St. Paul Lutheran & Shared Lutheran Ministry
JOINT DINNER AND MUSIC Saturday, July 6
Sons of Hermann Hall 5830 St Hwy 159
Proceeds will benefit Lutherhill Ministries
One of the things I’ve noticed in the church is that there is a tension that exists between two ways of thinking about—dare I say it—money. The tension is this: should the church have a “savings account?” To be clear, this tension is not one that is unique to St. Paul, Lutheran churches, or honestly to organizations in general.
On the one hand, people with a financial background tend to think this is a good idea. It’s smart in our personal finances as well as in our church. What if something happened and we needed to replace the roof? What if something else happened and we needed money to fix it? I wonder, how much is enough? How much is too much?
On the other hand, many believe that it’s not the church's place to have a “stockpile” of money. What we have been given is a gift and a resource for ministry and we should use it. I wonder, if we are going to use that “stockpile,” what would we use it on? What is an appropriate use?
There are a great many people who fall in the in-between space. So, for a moment, let's set these two tensions aside. Are there ministries to which God is calling us? If so, what are they?
One thing is sure: if God is calling us into ministry—and I believe that God IS—God will also provide resources (both physical and monetary) to do that ministry. The questions we should be wrestling with are 1) What is our passion? 2) What are our gifts? 3) What are the resources God has given us to carry out that ministry?
When we ask God to give us today our daily bread, we ask God to provide for us what we need, not only to survive, but to THRIVE: to be and do what God has called us to be, both as individuals and as the Body of Christ in this community and beyond.
This September will mark the 5th anniversary of you calling me here to be your pastor; a time that I have cherished and continue to cherish. Let’s mark this time together by helping each other to pray and dream about how is God is using this relationship, and indeed all the resources God has given us to BE the church—the hands, feet, and voice of God .
That’s what I see!
Pastor Candy
We would like to express our gratitude to the people of St. Paul Lutheran La Grange for your love and support for the
Stroll, Roll ‘n’ Run. We made our goal and then some; matter of fact, a total of $302,784.00 over the ten years to
support research for ALS. In addition, we have given monetary support for patients with ALS in our immediate area.
This year paying over $4,000.00 for a funeral of one of ours who died without money as ALS expenses took all her
resources. ALS is also a disease that is relentless.
Please accept our heartfelt Thank You for all the support. To those who sponsored our events, those who worked our
events, those who gave to the silent auctions and drawings, and those who came. In addition, the Quilt, made for
this year’s event and those who bought tickets: it put us over the top! To Mrs. Betty Schmidt who made the quilt:
gratitude.
In addition gratitude for the Fishers of Men, Friends in Faith, and others from St. Paul Lutheran Church and the whole
community in and around La Grange. We could not have accomplished this without your support. Your generosity
has pushed the needle forward to rid the world of ALS and we thank you.
Eternally grateful, Pastor Bill and Renee Hassel

Chillin’ with Caleb
Hey there St. Paul, It’s our summer newsletter and I have a busy summer coming up to fill you in on, but before that, I need to recap May. We saw LYO conclude for the school year on May 15
th with a
Color Fight, which is not a violent event despite what it sounds like. Rather it was a devotion involving copious amounts of dyed cornstarch that left us all looking very colorful. You can see the picture below to get a good sense of what I’m talking about. Senior Sunday was May 12
th, where we honored
7 of our graduating seniors in person during Sunday Service. Additionally, we presented them with quilts that were handmade by our Quilters group. Sunday School was held on the 12
th and 19
th, but
will take a hiatus over the summer. We will resume regular classes in September. Finally, Registration for VBS Day Camp is in full swing. We still have plenty of room so be sure to sign up if you haven’t done so already.
Coming up this summer, we will welcome over 60 kids to our church for our VBS Day Camp with Lutherhill Ministries. Registration forms are available now, both in the church office and an online sign up form can be found on the church website and Facebook page. The LYO will embark on a 10 day journey to Junction, Utah and back on July 19
th - 28
th. Our group of 26 kids, 4 Jr. Sponsors, and 8
Sponsors are extremely excited for this trip and as we look towards the end of July with anticipation, we again want to thank the congregation for their support in our endeavors throughout the year and support for this trip.
In the last newsletter, I mentioned that I was running for Synod Council at Synod Assembly this year. I am happy to announce that I was elected to Synod Council for a three year term representing Young Adults and St. Paul alike. I very much am looking forward to representing this congregation and community at the synod level. And my first opportunity to do so will come this August, as I have also accepted a spot on the Synod’s delegation to churchwide assembly in Milwaukee from August 5
th - 10
th. Finally, after everything above that I've listed is done, I will be taking a week off to rest
during the week of August 11-16th. If anyone needs to reach me, please let the office know.
Otherwise I will be away from my phone and emails.
Caleb can be reached in person in the office Tuesday through Friday, via email at [email protected], or via his cell phone at (512) 944-7859.

The Altar Guild meets quarterly. Their next meet Tuesday, June 11, 4 p.m. in the Friendship Room. The Altar Guild always welcomes new members. Please let the office know if you are interested in this ministry.
What a wonderful church and church staff you have! Last week, my husband and I were on the highway travelling from Brownsville, Texas to Oklahoma when our cell phones alerted us to take cover due to storms in your area. Thankfully we made it to your town and I happened to notice the church. Having lived all my many years on Oklahoma, I know what to do when a storm is coming - fund a church! Thank you, Candis, Caleb and Melinda for allowing us to take shelter in your beautiful house of worship. We hope that those in your community that were affected by the storm that day are now doing well but feel that the people of La Grange will always step up to take care of one another.
Bev & Dennis Crowe Perry, Oklahoma
P.S. Suffice it to say, our visit while taking cover was a highlight. Thanks for unlocking the doors!!!
