Comments from Deacon Dale Brown We enter this Gospel scene midstream. Jesus is giving

his Twelve Apostles instructions for their first

missionary journey. The most striking thing about these

instructions is the warning. In this passage, Jesus tells

them three times not to be afraid - three times! He

wouldn't say it if they didn't need to hear it. But why

would they need to hear it? Because as they go out in

Christ's name to spread the Gospel in word and deed,

they are going to run into serious difficulties. Jesus is

warning his Apostles that they will meet up with

persecution and hardship, just as he will, in a dramatic

way, during his Passion. He is warning them that their

Christian mission will demand heroic courage,

perseverance, and fidelity as they constantly face

suffering, mockery, and opposition. They are going to

run into people who will want to destroy them, humiliate

them, and even kill them, just because they bear Christ's

name and are trying to spread Christ's message. Those

same warnings apply to us too. Being a Christian is not

like joining a tennis club. There is a spiritual battle going

on in this fallen world. Whenever we are truly following

Jesus and building up his Kingdom, the powers of

darkness, the devil and his minions, don't like it. They

try to make it hard for us, just as they made it hard for

the Apostles. The history of the Church proves that this

battle is real, not just symbolic, starting with the

Apostles themselves. Every one of Jesus' first Apostles

died a martyr's death - except St John the Evangelist,

who miraculously survived being boiled in oil. Peter was

crucified upside down in Rome. James the Greater was

beheaded in Jerusalem. Andrew was crucified on a cross

in the shape of an X. Bartholomew was skinned alive

and crucified in Armenia. Philip was stoned and then

crucified in Turkey. Thomas was speared to death in

India. James the Lesser was hurled from the city walls of

Jerusalem and beaten to death with stones and clubs.

Jude was shot to death by arrows, in Persia, while tied to

a cross. Matthew was burned to death in Afghanistan

[Note: the mode and exact location of his martyrdom are

disputed by historians, but not the fact.] Simon the

Zealot was sawed to pieces in the Kingdom of Georgia.

These are our older brothers in the faith. They teach us

that being a Christian is demanding; it takes courage; it

stirs up opposition. They followed in Jesus’ footsteps,

and blazed the trail for us to do the same.

Prayers & Congratulations!

June 21 – FATHER’S DAY –

First celebrated in in the YMCA in Spokane, WA in 1910 by

Sonora Smart Dodd, who was from Arkansas.

Her father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War Veteran,

and a single father of 6 children.

In 1972, President Woodrow Wilson, declared the 3rd Sunday

of June an official national holiday.

June 22 - Feast Day

St. Thomas More & St. John Fisher

St. Thomas More, English lawyer, author, statesman & martyr

(1478-1535)

St. John Fisher, Bishop, Cardinal, theologian, and martyr

(1469-1535) -

Saints More and Fisher are well-known for opposing Eng-

land’s King Henry VIII’s divorce.

It was their refusal to sign an oath of supremacy that led them

to be executed. King Henry VIII claimed to be the Head of

the Church of England asserting sovereign power over Eng-

lish Christians. Neither Fisher nor More could abide this

claim and their steadfastness to their consciences put them in

conflict with the King.

They were convicted of treason and executed.

June 24 – The Nativity of St. John the Baptist -

One of the earliest feasts to be celebrated on a particular

day. June 24 was chosen to remind us that John was 6

months older than Jesus

Notable Quotable

To remember your father:

“They whom we love and lose are no longer where

they were before – they are now wherever we are.” ~ St. John Chrysostom

– Priest, Archbishop, Author & Preacher - 347-407 AD)

O Mary,

you always brighten our path as a sign of

salvation & of hope. We entrust ourselves to

you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross,

took part in Jesus’ pain while remaining

steadfast in faith.

O loving Mother,

you know what we need, & we are confident

you will provide for us as

at Cana in Galilee.

Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine Physician,

for those who have fallen ill,

for those who are vulnerable,

and for those who have died.

Intercede also for those charged with protecting the

health and safety of others and

for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure.

Help us, O Mother of Divine Love,

to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by

Jesus, who took upon himself our sufferings and carried our

sorrows, so as to lead us, through the Cross, to

the glory of the Resurrection.

Amen.

A Prayer for Protection in time of Pandemic

Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God. In

our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always from all

dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Amen.

Dear Father, we ask you to protect the little babies who are being knit together in their mothers’ wombs.

Comfort their mothers & fathers during the time they are growing & developing. Lord Jesus, give these smallest of

persons the strength to come into this world, to fully participate in your creation. Send your Holy Spirit to infuse their souls with love for you. After long, healthy, & loving lives, bring them safely home to your heavenly kingdom.

Amen.
