Evangelii Gaudium

272. Loving others is a spiritual force drawing us to union with

God; indeed, one who does not love others “walks in the dark-

ness” (1 Jn 2:11), “remains in death” (1 Jn 3:14) and “does not

know God” (1 Jn 4:8). Benedict XVI has said that “closing our

eyes to our neighbour also blinds us to God”,[209] and that love

is, in the end, the only light which “can always illuminate a

world grown dim and give us the courage needed to keep living

and working”.[210] When we live out a spirituality of drawing

nearer to others and seeking their welfare, our hearts are opened

wide to the Lord’s greatest and most beautiful gifts. Whenever

we encounter another person in love, we learn something new

about God. Whenever our eyes are opened to acknowledge the

other, we grow in the light of faith and knowledge of God. If we

want to advance in the spiritual life, then, we must constantly be

missionaries. The work of evangelization enriches the mind and

the heart; it opens up spiritual horizons; it makes us more and

more sensitive to the workings of the Holy Spirit, and it takes us

beyond our limited spiritual constructs. A committed missionary

knows the joy of being a spring which spills over and refreshes

others. Only the person who feels happiness in seeking the good

of others, in desiring their happiness, can be a missionary. This

openness of the heart is a source of joy, since “it is more blessed

to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). We do not live better when

we flee, hide, refuse to share, stop giving and lock ourselves up

in own comforts. Such a life is nothing less than slow suicide.

Christmas “Adornaments”

We at St. Paul are a family with roots from all over the world, and we would like to express our grati-tude for our origins in the small way: This Christmas season, we have placed a large tree in our Gathering Space, and we invite you to decorate this tree with orna-

ments from your country or place of origin, or simply an ornament that means something to you personally. Please feel free to hang your ornaments at any time. You may also drop them off in a basket available near the church office and we’ll be happy to put them up for you!

Shop & Support SVdP! The connection between shopping and supporting St. Vincent de Paul is the Kroger Community Rewards Program. If you are a Kroger loyalty card shopper, you can sign up for t h i s p r o g r a m a t www.krogercommunityrewards.com

and designate Society of St. Vincent de Paul Bloom-ington, IN as your charity. Kroger will track your pur-chases (excluding alcohol, tobacco and gasoline) with every dollar counting as one vote for your favorite charity. Each quarter Kroger totals up all dollars spent by all members of the community rewards pro-gram and distributes money proportionately to the participating nonprofits. Participation in this program does not subtract value from your Kroger gas points or other discounts. There is no simpler, easier way to help the poor in our community. Please sign up and know that when you buy groceries, you are helping SVdP help the poor in our community. Already signed up? Each year your signature has to be renewed, so please sign up again for the coming calendar year.

SVdP Calling for Help! One very important ministry of SVdP is the distribution of gently-used furniture to people in need in Monroe County. A small army of dedicated volunteers literally distributes hundreds of pieces of furniture on Saturday mornings. The smooth distribution of furniture relies on furniture phone volunteers. They receive calls from donors of used furniture and they set up appoint-ments for home visitors to assess clients’ furniture needs. SVdP is in need of more phone volunteers. Would you be able to volunteer 2 hours per week for this ministry? After brief initial training, you could do this ministry from your home. If you would like more information about SVdP, please contact Ron Kofmehl at 812-336-4433.
