St. Mary of Vernon RCIA Please share this article with those in your life who might be considering the Catholic faith as the home for their relationship with God. Thoughts from a Presbyterian Pastor who converted to Catholicism:

“Faith alone” not accurate. I had had some questions about “salvation by faith alone” and how such a doctrine related to the demands of Jesus for holiness and the moral life. Many of the teachings of Jesus seemed to demand “works” for salvation. For example, the merciful actions caring for those who suffer revealed in the vision of the Last Judgment in Ma hew 25:31-46, the requirement that be-lievers forgive others in Ma hew 6:12, 14-15, the active care of the neighbor manifested by the Good Samaritan, Luke 10, or the explicit teaching of Romans 2 and 2 Cor. 5:10. I have since found nearly thirty different references to the need of works for salvation in the New Testament alone. Suffice it to say that my Protestant self-assuredness was shaken. To find on the one hand that this Protestant phrase, “salvation by faith alone,” was based on an interpolation by Luther into a text of the key word, “only”, and on the other to discover so many passages that explicitly stated that our salvation was dependent upon our works made possible in a state of grace, called into question the entire man-ner in which protestants dealt with faith and works.

Individuals who would like to know more about the Catholic Faith can connect with someone on our RCIA team for basic information or to set up an appointment to discuss specific questions or goals; contact Maureen Evers (847-362-1005 or [email protected]) or Mark Zwolski (847-644-7073 or [email protected]).

Memo from Father Joe: By way of background, a few weeks ago, I thought that it would be pastorally a good idea to host an

informal listening session opportunity for our parishioners in regard to the abuse crisis. Our pastoral associate facilitated the gathering. A small group of parishioners did come together. They shared their anger, upset and frustration about the revelations and extent of the sexual abuse crisis in Pennsylvania and beyond. They want-ed to do something concrete to state their concerns.

Following that, our Parish Pastoral Council, at our monthly meeting on September 24, expressed their own thoughts and concerns. They, too, wanted to do something concrete. They decided that sending a letter to our Archbishop would be a straightforward and positive action step. So, with the signatures of our 12 PPC members, as well as Maureen Evers, our pastoral staff liaison to the PPC, and my own, the following letter was sent:

Letter sent to our Archbishop by our Parish Pastoral Council

Dear Cardinal Cupich,

We fully join the increasing outcry and the vehement anger of both laity and clergy alike in recent

weeks. It is still hard to comprehend the recent and continued revelations of the extent of clergy sexual abuse and, even more so, the extensive coverup. As news sources report, sexual abuse is rampant in so many levels of society - within families, schools, sports and corporations. But church leadership absolutely must be held to a higher and more reliable standard.

We now face a critical issue of leadership in the Catholic Church. As one of our parishioners put it, “Our shepherds have become wolves. They have allowed predators to operate in positions of great authority to prey upon the flock”. The credibility of our leaders has been terribly damaged. It is our deepest hope that this credibility is not beyond repair. We must regain the trust that has been lost.

As Vatican II reminded us, we together are the living Church. Thus, we feel we also must speak out. We call upon you, our Archbishop, together with the majority of our bishops and priests, who are faithful servant leaders, to commit to fundamental reforms and renewal in the days and months ahead. This commit-ment cannot be and must not be only with more words. This commitment must include substantive actions that fundamentally reflect a true resolve.

The Church must come totally clean and be transparent. No matter the consequences, every diocese & local church must open and release all that has been hidden or covered up. Leaders who are re-sponsible must be held accountable.

There needs to be an authentic and independent review, with objective, lay participation being an integral part of this consultation and review.

The reform of the hierarchy is essential. A transparent process for selecting quality and faith-filled bishops in the future should be created – not only in the United States but around the world.

We totally appreciate that you, our Cardinal Archbishop, have stepped forward, willing to be a significant part of this worldwide endeavor to reform the Church in a substantive and permanent way. With strong ad-monition and firm backing, we ask that you truly be servant leader for this local church and the worldwide church as well.

In the name of the people of St. Mary of Vernon Parish, we send you this message both of challenge and of encouragement as sisters and brothers in the Lord.

Respectfully,

St. Mary of Vernon Parish Pastoral Council

Fourth in a series of what our Faith Community can do to minister to those with mental illness and their families.

People with mental illness and their families may feel isolated from their faith community and thus isolated from God. If someone feels rejected by church they feel rejected by God. Isolation is often caused by the stigma associated with hav-ing a mental illness. The fear of being judged as inadequate or weak willed, or the misperception that God is punishing them because they did something wrong, or the community’s misperception of what mental illness is and how it affects the individual and their families are powerful contributors to the isolation and loneliness that people feel. As a healing community we can support people with mental illness and their families with unconditional non-judgmental love in the following ways: increase our awareness of mental illness and where to get help; offer prayers and support for individuals and families who are affected by mental illness; serve on parish committees for outreach to individuals and families, get involved in peer to peer ministry; and work on the justice issues affecting mental health care.

Mondays for Mental Health Starting October 8

Learn more about mental health. What can we do to help family and friends who suffer with a mental illness? St. Mary of the Annunciation (SMOTA) and St. Mary of Vernon (SMOV) are partnering in a 5 part series of weekly information-al meetings. All the meetings are from 7:00 – 8:30 PM. The dates at St. Mary of Annunciation 22333 W. Erhart Road, Mundelein, Il 60060 are 10/8, 10/15 and 11/5. The meet-ing room is off the narthex in the new church. The new church is next to the large parking lot at the end of the drive-way. The dates at St. Mary of Vernon Parish Center 236 U.S. Highway 45, Indian Creek, Il 60061 are 10/22 and 10/29. Drive straight onto the parish grounds to the building at the far end of the driveway.

For more information, contact Deacon Al Sedivy (SMOTA) [email protected] or Deacon Jerry Nora (SMOV) [email protected].

Please join the SMV Book Club at 11:30 on Oct. 19 to discuss A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. We will be meeting at Oregano’s (119 W Gilmer Road, Hawthorn Woods) for lunch and book discussion.

…The gist of the story is that a semi-fictional novelist, name of Ruth, living on a remote island in British Columbia, discovers a Hello Kitty lunchbox washed up on the beach containing some letters, a watch and the diary of a troubled Japanese teenager. It’s thought that the box is part of the debris from the 2011 Japanese tsunami. The diary soon has Ruth desperate to find out the fate of the mysterious schoolgirl, named Nao.

This is a message-in-a-bottle story writ large. It’s also — and this is its greatest strength — a coming-of-age story. Too much in one book? Not really. Ozeki divides the narrative mainly between Ruth and Nao…alternately. There’s such a clear construction to the book that the reader feels in safe hands all the way through.

Ruth’s sections can become a bit tedious, whereas Nao’s diary is unfailingly vivid, dramatic, sassy and moving. Brought up in America, Nao’s Japanese father loses his job in Silicon Valley and she’s taken to Tokyo. The bullying she endures at school is close to torture. Her father keeps trying to commit suicide. …Emotional and spiritual rescue for Nao comes from spending time in her 104-year-old great-grandmother Tiko’s temple where she learns about the lives of her ances-tors, including an uncle who was a kamikaze pilot. (It’s his watch and letters in the Hello Kitty lunchbox.)

…There’s warmth, wit and wisdom within the book…The Spectator

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION They say that it is not so much that Columbus discovered America, but rather that after he arrived, the new world “stayed discovered.” The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other “discoverers” lacked. One of the oft-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Naviga-tor, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to “the Isle of the Blessed” in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adven-tures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in sum-mer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyp-tian monks sought to live in the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. Five centuries after Brendan, other Irish monks may have visited here as a refuge from Viking terror. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Unemployment Line Reasons Recruiters Will Dismiss Your Resume (Part 2 of 2) 4. It has the wrong tone Some candidates are giving great thought to the editing of their resume – checking for typos, verb tenses, and verbiage – but not considering tone. Experts recommend reading the resume

aloud keeping personal brand at the forefront of your consideration. ‘Does this resume reflect my val-ues and perspective? Is this how I want to come across to potential employers?’

5. It’s not ordered by level of relevance or impact In keeping with the theme of making it easy for hiring managers and recruiters, make sure you put the most important or relevant information at the top of your resume and throughout each position. Your resume should highlight your most prized accomplishments in the first bullets and day-to-day towards the bottom.” Structure the resume [from] greatest to least impactful for each position you held.

6. It doesn’t tell a story

If a recruiter looks at your resume and can’t tell what your career “story” is and generally where you’re hoping to go, that could lead to a “no.” No matter the level of the candidate, [from] someone just out of college or a very senior executive, it’s okay if someone works in various industries and jumps around a bit and gains different experiences. But at the end of the day, what is the common thread throughout this person’s career? Take some time to write a paragraph or two explaining your overall career arc. If it’s not clear to you, it certain won’t be clear to a recruiter who’s scanning your resume quickly.

The purpose of our Wellspring Employment Resource Community (WERC) ministry is to provide a safe and effec-tive forum for sharing work search tools and techniques which can enable unemployed, underemployed, and job-searching parishioners in their efforts to find meaningful and rewarding work.
