Hello to all! I fell and broke my arm so I have not been able to give the appeal for my heart surgery insurance the attention I wanted, so nothing new there. That aside, I am most happy to announce that we actually exceeded our annual appeal goal this year in spite of everything. Thank you all for your generosity. Please remember to fulfill your pledges to the appeal, and our goal will be complete. Thank you all also for your weekly support of our parish. Your

August 2, 2020 (Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time) Prayer of the Faithful

We bring our prayers to God today, knowing that God will take pity and listen to our needs.

For the Church as we work to feed the hungry and spread the Good News throughout the world,

let us pray to the Lord. For those who are oppressed and persecuted, for all who hunger and thirst for justice and freedom, and for an end to racist systems in our country, let us pray to the Lord. For those who work to assist and shelter those who are

homeless, that they will be strengthened in their ministry, let us pray to the Lord.

For those who are grieving the loss of a loved one, that they know the comfort of God’s love and our hope

in the Resurrection, let us pray to the Lord. For our community as we reach out to serve those among our neighbors who are in need, especially during this time

of recovery, let us pray to the Lord. For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID-

19, and for all who have died, let us pray to the Lord. For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all our intentions spoken and unspoken,

let us pray to the Lord. God of compassion, you feed us abundantly out of even

the simplest resources. Hear our grateful prayer and grant these other prayers as well which we make in the name of

Jesus Christ your Son and our Lord. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Sunday Readings for August 2, 2020 (Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time) Reading 1 (Isaiah 55:1–3) Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David. Responsorial Psalm (Ps 145:8–9, 15–16, 17–18) R. (cf. 16) The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. The eyes of all look hopefully to you, and you give them their food in due season; you open your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works. The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. Reading 2 (Rom 8:35, 37–39) Brothers and sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Gospel (Mt 14:13–21) When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me,” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over—twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children. Our readings today remind us of our hunger and thirst, and how God works within us. We human beings are created dependent on food and water, and much more. And God deeply desires that our needs be met. Our physical hunger and thirst point to our deeper hungers: our need for meaning, purpose, and belonging; and most of all, for unity with God. In Matthew’s Gospel passage today, Jesus’ heart is moved with compassion for the people. Jesus not only cures the sick and feeds the multitude, he also establishes bonds of community through the shared meal. Saint Paul shows us that nothing can ultimately separate us from God. Isaiah reminds us of God’s ongoing invitation to us to come and receive. God’s gifts cannot be earned or purchased. God’s grace is offered in abundance. God’s nourishment is the very best possible, and we should accept no substitutes.

In today’s gospel reading there is some discord between Jesus and his disciples. Although Jesus had been the one to leave the crowds and seek out a deserted place to mourn John the Baptist, when the crowds find him and interrupt his solitude, instead of irritation or annoyance, “his heart was moved with pity for them.” The disciples seem to be the ones who are flustered by this turn of events and so take it upon themselves to tell Jesus when evening falls that it’s time to dismiss the crowds so they can go and but their own dinners. The crowds do not seem concerned about the physical hunger.

Perhaps the hunger Jesus was already filling, the hunger that initially drove them out of their familiar towns and into this deserted place, was deeper than any physical hunger pains could be. As followers of Christ, we are also the intended recipients of Jesus’ words. We are not to hoard the bread of life or the word of God, but instead we are to invite all we meet to come to the feast. We should not be concerned with scarcity. At the table of the Lord, we find abundance and more than enough to satisfy the hunger of all. Source: Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press 2020

Do you have questions about the Catholic faith? Send them to Carol Schubert for answers… How can the individual be integrated into society in such a way that he nevertheless can develop freely? The individual can develop freely in society if the “principle of subsidiarity” is observed.

In today’s readings both Isaiah and Jesus offer nourishment without cost or preconditions. Isaiah says, “Come to me without paying and without cost.” He also asked the basic questions, “What is truly of value, and how do you spend your resources?” Jesus likewise offers food for the journey and asks his disciples to give of themselves, to share what they have with those who are hungry. In both of these readings, the hunger was for the Word of God and the abundant blessing that it alone can give. God

provides for all his creation at all times with the abundance of life, life eternal. In order to receive this blessing, we must always be present for the offering of this food. In these days of uncertainty with a future we may fear, our strength comes from the belief and faith that God’s providing will guide us through...and perhaps God is asking us to see what is truly valuable in our lives during this time. Is it our possessions, or is it the relationships we have and the respect and love we show each other on a daily basis? In giving of ourselves with respect and love, we bring the peace and comfort of Jesus, which fulfills every hunger, to those we cherish.

Baptism Information: Baptisms are celebrated on the second & fourth Sunday of each month. A pre-Baptism program must be attended by the parents. Please call the rectory to register for a program. Marriage Information: Please call the rectory to make arrangements at least six months (a year is preferred) in advance of the wedding date. It is recommended you do not rent reception facilities until your wedding date is confirmed with the pastor. Your preferred wedding date may be unavailable, and we do not want you to lose your deposit with the reception venue. Parish Registration: New families are welcome and are asked to register at the rectory. Also, previously registered parishioners are asked to notify us of any address changes. Emergency Sick or Anointing Calls: Please notify us immediately of any serious illness in your family. If you have a hospitalized loved one who would like a visit, please call the rectory with contact information since the hospitals and hospices no longer notify parishes. Please do not wait until the last minute to have someone anointed. There are always accidents/emergencies, but sometimes there is less panic when the anointing can be done prior to someone passing.

We now have available low-gluten hosts which make it possible for people who have celiac disease or allergies to wheat or gluten to be able to receive communion. If you have celiac disease or an allergy to wheat or gluten, please let us know before Mass so that arrangements can be made

for you to be able to receive communion at Mass.
