BALANCE Today’s scriptures emphasize the fundamental link between love of God and love of our neighbors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should com-pel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn’t always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are oppressed. Today Jesus re-minds us of the necessity for both in the life of faith. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This week we have in All Souls’ Day a commemoration that is linked to the Halloween customs. The big-spending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thurs-day’s grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan su-perstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and re-member dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The “Day of the Dead” is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life’s sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from August to synchronize it with the Christian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elabo-rate skeleton outfits. The devout spend hours in the cemetery, and there is a lively sense of the communion of saints, the living and the dead. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN We thank all who have made pledges to our Capital Campaign. We are seeking to close a 1.2 million gap by November 1st. We have so many parishioners at St. Matthew that if everyone would make a pledge we would be able to meet this funding gap. If you have not yet donated, please consider doing so; en-velopes are located in the main foyers of the church. Contact Nanette Dion at (210) 478-5015 for more information.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE Installation of the force main, lift station, and other utility lines will continue this next week. The start of drilling and pouring of piers for the foundation was delayed from October 16 to Octo-ber 26th due to delays in getting the equipment moved from Houston. The next few weeks will continue be devoted to utility work and pouring of foundation piers. Though progress appears to be slow due to hidden underground work, the project is essentially on schedule for completion in late August to early September, 2018. Remember that additional parking is available at the commercial parking area on Oakgate Drive. Use of this area will make the closer spaces availa-ble for those who cannot walk that distance. Help your fellow parishioners by taking advantage of this area. Cross only at the intersection with traffic guards. Updated drawings and time lapse videos will be updated more rapidly as construction progresses. The latest time lapse videos run through October 13th. These can be seen at

CRY ROOM ETIQUETTE As you know, our parish has one cry room and a bride’s room that is open at some Masses to func-tion as an additional cry room. The primary pur-pose of the cry room is for parents with infants. At some Masses there are adults without infants at-tending. At other times, there are older children who are talking or playing during the Mass. Please remember to leave the space for parents with infants and to be attentive to the Mass, seek-ing to keep the same spirit of reverence found in the main body of the church as in the cry room.

MASS REMEMBRANCES FOR 2018 We begin taking requests for 2018 Mass Remem-brances on

Thursday, October 26 at 8:30 a.m. The policy followed is shown below so that we can accommodate as many of our parish family as pos-sible. According to Canon Law, a priest can accept only ONE MASS STIPEND per day. If there are multiple intentions for a particular Mass, the addi-tional stipend is donated to the parish. This is the Mass Remembrance policy for St. Matthew. Specific Masses will be designated monthly for:

Living and deceased members of the parish; Specific intentions requested by organizations;

Special request of all parishioners; We will accept requests on Wednesday thru Fridays

8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you mail your requests for Mass Remembrances, we cannot guarantee the dates you request but will give you the first available. In order to accommodate as many of our parishioners as possible, and to allow the availability for emergencies we must limit the number of Masses you request to one every other month (or 6 a year) (Maximum 2 of which could be Sunday Masses, only if available.) Thank you for helping us provide an opportunity for all our parishion-ers to schedule Masses.

NOW AND AT THE HOUR OF MY DEATH St. Matthew Consolation Ministry will again pre-sent this two part seminar that will focus on making your own funeral and liturgy arrange-ments as one last thoughtful gift you can give your loved ones who will be left behind. Looking ahead and making your own funeral arrangements will enable you to make a state-ment of your values and the meaning you find in life and death. The two part seminar will be held on two consecutive Saturday mornings, October 21 and October 28, 2017. The meetings will be held in the Parish Hall, and will begin promptly at 8:30 and will end by noon. Presenters are Bernard Zarazua and Bruce A. Orey of St. Mat-thew Consolation Ministry. WELCOME TO OUR PARISH BOOKLET Attention parishioners and visitors: Father Dennis, our priests, and the Parish Pastoral Council are so excited to share with you our "Welcome To Our Church" booklets that are now found in the pews. The welcome booklet explains some important as-pects of our Catholic faith as handed down to us by Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Find out what is in our church buildings, and learn the roles of the clergy and laypeople who participate in the Mass. Flip this booklet over for a guide to Mass responses and prayers, along with a commentary or explanation of what is happening. We invite you to participate in the responses during Mass. We expect that due to the wealth of information con-tained in this booklet, many of you might want your own copy. We are taking individual orders...$2 per copy. To order: contact Danny Padron at: [email protected]. Thank you!

PRAYER FOR SOULS Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, remembering the promise of the Resurrection, I humbly and sincerely offer these prayers and Masses for (Mention your intentions here...) and all the departed. With joy, I thank You for what we shared in this earthly life. With hope, I pray this offering will help them on their journey to the fullness of life and hap-piness with You in Heaven. Purify them from all that is not holy so they may dwell in

the mystery of Your perfect love forever. With blessed anticipation, I look forward to the coming age, when, with Your grace, I shall be united with them again in Paradise. Say 1 of each prayer... Hail Mary... Glory Be... May the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
