FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners, A few miscellaneous items this weekend: The diocesan celebration if Mission Sunday is this weekend, but (for our English and Span-ish Masses) we will take up the second collection for the Missions next weekend, October 22nd/23rd. This is due to the dating used by the company that prints our parish-support envelopes. The collection is a most important one, promoting the evangelization which is at the heart of the gospel, so please be generous next weekend. To find out more about the Missions, visit the spe-cial World Mission Sunday websites: mission.org or IAmAMissionary.org. In his message for the occasion this year, Pope Francis has pleaded, “Let us not close our hearts within our own particu-lar concerns, but let us open them to all of humanity”. Speaking of special appeals, thank you for your generosity to the recent “after Mass/at doors” requests for solidarity with the Louisiana flood victims ($2083) and the Italian earthquake victims ($1805). These are genuine acts of mercy on your part. Now that our Italian Night is at hand this weekend, we begin more active promotion for the “St. Raphael’s Got Talent” event set for Saturday night, November12th, at 7:00 pm, in Michael Brenan Hall. Some acts have already steeped up, but we are looking to recruit more for a genuine experience of variety entertainment. If you have a talent or know of someone who is “willing and able”, please step up and let us know. Contact the rectory for more information. Some of you are familiar with John Hwang, who is associated with our Korean community and has participated in or spoken at English-language events here. His solo rendition of the song he himself wrote and sang at the Korean Martyrs 25th Anniversary Concert here was a highlight of that concert. John is a major seminarian at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie (Yonkers) and will be ordained a deacon on Saturday, November 5th. Father Luke and I have been invited to vest him with stole and dalmatic during that liturgy. The following day, Sunday, November 6th, I have invited Deacon John to assist and preach at the English Masses at 8 am and 11 am, and at the Korean Mass at 9:45 am. Since it is also the Family Mass Sunday, we will use the social hour following the 11 am Mass for a little reception in his honor. Please join us as we gratefully affirm his vocation and celebrate this official step on his road to the priesthood. -Father Jerry Jecewiz

World Mission Sunday ‘s special second collection will take place at the English and Spanish Masses at St. Raphael’s next weekend, October 22nd/23rd. Please support the missions. Thanks.

FAMILY MASS CHOIR—AN INVITATION We are ready to start a new year for St. Raphael’s Family Mass Choir and we need your talents. The children and adults working with the choir have done an excellent job over the recent years and have made significant contributions to the liturgical life of St. Raphael’s parish. Children in grades 2 and above who are ready and willing to sing are encouraged to join us. We would also be inter-ested in having any high school students participate. The practices are held one or two Monday’s a month at 7:00PM and the choir will be singing at the monthly Family Masses, Christmas Eve, and other appropriate occasions. Dates and other specific information will follow. The only require-ments are that you attend practice and Mass and behave appropriately. We continue to look for adults who are willing to assist in the singing, who may play a musical instrument or who are will-ing to help with other support functions, such as transportation. If you are interested please fill out this form and return it to the parish rectory, to Sister Christine at the Religious Education Program, Joe Becker or Jan Wnek after Mass. If you have any questions regarding the choir please feel free to call the rectory or call Joe Becker at 718-392-3008 or email Joe at [email protected].
