Welcome to Advent Lots of things happening in this next month, in our liturgical celebrations, in the life of our Parish: Christmas at Riverside, the Holy Day of the Im-maculate Conception, Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrations, and the

Christmas Novena with “Las Posadas”. With all of these special activities, what will be our focus for Advent? Will it be a “pretend” time …waiting for Jesus to be born in Bethlehem? Some might see it as a “little Lent”, with the wearing of pur-ple vestments and looking for a time for Confessions at the end of the year. We’ll hear scripture readings that speak to the Second Coming of Christ, the eschatologi-cal tone of the season. Throw into this mix the fact that we’re all preparing for Christmas …and, hopefully there will be some spiritual preparation amidst shop-ping and sending out cards. We are awaiting the Lord’s return in glory, and we are preparing to celebrate the anniversary of his birth. Let us not forget the Lord who is already here. Perhaps our Advent focus could be the spiritual practice of be-ing awake – attentive and aware that God is always pre-sent to us. That awareness of Christ’s presence in our daily lives might be the best preparation for celebrating the Lord’s birth with joy and thanksgiving. The gifts are for people in shelters, Haiti, Love Life program, and EPH (Ecumenical Partnership for Hous-ing). It’s easy! Just take a tag or two off the tree and purchase the item listed. Then return the gift, UNWRAPPED (with the tag you picked) to Church by SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18 and place it under the Giving Tree. People who have had health issues or near-death experiences generally have a greater appreciation for each day being a gift from God. The rest of us usually take for granted that we will be around tomorrow. But when you start to look at each day as a gift, you realize all the little miracles that happen daily and grow in gratitude for all that we have been given.

¡Bienvenidos al Adviento!

Muchas actividades en este próximo mes, tanto en las celebraciones litúrgicas como en la vida de nuestra parroquia: “Navidad en Riverside”, Fiesta de La Inmaculada, Nuestra

Señora de Guadalupe celebraciones, y la Novena de Las Posadas. Con todas estas actividades ¿Cuál será nuestro enfoque para el Adviento? ¿Será un tiempo de “fingido” …que Jesús va a nacer en Belén? Algunos lo ven como una “pequeña Cuares-ma” ..color de purpura y buscando confesarse antes del fin del año. En las Escrituras vamos a oír de la Segunda Venida de Cris-to que da un tono del fin del mundo a esta temporada. Entre todo esto estamos haciendo preparaciones para La Navidad …y, espe-ro que habrá algo de preparación espiritual entre las compras y enviando tarjetas de Navidad a familiares y amigos. Estamos esperando la venida del Señor en su gloria, y esta-mos preparando a celebrar el aniversario de su nacimiento. No olvidemos el Señor que ya está aquí. Quizás nuestro enfoque para el Adviento será el estar atentos ……atentos a nuestro Dios que siempre está presente. La atención de la presencia de Cristo en nuestras vidas diarias sería la mejor preparación para celebrar el nacimiento del Señor con alegría y agradecimiento.

Tome una etiqueta o dos del árbol y compre el artículo indicado. Entonces traiga el regalo SIN ENVOLVER (con la etiqueta que eligió) a la iglesia antes del lunes, 18 de diciembre y colóquelo bajo el árbol. Personas que han tenido problemas de salud o experien-cias cercanas a la muerte generalmente tienen un mayor aprecio por cada día como un regalo de Dios. El resto de nosotros generalmente tomamos por hecho que vamos a estar aquí todavía mañana. Pero cuando empezamos a mirar cada día como un regalo, nos da cuenta de todos los pequeños milagros que suceden todos los días y crecemos en gratitud por todo lo que Dios nos ha dado.

El sábado 3 de diciembre, durante la Misa de 4:00pm, nuestro Obispo David Ricken estará presente para instalar oficialmente el Padre Bill como párroco. Aunque el Padre Bill ha estado con nosotros desde julio, nuestro Obispo ha deseado que esta ceremonia, simple pero muy significativa, se realice. Unámonos con nuestro Obispo en oración, agrade-ciendo a Dios por la disponibilidad y generosidad del Padre Bill en aceptar servir a nuestra parroquia. Después de la Misa tendremos una celebración con comida en Verbeten Hall. Todos están invitados a participar. Se proporcionará el plato principal. Pedi-mos que cada familia traiga una ensalada, postre o refresco.
