St. Simon the Apostle Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 16, 2016

November 5th, 2016 , Mass of Remembrance Our annual Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated on Saturday, November 5 t h , at 9:00am. While the families of those whose funerals have been celebrated here at St. Simon since last November will receive a special invitation to attend this Mass, all parishioners are also invited to attend as we gather as a community to remember all our deceased fellow parishioners and loved ones. A reception will be held in the lower Church hall immediately following the Mass. Additionally, over the course of the centuries, another wonderful custom has developed in the Church in which we not only remember our deceased loved ones on those particular days, but also throughout the entire month of November. As a way of bringing this custom to St. Simon, the Liturgy Committee will be erecting a shrine in Church which will stand during the entire month of November. The shrine will include one of our large wooden crosses and some tables. Please watch next weekend’s bulletin for more information how to sign up to attend the Mass and when to turn your pictures in for our November Shrine to remember those we have lost, but never forgotten. We invite all parishioners to bring photographs of your deceased loved ones to be displayed throughout the month of November in this shrine. We will accept pictures of all sizes, but would prefer pictures 5x7" or smaller (framed or unframed), and we would ask that you print your name on the back of the photograph (so we know to whom to return the pictures). Members of the Liturgy Committee will be available in the foyer before all the Masses on the weekend of October 29-30 to receive the pictures of your deceased loved ones you would like to include in this shrine. Should you have any questions about this shrine, please contact Rick Eschelbach at 314-541-5304.

Dear Friends in Christ, It is remarkable that we celebrate the 90th anniversary of World Mission Sunday in this, the Year of Mercy. The Gospel calls us to bring the Good News to all nations, showing mercy and offering salvation to all humanity. In his message for World Mission Sunday, celebrated this year on October 23rd, Pope Francis wrote: “When mercy encounters a person, it brings deep joy to the Father’s heart; for from the beginning the Father has lovingly turned towards the most vulnerable, because his greatness and power are revealed precisely in his capacity to identify with the young, the marginalized and the oppressed (cf. Deut 4:31; Ps 86:15; 103:8; 111:4)… All peoples and cultures have the right to receive the message of salvation which is God’s gift to every person. This is all the more necessary when we consider how many injustices, wars, and humanitarian crises still need resolution. Missionaries know from experience that the Gospel of forgiveness and mercy can bring joy and reconciliation, justice and peace.” Many living in over 1,111 mission territories worldwide will only encounter Christ through the work of missionaries. These men and women tirelessly proclaim the Gospel, baptize new believers, celebrate the Eucharist, and care for their flocks, in all circumstances. While many of us cannot travel to the ends of the earth to share the Gospel, we can foster a missionary spirit and offer generously our prayers and support. As Pope Francis states: “Let us not close our hearts within our own particular concerns, but let us open them to all of humanity.” Please prayerfully consider making a generous sacrificial offering on October 23rd for World Mission Sunday. These offerings, made through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, enable missionaries to show God’s great mercy in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Pacific Islands, and all the ends of the earth. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis

Last week we reflected on how we consider and act toward our neighbor. Doing good, the works of charity, needs to originate from desiring the good of another, having goodwill toward others. St Paul says it well in 1 Cor. 13: 1-7 when he lists many good actions but repeatedly says “if I do not have love“...I have nothing, I gain nothing. How though do we change our hearts, our attitudes so they are more like the mind of Christ, that we can actually love our neighbor, wish them well? Pray daily for a sincere change, a softening of heart. Pray daily for those you do not like, for their good, whatever that may be. God knows what they need, we don’t. That doesn’t mean we become ”buddies”, only that we no longer harbor ill will towards them. Jesus, show me Your ways. May I have Your Heart, Your Wisdom, Your Love.

Corner of Mercy for your reflection:

ANNUAL COAT AND BLANKET DRIVE The Saint Simon Conference of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society will be collecting CLEAN, usable coats and blankets of all sizes. You may put your donations in the collection barrels set up in the church foyer. We will collect coats and blankets from Monday, October 10, to Monday, October 31. We are also accepting CLEAN, new or used gloves, mittens, scarves and winter hats. There will also be barrels available in the school and Simon Says for your donations. The coats and blankets will be distributed to organizations serving the south county area, Sts. Peter & Paul homeless shelter and the SVDP Conference in Park Hills, MO. Please help us keep our brothers and sisters in Christ warm this winter. Thank you for your support.

Repentance means more than merely saying “I’m sorry” for something you’ve done wrong. Saying “I’m sorry” and mean-ing it is, of course, an important step. But real “contrition” is about doing something that will make amends for the conse-quences of the wrong itself. Once we’re sorry for our sin, we have to resolve not to repeat the wrong and resolve to repair the wrong as much as is possible. Think about whether you might still need to make amends for something—then go do it! (CCC 1451-1454) archstl.org/dynamic
