From time to time I like to recommend books and as we begin a new calendar year, it seems to be a good time to do so again. During my homily on the Feast of Mary, Mother of God, I referenced a book by Brant Pitre — “Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary: Unveiling the Mother of the Messiah.” This is one of the latest of Pitre’s books which open up the Bible for us in a new and illuminating manner.

Brant Pitre is a scripture scholar and professor of Sacred Scripture at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana. He received his PhD in New Testament and ancient Judaism from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. He is the author of numerous books on Sacred Scripture and related topics. Although a first rate scholar, he writes in an easily approachable and indeed readable style which is marked both by an informed scholarship and a deep faith devoid of the

skepticism that infects so much of contemporary study of the Sacred Scriptures.

In addition to the aforementioned “Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary,” I would like to particularly recommend “Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist,” and “The Case for Jesus.” Dr. Pitre does not seek to deconstruct the Bible but rather opens it up. Rather than sowing seeds of doubt he deepens our faith by deepening our understanding of Sacred Scriptures.

In “The Case for Jesus” Dr. Pitre runs right in the face of so much Scripture study which questions the historical Jesus. Pitre responds to such doubts by both a careful reading of the Scriptures themselves as well as references to outside historical evidence. In all three of these books he firmly roots Jesus and Mary within the tradition of ancient Judaism, demonstrating time and again how the New Testament is not only rooted in the prophecies of the Old Testament but also how the New Testament fulfills the Old Testament. For anyone who wishes to deepen their faith by deepening their understanding of the Bible, these books are a must.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BAD WEATHER/CHURCH CLOSINGS

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Bad Weather/Church Closings -- If it’s slippery and dan-gerous, or if there’s an abundance of snow, USE COM-MON SENSE. Don’t try to come to Mass. If the Fairfax County Schools system delays or cancels school due to weather, there will be no 8:30 a.m. Mass. Fairfax County Schools, for congruous purposes, is simply an efficient means to follow. If the U.S. Government shuts down be-cause of bad weather, we’ll do our best to maintain the Noon schedule because snow removal work should be well underway by that time – but there are no guarantees. For the safety of those shoveling and plowing the snow, gates will be closed and the entrances will be blocked by cones. (Please do not drive around the cones.) You can receive email notices -- from Fairfax County Schools by signing up via this link: https://publ ic .govdel ivery .com/accounts /VAEDUFCPS/subscriber/new (or use the internet search engine: “Fairfax County Schools closings”). U.S. Government closings be-cause of the weather, of course, are pretty big deals and news is easily accessible from television reports.
