the terrible loss of fish because of the lack of fresh water and we have seen and heard the terrible devastation the drought has wrought on our land and our people. Some will never be able to recover, and others will struggle to replace breeding livestock which they had to sell during the most devastating drought. The water brings life which we can see outside our Church with our own lawn. After the rain there is new life and growth and the same can be said for us in our Spiritual lives. Sometimes we go through periods of Spiritual dryness – when things go wrong, we can become negative, our sense of equilibrium is put off balance, when we can become anxious and afraid and where doubt and worry can over-come us. Like the people in the desert led by Moses – they begin to doubt God and turn to pagan ways Today’s Psalm response “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts” can resonate with us as we face difficult times. We are called to listen deeply to the Lord, to trust in God, have confidence in his love for us and to be faithful. Jesus in his dialogue with the woman at the well seems to be at odds with her and they sometimes seem to be having parallel conversations – eventually they end up on the same page and she finally ‘gets it’ and goes off to bring others to Jesus as she recognises that he is the Messiah. People come to faith in all sorts of ways and through all sorts of people. Today I invite you to think of those who brough you to faith. Who spoke to you about Jesus? Who helped you or challenged you in your faith? Who helped you in difficult times on your faith journey? Where do you turn in difficult times? Life and grace come to us through the gift of faith and our Sacramental life, the Word of God and our life of Prayer. Lent is a gift from God for us to renew our love for God and others. Let us use this time well and thoughtfully. “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” Yours in the Lord Jesus Christ, Fr. Water from the floods in Western Queensland and Northern NSW have just reached Menindee near Broken Hill.

Like the people in the desert led by Moses – they begin to doubt God and turn to pagan ways

Today’s Psalm response “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts” can resonate with us as we face difficult times.

“If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God,

the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended into hell;

on the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;

from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and life everlasting. Amen.

Living the Gospel – Personal encounter The Samaritan woman’s personal encounter with Jesus compels her to start spreading the good news about the amazing man she has met. She meets Jesus face to face and feels compelled to act on what she has felt. Lent is a time for each of us to again – or for the first time – seek out a face to face encounter with Jesus. Through prayer, contemplation on scripture

or reflection on encountering Jesus in the face of others, we build a one to one relationship with Jesus. When we acknowledge this relationship, like the Samaritan woman, we are compelled to act on it.

Second Sunday of Lent

15th March 2020

Father of four, Barry, embodies resilience and strength. Growing up in a tough environment, he had to look inside himself to make the right choices for himself and his family. Barry, and others like him, were able to take part in a cultural healing program called Red Dust Healing. This program encourages participants to examine their own personal hurt and allows them to heal from within, addressing family and personal relationships and what may be been life-long patterns of violence, abuse and neglect. Today, thanks to the Caritas support, he’s an inspirational father to his four girls and a leader in his community.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2020 and help vulnerable people like Barry, so that they are empowered to assist members of their communities in Australia.

Let’s Go Further, Together. You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

During the

Season of Lent,

we might consider,

where in our own

lives do we need to go

further in love

and compassion? This year, Project Compassion is

built around the theme of Global

Community – Go Further

Together. We’re at a time of increasing global change and tense dialogue, so the idea of the ‘common good’ is more

important than ever.

National advice on liturgical implications in light of coronavirus (COVID-19). The following recommendations are believed to be proportionate to the current understanding of the coronavirus and the risks outlined by health authorities. They are consistent with the Catholic Church’s prerogative to protect those who are most vulnerable. Individuals should consider their own health, including any potential to infect others with a contagious disease, before attending a public liturgical celebration.

† Holy Water should be temporarily removed from stoups at the doors of churches to reduce the possibility of transmission of the virus. Holy Water should continue to be available for people to take home. Please ask the priest for Holy Water.

† Parishes and other settings where liturgies are celebrated should make alcohol-based gels or rubs (or like products) available near entrances. Similar provisions should be considered for settings used for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

† When exchanging the Sign of Peace, individuals should avoid shaking hands but say “Peace be with you” and offer a smile, wave, nod or bow.

† All Ministers of Holy Communion should take particular care to wash their hands before and after distributing.

† Parishes should cease distributing Holy Communion from the Chalice until further notice. The faithful should be reminded that Christ is fully present under either species.

† The coronavirus is easily spread through saliva. In celebrations of the Ordinary Form of the Latin Rite, it is therefore recommended that the Body of Christ only be administered in the hand because of the high risk of transmission if people continue to receive on the tongue. Ministers should seek to avoid contact with the communicant's hands.

† The faithful who are too unwell to attend Sunday Mass – whether due to coronavirus or some other condition – or are at particular risk they can honour their Sunday obligation by participating in a time of prayer within the home, reading the Scriptures or watching Mass on television or online (http://bit.ly/MassOnDemand).

TUESDAY 17, MARCH, SAINT PATRICK, BISHOP

MASS AT 9:30AM - ALL WELCOME God our Father,

you sent Saint Patrick to preach your glory to the

people of Ireland. By the help of his prayers, may all Christians proclaim your love to all men. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives

and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for

ever and ever.

St Patrick (385 - 461) He was born in Roman Britain around the end of the 4th century, and died in Ireland about the middle of the 5th century. As a missionary

bishop, he endured many hardships and faced opposition even from his friends and fellow Christians.

Nevertheless, he worked hard to conciliate, to evangelize, and to educate local chieftains and their

families. He is remembered for his simplicity and pastoral care, for his humble trust in God, and for his fearless preaching of the gospel to the very people who had

enslaved him in his youth.

THURSDAY 19, MARCH, SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUSE OF THE

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY MASS AT 9:30AM - ALL WELCOME

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that by Saint Joseph's

intercession your Church may constantly watch over

the unfolding of the mysteries of human

salvation, whose beginnings you entrusted

to his faithful care. Through our Lord Jesus

Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

St Joseph Nothing is known of St Joseph except what is said of him in the Gospels. He was a carpenter; he accepted the will of God; and he supported Mary and brought up Jesus. From the human character of his son we can see that he was a good and responsible father. He is widely venerated as a patron of artisans who honourably do good work with the gifts God has given them, and of workers in general. To those who exercise the role of an adoptive parent, whether formally or informally, whether over one child or as the support of a whole family, he is a source of inspiration.

RICA: First Scrutiny of the Elect (3rd Sunday of Lent)

This Sunday, and for the next two Sundays, we will celebrate the Scrutinies.

According to the Church’s Rites, “the scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is

upright, strong, and good.” We will also “hand over” (traditio) the Creed to our catechumen, which she will

then “hand back” at the Easter Vigil when she makes her Baptismal Promises.

Please keep our Elect ‘Ly W.’ in your prayers as she makes

her final journey to the Easter Sacraments.
