We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land that makes up our school community, the Wianamatta people from Darug Country.

We also pay our respects to Elders past, present and future and extend our respects to all First Nation Peoples as well as everyone who visits our school.

Principal’s Insights

Welcome to the first edition of South Creek for 2021. I would like to start

by thanking Kerri-Anne Brown and her student publication team for all

their efforts in putting together “South Creek” to provide an informative

summary of each term at our school but to also provide a valuable

resource for our archives. The St Marys community along with St Marys

Senior High School has a proud history and this publication will play a

part in ensuring that history is shared.

I would like to welcome our new cohort of students – the HSC Class of

2022 to St Marys Senior High School. You are nearing the end of your first term in what for

many of you is a totally different environment and experience from your previous schooling.

There is a common focus on high expectations by all members of our community. The staff at

St Marys Senior High School are exceptional; they know their students, they know the

curriculum and they know how best to prepare students for the challenges of the Higher School

Certificate.

Whilst Year 11 are just starting, for Year 12 it feels like the previous year has flown and by the

time you receive this publication you will have approximately 100 days left of school before you

commence your Higher School Certificate examinations. Over the next two terms there will be

lots of information available to you regarding your transition from school. Please ensure you

keep up to date through our communication platforms and through your Personal Mentor.

We continue to live under COVID -19 restrictions but have seen an easing of these restrictions

with excursions, inter-school and Sydney West Sport returning. This has provided much

needed extra-curricular opportunities for students. As the year progresses, we hope to see

further easing of these restrictions to allow our whole school events to continue in what may

be described as a normal way.

I hope you enjoy this edition of South Creek as you explore the achievements of our students

academically, on the sporting field, in the performing arts as well as the broader contributions

they make to support the wider community through fundraising and raising awareness of

important social issues. I am proud of the efforts of all our students and the staff at St Marys

Senior High School and invite you to enjoy the first edition of South Creek for 2021.

Lions Youth of the Year

The Lions Youth of the Year Program is designed to

foster, encourage and develop leadership qualities of

young people. The competition is held annually and

is comprised of two events. The first event is an

interview where students are asked to answer

questions about themselves and current events. The

second event is a public speaking evening which I

was lucky enough to be able to attend. The public

speaking portion of the competition requires students

to answer two impromptu questions, as well as

presenting a two-minute speech on a topic of their

choice.

This year, St Marys Senior High School had two students

compete on Tuesday 23 February. Anna Moore (Year

12) and Olivia Auddino (Year 11) were selected to

represent the school at the event, and both students did

extraordinarily well. Both students had strong responses

to the impromptu questions and delivered excellent and

thought-provoking speeches on misogyny in Australian

politics and the way society talks about and views

individuals with Autism. Anna and Olivia represented

themselves, their families and the school strongly and

should be very proud of themselves. Anna’s exceptional

public speaking abilities, combined with her outstanding

interview skills, saw her win the local event.

Anna then went on to compete in the 2021 Regional Lions Youth of the Year Competition on

Sunday 7 March, winning the public speaking component of the event when she spoke

eloquently about the difficulties women face across our society.

Both young women are to be congratulated on all they have achieved throughout the different

elements of the competition.

International Women’s Day

This year, our school was selected from

many applications from public schools across

Western Sydney to represent the Department

of Education at The Paul Ramsay Foundation

dinner for International Women’s Day.

The event involved a panel of distinguished

speakers who discussed a range of issues

confronting our community, followed by the

opportunity to talk one-to-one with the

distinguished guests at the function.

Our school captains, Chloe Nolasco and

Alice Chitos were energised and inspired by

the women they met and the ideas explored

at the event - and we will again apply to

attend in 2022!

Harmony Week

Harmony Week is a time to celebrate

multiculturalism and the successful integration

of migrants into our community. It is about

respect, inclusiveness and belonging for all

Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic

backgrounds, united by a core set of Australian

values.

The activities organised by the SRC for the week included a different activity for each day.

Monday 15 March – A chalk drawing competition was

held under and around the COLA. We were very

impressed by the art works and had a difficult time

awarding the winner. The winning entry is pictured on

the right by Verdah Ahmad, Sameeksha Patro,

Ayesha Mazhar and Areeba Khalif.

Tuesday 16 March – This saw a basketball

tournament, called the Harmony Day

Cluster Cup, organised by some of the SRC

Team. The closely fought competition was

won by Cluster 2. The team is shown below

– Kristian Cantre, Allen Lee, Marcus

Mansfield, Benji Joseph, Jordan Macasero,

Josh Viernes and Ethan Abanico.

Wednesday 17 March – Unfortunately the lunchtime concert under the COLA was cancelled

due to wet weather.

FOCUS ON MUSIC AND SOIREE in the eyes of YEAR 11 ENTERTAINMENT

By: Centrum Co-Production and G.O.A.T Productions

One thing we all agree with is that COVID-19 has made everyone one of us reassess how

education is delivered, received and how different our lives have become. We now come in,

sanitize our hands, wipe down the table, wash our hands frequently, mask up, repeat!!!

Technology become our friend and tool to learn, collaborate and communicate – not just at

school but also with loved ones. Seeing people in person, is not the IN THING.

Everyone one of us will have stories to tell – uploading, downloading, how to handle paper,

emails, zoom meetings, team meetings, hangouts – we have done it all in one year. Streaming

was always available, but soon became the necessity and the NORM.

However, in the performing arts, we experienced something that is so much more, that words

don’t do justice. As Musicians, we practice, rehearse, collaborate and perform. What we are

performing is only a minor part of what we do. Ultimately, we entertain the audience. The

audience will tell us, whether they liked what we did, how we did it and what we should do from

then. In the COVID-Life, we had to adapt - the alternative – the live stream! But it’s not the

same. To like to have an audience right in front of you, to hear their applauses, the cheer, the

commentary in a real time situation is so different to performing in front of cameras –

‘remember, when you get the cue, stay silent until the light goes on, then start’.

Live performance is SO MUCH MORE. The restrictions were for our physical health and it is

important – we trust it, we enforce it. But it was never the same. In real performance, the

frowns turn into a smile, the anxiety turns into adrenalin and that’s the way it should be. We

are entertainers, whether it is a sing-a-long, or a dramatic classical piano solo, or a theatrical

opportunity in story-telling. We are so thankful to SMSHS and the senior executive for their

support of the return of live performance. Yes, there were strict regulations, calculations of

how many people per square meter and which formula to use to ensuring physical distancing

and the QR code sign in and logs. It was all worth it – the opportunity to finally have a live

audience and speak to people after the performances – it’s a bright light at the end of a long

tunnel.

Page 10: St Marys Senior High School Magazine

10 Mente Manuque – With mind and hand

The Year 11 entertainment team, Centrum Co-Production was involved in the music events

of Week 8; Focus On Music (1 & 2) and Welcome to SMSHS Soiree. We, as a team,

experienced extended hours of work placement during and after school hours to set up and

prepare for the performances. These events were held on the 15th of March to the 19th of

March and on the school grounds of St Marys Senior High School in the MPC, while observing

strict COVID Safe Protocols. Our team is very flexible when we get given instructions or

corrections when it comes to a live production. During the bump in and bump out we worked

in collaboration with the Year 12 Entertainment company of G.O.A.T Productions, where they

helped us get a better understanding of the station we were assigned to. All along with the

bump in and bump out, each member learnt new skills including time management, industry

jargon, working collaboratively as a team, listening to each other's ideas, asking questions,

observing each station, jumping into a station where an operator was on other duties. Within

these live productions, mistakes occurred but we just continued with the show, like the phrase

“the show must go on.” By the end of the week, we were pretty tired but satisfied with the whole

entire experience.

“Focus On Music” truly highlighted the power music has to unify and strengthen individuals.

It was a display of all the connections we formed through the various collaborations we did

throughout Year 11 and Year 12. It was ultimately a testament to the hard work put in by all of

us to grow and become better musicians. Many of us got to appreciate our own as well as other

people’s journeys, often comparing Focus, to our Year 11 Soiree, which was our first ever

showcase at St Marys Senior High. We saw the immense progress that each of us made not

just technically but also in confidence. I am very blessed and grateful to have been part of such

a wonderful experience.

Art Express 2021

On Tuesday the 16th of March, St Marys Senior visual arts students were given the opportunity

to go on an insightful excursion to the Armory Gallery and Art Gallery of NSW to view the

travelling Art Express Exhibition 2021. Among all the incredible, expressive bodies of work

across both galleries; ‘Threads of Connection’, was the main running curatorial theme for the

exhibition at the Amory Gallery. Upon viewing the many incredible student artworks, students

were able to carefully consider and flesh out their own bodies of work in progress and physically

identify the ways in which material practice has a significant influence on the running concepts

of artworks; some reaching the end of their day with new materials, ideas and expressive forms.

All of the artworks revealed the hard work and the careful consideration of both material and

conceptual practice to express self or aspects of the world surrounding the artist. The

opportunity to view and interpret artworks created by students so close to our age was

inspirational both visually and conceptually. This also gave students in depth student insight

for their progressing HSC bodies of work. Thank you to the visual arts faculty and all the staff

who accompanied the cohort on the day and for making this excursion possible.

English Advanced ‘The Crucible’ Excursion

On Friday 19th of March 2021, Year 12 English Advanced students attended the Seymour

Centre, with surrounding high schools in our region, to watch a performance and in-depth

analysis of ‘The Crucible’, a text students study as part of the Advanced English Higher School

Certificate course.

Attending this excursion allowed us to have a deeper understanding and comprehension of the

play. We were taken through the play and its context analysis by director, Damien Ryan who

directed a previous, successful rendition of the text. Having his profound knowledge and

understanding broken down and explained to us was brilliant as we were given insight to the

play and the meanings within it. We were shown key scenes of the play live on stage, which

we broke down and analysed to receive deeper context.

Being able to attend this excursion and performance allowed the students to have a greater

appreciation for the text and have a greater background knowledge on the text at hand,

improving our understanding of the play, coming towards our HSC.

I would like to thank on behalf of the Year 12 English Advanced students, great thanks to our

teachers for giving us this opportunity to attend this excursion, it was an informative and worthy

excursion to take part in.

St Marys Students Test Their Linguistic Skills In Foreign Languages

In December 2020, students from St Marys Senior High School studying a language other than

English completed the Assessment of Language Competence (ALC) test administered by the

Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). These tests are an independent online

assessment that measures student performance in a language other than English. Students

participated in these tests in addition to their HSC studies and appreciated that it gave them a

great opportunity to gain a better understanding of their abilities in the language courses they

are studying for the Higher School Certificate.

There were two tests administered, one assessing student listening comprehension and the

other assessing reading comprehension skills. Students from the Spanish Beginners, Italian

Beginners, French Beginners and Japanese Beginners classes completed both of these

exams. A fantastic effort!

Bravo! / よくやったね (Yoku yattane!) / íBien hecho! to all students!

OPEN EVENING 2021

Open Evening on Friday 26 March was a huge success! It was a wonderful afternoon

celebrating the many opportunities and subjects available at St Marys Senior High School.

Potential students and family asked questions, toured different faculties and spoke to student

and staff representatives of subjects as we shared our love for the school, encouraging future

students to pursue the vast options at St Marys.

SRC members guided parents and prospective students through faculties at St Marys,

introducing them to the wide range of subjects available at the school. Especially exciting was

the textiles classrooms, where major works were proudly displayed. The art rooms exhibited

drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographs - demonstrating the talent of the people at

this school. These tangible displays of the passion and ability at SMSHS inspired potential

students, encouraging them to apply for a school bustling with creativity and a desire to

achieve.

The SRC did an impressive job of describing the success of other subjects, too. Although

English essays could not be displayed, the incredible teacher support at St Marys combined

with student passion was explained by SRC as parents and potential students were reassured

that St Marys is an environment where everyone is encouraged to learn and grow – not just

academically, but as individuals.

Parents and future students were introduced to the

unique adult learning environment of St Marys. Our

flexible uniform options and study periods wherein

students can leave student premises, reveal a school

where mutual respect between teacher and student

cultivates an atmosphere of ambition and excitement

for knowledge.

After finishing their tours, attendees of Open Evening

visited stalls where student representatives and

teachers talked about the subjects on offer at St Marys.

The CAPA stall was alive with music and chatter as we

explained the different ways a creative student can

pursue success at the school. Meanwhile, the science

faculty donned their lab coats as they talked about the

best subjects to pick according to prospective student’s

Page 17: St Marys Senior High School Magazine

17 Mente Manuque – With mind and hand

pre-existing skills. The HSIE faculty and student representatives discussed the merits of

studying Ancient History verses Modern History, while the Student Wellbeing stall explained

how they can support future students to achieve their best. These stalls were a great way for

prospective students to find out more about how they can pursue their interests through the

HSC, and how St Marys is uniquely equipped to support them in this journey.

Despite COVID regulations, Open Evening was a hugely enjoyable event. Thank you to all of

the organisers who negotiated COVID circumstances to equip future students with the

knowledge to make decisions for their senior schooling. Thank you to the teachers for staying

back into their evening at school to support the event and to the SRC and student subject

representatives for their tours, knowledge and time.

Excitement for the opportunities and events at St Marys Senior High School was infectious

during Open Evening. As teachers and students explained their love for this school, they

demonstrated that what makes St Marys special is not just subjects and results, but the people

whose passions contribute to the thriving environment at this school.

SPORTS WRAP UP

With the easing of many COVID-19 restrictions, sport has returned to St Marys Senior High

School. We are so happy about this and obviously so are our students who have been

representing the school, zone and region with great enthusiasm, spirit and sportsmanship.

In Term 1 we have competed in Werrington Zone Gala Days, participated in the Sydney

West Knockout Competition, held our annual swimming carnival and broken records at the

Werrington Zone Swimming Carnival. Here are a few highlights.

SMSHS Swimming Carnival

Planning began in 2020 for our swimming carnival and unfortunately there were restrictions

in place on the number of people that could enter Ripples Pool. We had hoped that when

we returned in 2021 those restrictions would have been lifted in time for our carnival,

however, that was not to be and we ran a competitor only event.

It was a great day and the standard of swimming was outstanding with many records broken.
