RCIA Update: Already thinking about Easter In our post-Christmas activity, our RCIA program continues to work with several individuals on their journey of faith – both in our Inquiry program and our Catechumenate program. Our Catechumen, Cindy, is working towards the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist this coming Easter. Along with her sponsor, Janet, Cindy will be engaged in new topics of discussion over the next few weeks including Christian Morality, Respect of Life, and Social Justice issues. A month from now, we’ll be talking about the Rite of Election which signals the weeks of final preparation leading up to Easter. At the same time, our Inquiry group continues to meet with individuals to address their questions and curiosity about the Catholic faith. Any non-Catholic wishing to learn more about the Catholic faith and the Catholic Church - now is the time to step for-ward - the time to connect with our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program is here. Anyone baptized Catholic but not having received the Sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation - it’s also the right time for you to get on board! Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings; if that doesn’t fit your Schedule, let’s talk anyway – we can help! At St. Mary of Vernon, the RCIA process is happening right now! Individuals who would like to know more can drop in on weekly open discussion meetings – currently held on Wednes-days at 7:30 PM in the Lower Level of the Rectory. Or to connect with someone on our team for basic information or to set up an appointment to discuss specific questions or goals, contact Maureen Evers (847-362-1005 or [email protected]) or Mark Zwolski (847-644-7073 or [email protected]).

PATRIOTIC ROSARY

MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 2018

7:00 PM IN THE CHAPEL

January 22nd is the 45th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion on demand in the United States; and the U.S. Bishops have designated this as a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Please join the SMV Knights of Columbus and Respect Life Committee on Monday, January 22nd, at 7:00 pm, as we pray the Patriotic Rosary.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Ordinary Time” began for us last week. On the old calendar, the feast of the Presentation, still more than a week away, was the last day of the Christmas season. Sadly, Bethlehem is hardly a place of peace on earth these days. The ancient Chris-tian community has been largely uprooted by political strife. The Church of the Nativity stands (barely) in remarkable disre-pair and disorder in Manger Square. The roof is crumbling, the major doorways are blocked, the wiring is faulty, and the wor-ship life is disrupted by quarrels among Eastern Christians. The church was founded by the Emperor Constantine in 325, destroyed in a Samaritan revolt in 539, and rebuilt by the Emperor Justinian. When the area came under Muslim control in 638, the holiness of the church was respected, and in re-turn Christians allowed Muslims to pray in the south aisle, a right still upheld. Earlier in that century, invading Persians were ordered to destroy all churches, but when they saw the magi carved over the doorway of the Church of the Nativity, they spared it out of respect for their ancestors who bore gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the same city. The Crusaders restored and redecorated the church by the twelfth century, and it is their plan that survives. Down a few stone steps is a stone grotto with a silver star marking the place of Christ’s birth: when the star was stolen in 1847 it triggered an interna-tional crisis that exploded into the Crimean War. Since 1852, the church has been shared by the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Churches. The Greeks are in charge of the grotto, but don’t enjoy the best of friendships with the Armenians. Catholics have the care of the Chap-el of the Manger, and avoid the squabbles by a separate entrance to the Franciscan monastery church of St. Catherine. Pray for peace in Bethlehem!

The Unemployment Line

Avoid these things in your 2018 Job Search: Being too narrow in your search – instead of focusing on a job title, search by industry Failing to research your target companies – well informed candidates always score ahead of others Not being your own champion – believe in yourself and show it! Forgetting to follow-up – always re-connect with your contacts after network meetings and

interviews The purpose of our Wellspring Employment Resource Community (WERC) ministry is to provide a safe and effec-tive forum for sharing work search tools and techniques which can enable unemployed, underemployed, and job-searching parishioners in their efforts to find meaningful and rewarding work. All are welcome – from recent gradu-ates looking for that first job to the individual looking to make a change in their career or current role to the seasoned job hunter. Upcoming “WERC” Events First meeting of 2018: Tomorrow - Monday, January 22nd at 7:30 PM –WERC Support Group

Our team of experienced job seekers and HR managers provides a range of services including job search strategy/planning, resume reviews, practice interviews, and networking recommendations.

Please Make Your Gift to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal

“Come, Follow Me”

During the last few weeks, many parish families received a letter from Cardinal Cupich requesting your participation by making a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. We ask that you respond as generously as possible.

This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Come, Follow Me.” We have all received God’s love. By financially supporting the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we help to extend God’s love to many, many others.

As you review the mailing from Cardinal Cupich, please note the ministries and services funded by the Appeal, includ-ing the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then please give generously. Note, when our parish reaches its goal of $64,415.00 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our Parish.

At St. Mary of Vernon, we rely on a portion of our rebate for normal operating expenses and to attend to various furnish-ings and maintenance items that need our attention after forty years.

APPROVAL FOR BEHAVIORAL HOSPITAL SMV Lake County United Team Supports Proposal

On Tuesday, January 9 the State Health Facilities and Services Review Board (HFSRB) held a hearing on U.S. HealthVest’s application to open a 146 bed behavioral hospital at the site of the former St. Therese Hospital. By a vote of 6 to 0 their request was approved. This for-profit hospital is stepping up to fill a need that no other hospital or health care provider in Lake County has the resources or interest to address. U.S. HealthVest will take over the existing 46 beds in Waukegan and add 100 more beds. It has publicly committed to turn no one away based on ability to pay. As in their other hospitals, they will implement a 15-minute intake process, so peo-ple will not have to wait for six hours in an emergency room. Police will thus be able to deliver troubled individuals to a professional facility and then head back out into the community to serve and protect..

PADS NEEDS YOU Our PADS Homeless Shelter finds itself in need of several volunteers to serve on the 1st shift from 6 PM until 8:30 PM (setting up PADS and making beds, preparing and serving supper), the 2nd shift from 8:30 PM until 11 PM (clean-up after supper, prepare lunches for the next day) and the 5th shift from 5:15 AM until 6:30 AM (prepares and serves breakfast, clean up kitchen and the sleeping area). This is a great opportunity to build the Kingdom on earth. Volunteers normally serve just 1 shift per month, though can work more if preferred. Ini-tial commitment is only for 3 or 4 shifts total, since we close at the end of April for the summer. If interested and you wish to answer the gospel call to shelter the homeless and feed the hungry, contact Jim at 847-726-1980 or Jane at 847-367-5676.

MINISTRY SHOWCASE—THE PARISH LIFE COMMISSION

The Parish Life Commission comprises a wide variety of ministries all touching the four pillars of the Catholic Church - faith, worship, morality & prayer. You can probably think of some of the big projects and groups that fall under the Par-ish Life Commission such as the Rummage Sale, the Men's Club, the Knights of Columbus, and our own website. Many of these efforts are well publicized in our bulletin and in Father Joe's announcements after mass. Also included within the arms of the Parish Life Commission are such important works as the Landscaping Ministry and our very own Scout-ing Troop. Gary Schiappacasse leads both of these ministries. Gary and his wife Diane came to our parish in 1980 and raised their son here. Gary himself was raised in a Catholic fam-ily and this instilled in him the faith and comfort of being active members of a parish community. As a teacher, Gary always has been involved with kids and so when he was approached by the Men's Club to start a Scouting Troop, he agreed that it would be beneficial to both the parish at large and the individual boys (And now girls, too!) to start a group here at our parish. Not only is it an excellent way for the youth of our parish to get to know each other and form strong bonds, but also the skills and experiences the boys learn through scouting could be productive for our parish. Gary remembers the day in 2002 when he saw Fr. Joe out front trying to do something with the horse pasture which is now our parking lot. There were a lot of invasive plants and underbrush covering the land - a lot of work to do! Gary saw an opportunity for his son to achieve his Eagle Scout Rank, and with that the Landscape Ministry was born. Scouting and Landscape work very well together; over the years the scouts have completed a number of projects for our parish such as the volleyball court and the walking paths. Many adult parishioners as well as the Alpha Omega teens have helped tame the wilds of St. Mary's property, too.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the most unusual Catholic churches in the world is in Amsterdam: Our Lord in the Attic, or as the locals say, “Ons Lieve Heer op Solder.” What looks like a beautiful narrow brick mansion alongside a canal is a clever disguise for a very well-preserved seventeenth-century home and a secret church. During the Reformation, the Netherlands was divided into Protestant Holland and the Spanish Netherlands, now known as Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers seized all the Catholic parishes in Holland and “de-Catholicized” them. New laws forbade the celebration of the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed “Old Church” by the new owners, and the dispossessed Catholics got to work “hiding” St. Nicholas Parish in the upper floors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the same thing, but this is the only hidden church that survives today. Sunday Mass is still celebrated here. It’s a beautiful hideaway, with nothing spared in regard to marble, gilding, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch painting. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in 1250, stands emptied of the statues and carvings of its Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is still painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of mind. Catholicism was at last tolerated in Holland after 1853, but in 1924 when the International Eucharistic Congress was held in Amsterdam, processions of Catholics were still forbidden in the streets. Today, Roman Catholics are about 19 percent of the population, and there’s no need for any of them to hide in the attic. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
