FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners, As we prepare to begin Lent this Wednesday (Ash Wednesday), we distrib-ute copies of the Little Black Book at Masses today. The book is available in Eng-lish or Spanish. The book contains six-minute reflections on the weekday gospels of Lent. To get into the spirit of the season, you commit to doing this meditation, starting today, the Sunday before Lent begins, and continuing until Easter Sunday, March 27th. The simple idea was the brainchild of the late Bishop Kenneth Untener of Saginaw, Michigan. Of all the Lenten booklets available through the years, I have never seen one as anticipated and as impactful as this one. We even use the children’s edition in our First Communion program. Lent involves fast and abstinence, so those regulations are summarized for you elsewhere in the bulletin. Lent also involves prayer, and we call your attention to the weekly Stations of the Cross: Wednesdays in English after the 9 am Mass; Tuesdays in Spanish at 7:30 pm; and Fridays in Ko-rean at 8 pm. There are also retreat opportunities here: Feb. 5th in Korean; March 5th in Spanish; and May 24th in English (outside of Lent, but connected with the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy). Lent also involves almsgiving, so we invite you to join in Operation Rice Bowl, which benefits 85 million of the planet’s poorest people through the efforts of Catholic Relief Services. Pope Francis has called Catholics to help end world hunger, so consider taking a Rice Bowl today. Read the in-structions on and inside the box. Rice Bowls are also available in Spanish. Another almsgiving opportunity would be the Annual Catholic Appeal, which accomplishes so much good in our Diocese. You’ll be hearing more about that here and from the pulpit in the next few weeks. Let us all enter this holy season in the above spirit of reflecting, praying and committing.

-Father Jerry Jecewiz
