In more recent years, this has meant that he has been the legal employer of the school staff. As a consequence of recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Abuse, that arrangement will change markedly within the next year or two. The administrative responsibility of “employer” will move to a new Archdiocesan Education Board, directly responsible to the Archbishop. The finer details of this arrangement are currently under extensive discussion and evaluation. In fifty years of parish ministry, without exception, I have respected and admired the Principals of the parish schools with which I have been associated. When I arrived at St. Simon’s at the end of July 2017, I met the Principal of our Parish School - and immediately it was clear to me that St. Simon’s was being led by a man of vision, faith, energy and unbridled commitment to doing all he could to pass on the next generation a Christ-centred faith and compassion, combined with an excellence in academic education which would be of ongoing value. For fourteen years, Phil has been Principal of St. Simon’s and has led our Parish School with a warm, personal engagement with staff, students and their families. This has been strongly combined with a commitment to excellence in education. His time as Principal does not conclude, “technically speaking”, until January next year, but next Friday will be our chance to say “Thank You” to a man who has been central to the lives of the several thousand children who have attended St. Simon’s during his dedicated leadership. A Mass of Appreciation will be celebrated at 5.00pm in our newly–refurbished church, after which we will move to the magnificent new classroom block which wouldn’t be there without Phil’s vison and administrative ability. This was a project in which he was most capably supported by Maree Fatouros, his Deputy Principal for the past three years. Both our parish and our school are highly indebted to them both. On Fete Day we celebrated what it is to be part of a vibrant parish community. Transcript of St. Simon the Apostle Parish · PARISH DIARY Monday November 25 9.15am: Mass followed by Rosary...

From the inception of Catholic Schools in Australia, the Parish Priest has been responsible for the administration, conduct and culture of the school.

Next Friday, Phil’s lifetime of commitment to children and their families under the umbrella of Catholic Education will be recognised at St. Simon’s as his many years of teaching service draw to a close.

This was a project in which he was most capably supported by Maree Fatouros, his Deputy

Principal for the past three years. Both our parish and our school are highly indebted to them both.

On Fete Day we celebrated what it is to be part of a vibrant parish community. On Friday, we have the chance to say “Thank You” to someone who has given wonderful example and leadership to build that community into what it is today.

Let’s do that together with genuine gratitude.

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC YOUTH FESTIVAL

(ACYF) PERTH 2019

Perth, Sun. Dec. 8 to Tue. Dec. 10 provides an opportunity for young people to celebrate the vitality of the Church in Australia. A large group from Melbourne will attend, but some of our youth don’t have the means to self-fund their attendance, and you can support them.

Support the St Simon’s ACYF team by taking and returning one of the coupons or helping to sell one of the boxes of chocolates. You can donate via the new CDF-sponsored Donation Point Tap in the foyer. By swiping your credit card, you will be making a donation of $5 (pre-set) to help St Simon’s pilgrims.

CHURCH REFURBISHMENT UPDATE The carpeting is nearly finished in the church, with the remainder along the walls to be done as part of the next carpeting project that will include the foyer (narthex) and chapel. We are trying to arrange the remaining carpeting to be done in the week 16-20 December, but haven’t yet confirmed that with our supplier. In the meantime, please avoid walking on uncarpeted concrete and avoid using the doors into the chapel.

We need to do some remedial work to the brickwork in the foyer (narthex) of the church before carpeting the foyer. That work is scheduled for the week 2-6 Dec. The church will be available during that week, but please take care and walk around the building works during that week.

The building work in the foyer will be done by Robert Verdouw, who specialises in commercial building work and projects, whether small, medium or large. He can be contacted on 0419 503 268 or [email protected] if you have need of such work.

Peter Evans (Business Manager) ………………………………………………………………….…………………....……….

LOCATION OF PEW PLAQUES The new pews are in place in the church and we are now planning to get the plaques made and installed. We will be allowing parishioners who donated money towards the pews to select the position in the church for their plaque/plaques. They will be given the choice of nominating a position from those still available or allowing us to do so for them.

Notifications will be sent in 5 batches of about 20 each based on the date the donation was received, with the second batch starting on Mon. 25 Nov.

Parishioners in each batch will have one exclusive week from notification to make their choice, or can make it any time after that in the booking period. They can make their choice either via TryBooking or by contacting Peter Evans at the Parish Office.

Please keep an eye out for the notification, which will have more details. ….………………………………………………………….……….……..……………..….

SOUP/SUPPER AND SOUL Christmas Breakup gathering on Thu. Dec. 5 at 7.30pm. Please bring a plate to share Christmas cheer and reflect.

Soup (Supper) and Soul will resume Thu, Feb 6, 2020.

November 24th 2019 - Feast of Christ the King

First reading 2 Samuel 5:1-3

All the tribes of Israel then came to David at Hebron. ‘Look’ they said ‘we are your own flesh and blood. In days past when Saul was our king, it was you who led Israel in all their exploits; and the Lord said to you, “You are the man who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you shall be the leader of Israel.”’ So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a pact with them at Hebron in the presence of the Lord, and they anointed David king of Israel.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 121(122):1-5 Second reading Colossians 1:12-20

We give thanks to the Father who has made it possible for you to join the saints and with them to inherit the light.

Because that is what he has done: he has taken us out of the power of darkness and created a place for us in the kingdom of the Son that he loves, and in him, we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins.

He is the image of the unseen God and the first-born of all creation, for in him were created all things in heaven and on earth: everything visible and everything invisible, Thrones, Dominations, Sovereignties, Powers – all things were created through him and for him. Before anything was created, he existed, and he holds all things in unity. Now the Church is his body, he is its head.

As he is the Beginning, he was first to be born from the dead, so that he should be first in every way; because God wanted all perfection to be found in him and all things to be reconciled through him and for

him, everything in heaven and everything on earth, when he made peace by his death on the cross.

Gospel Luke 23:35-43

The people stayed there before the cross watching Jesus. As for the leaders, they jeered at him. ‘He saved others,’ they said ‘let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.’ The soldiers mocked him too, and when they approached to offer vinegar they said, ‘If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.’ Above him there was an inscription: ‘This is the King of the Jews.’

One of the criminals hanging there abused him. ‘Are you not the Christ?’ he said. ‘Save yourself and us as well.’ But the other spoke up and rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God at all?’ he said. ‘You got the same sentence as he did, but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus,’ he said ‘remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ ‘Indeed, I promise you,’ he replied ‘today you will be with me in paradise.’
