A VOLUNTEER’S PERSPECTIVE on THE CROSSROADS EASTER MEAL By Tish Lehman

When my children grew up and moved far

away, I decided to try volunteering at

Crossroads on Easter (my Jewish husband

has no problem spending Easter alone.)

The first year, I was responsible for

distributing the Easter baskets, which

turned out to be difficult, since I had to

turn down all the adults who wanted to

take them home instead of bringing their

children to the dinner. The happy kids

made up for the pain of having to say

“no.” Since then, I've done the early shift

(bagging carrot sticks before customers

arrived), and the late shift (background

work like pouring Vernors over ham or

washing dozens of big aluminum pans).

This is fun because of the camaraderie

with St. Mary's parishioners, but handing

out drinks to our customers was the most

fun because it involved both groups of

people. This year I tried something new,

wiping the tables, greeting people, and

making myself generally available to our

customers as they lined up to get the

food and either took it home or ate it

there. This turned out to be physically the

easiest job, and emotionally both the

hardest and most rewarding.

I am filled with admiration for the people

who organize and maintain this important

service year in and year out. The

Crossroads administrators have the

difficult job of taking a fresh set of

volunteers every week of the year,

training us quickly on how to satisfy the

important standards of hygiene and

quality necessary for giving food to the

public, and they do it with the friendly

firmness of every high-school principal.

The light of Christ shines most brightly

from their faces. God is truly working

through both the staff and the volunteers.

Best of all are the faces of those being

served. Everybody is different. Some

arrive beautifully dressed from church;

some in the jeans they slept in and

carrying bags of all their belongings. Some

happily thank us for feeding them, while

some stare in lonely solitude among the

crowd. Some greet old friends, laugh and

flirt; some avert their eyes. One teenage

girl goes around the table tucking away

the vegetables others didn't want (just as

in a school cafeteria, the ham and potato

salad are much more popular than the

veggies, and the candy is most popular of

all.) Every one of them has the face of the

Risen Christ. When I drag my exhausted

body home at the end of the day, I am

satisfied that I have observed this great

holiday in the best way.

Diocesan Services Appeal (DSA) Our DSA theme, “For Everything is From You, and What We Give

Is What We Have From You,” reminds us that we bring nothing

material into this world and we take nothing out of it. Everything

we have is a gift from God.

Our contributions to DSA allow our diocese to expand our efforts

of evangelization and social ministry well beyond what an

individual or a single parish could accomplish. The programs,

ministries and services funded by the DSA offer not only direct

assistance to individuals and families, but also to parishes and

schools as they carry out their missions in our 10 county diocese

and beyond.

Our PARISH GOAL OF $ 74,613 can be reached if each of us shares

a portion of the many blessings God has bestowed upon us.
