April 16, 2019 Dear Madeleine Parents, During Holy Week, we recognize the sacrifices of Lent are almost over. Therefore, we begin preparing our minds and hearts for the great feast of Easter and the personal joy it brings us. Easter is a time of openness. The heart of Mary and the disciples were opened to the unthinkable on that first Easter morning. Our Lord stands with arms wide open and beckons us to come and trust in Him! The month of May has been set aside to honor Mary, the mother of God, and her special role in God’s plan for us. The school community will celebrate the honorary Feast Day of our patron saint, St. Mary Magdalene on Wednesday, May 1. Please join us for a short prayer service at 8:10 a.m. in the back of school outside the fifth grade classrooms. I continue to be blessed to be part of this wonderful Madeleine community. What an exciting time of the year—celebrating the joy of Easter, students receiving the Sacraments of Initiation, First Communion, Teacher Appreciation Week, May Crowning, and the preparation of the end of year activities. There are four important feast days and celebrations during the month of May: St. Joseph the Worker on May 1; Our Lady of Fatima on May 13; The Ascension of the Lord on May 30; The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on May 31. OPENINGS IN PRIMARY GRADES School of the Madeleine still has openings for the 2019-2020 school year in first and second grade. If you know any families who are interested, please have them call the school office. Our best referrals have always come from our own families! STARTING DATE FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR The starting date for the 2019-2020 school year will be on Wednesday, August 21. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of that week will be minimum days with dismissals at noon. MADELEINE ATHLETIC PROGRAM GOLF TOURNAMENT The Madeleine Athletic Program’s 20th Annual Golf Tournament will be Friday, May 3, at Tecolote Canyon Golf Course. The athletic program maintains the grass field in the back of the main school building and supports after-school sports! We thank the golf committee members, Michelle and Chris Riley, for organizing this special event! Please contact Michelle Riley at [email protected] with questions. WCEA/WASC UPDATE The teachers and staff are still busy discussing and writing about different facets of the school. These sections form a self-study report to be presented to a team who will suggest an accreditation term for the school. Later in this newsletter, you will find Chapter 3B Defining the School’s Purpose and 3C Organization for Student Learning to Support High Achievement of All Students for your review and feedback. I invite you to share any comments, questions, or suggestions with me as you read these sections. Please keep us in your prayers as we continue our work.

STUDENTS RECEIVING SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION After Easter, Miller Lambert (2A) will receive his Sacraments of Initiation. Miller will be baptized, confirmed, and receive his First Eucharist all at the same Mass. In addition, Lissa Nunez (4B) will be receiving her First Eucharist in May. Diesel Dahlen (2A) made his Profession of Faith this spring and continues to receive his sacraments with his classmates. Congratulations to all of these students.

LOCKDOWN AND TEXT ALERT SYSTEM I want to thank everyone for your positive comments regarding our recent lockdown on Monday, April 8. The lockdown happened while first lunch students (K-4) were still out playing. I was very pleased with how well the students reacted and knew what to do even during lunchtime. The text alert company is still looking into why so many parents did not receive the alert even though they were registered and had not changed phone carriers. From what we have heard from parents, at least one of the phones registered on the account had AT&T as a carrier. The company is looking into this aspect. I’ll let you know as I find out more information. We will conduct a test of the alert system tomorrow, Wednesday, April 17, around 9:30 a.m.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, AUCTION Thank you again to our incredible co-chairs: Melisa McCloskey, Rorie Ring and Maria Ring. Lights, Camera, Auction was truly a night to remember! In addition, I want to thank all their committee chairs and workers for their dedication. I also want to thank all the generous sponsors for their support to help make the event more financially successful. I am so pleased to announce the net profit from the main event including the on-line auction is approximately $89,000 with another $14,150 raised for the Fund-A-Wish! The total brought in for the school was approximately $103,150. Our chairs and committee members did a lot of work to make this evening an amazing and profitable event. All Madeleine families profit from this fundraiser, as well as all fundraisers that are organized by our PSA. It really does take everyone working together to create an educational environment that enriches and challenges our students. COORDINATORS FOR NEXT YEAR’S JOG-A-THON AND MAIN EVENT I am delighted to announce that this year’s chairs, Mimi McGinty, Patty Roe, and Amy Pabarcus have agreed to chair next year’s jog-a-thon. I am looking forward to an exciting new theme and ideas! I am still looking for chairs for next year’s Main Event. If you are interested or know of some talented moms or dads, please let me know. Watch for an email coming out soon which will break down the fundraiser into smaller lead parts. With a team of leads behind the chairs, it has become a less daunting task. I am inviting this year’s chairs, leads, and committee members to a meeting on Tuesday, May 7, at 1:30 p.m. in the faculty room. I want to give you time to share how your involvement went this year. I’d also like to invite anyone who may want to know more about helping with this important fundraiser.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Congratulations to Josie Santos for receiving the Fontbonne Scholar Award and to Jordan Ho for receiving the Pilot Leadership Scholarship at Our Lady of Peace.

At Cathedral Catholic High School, Isabel Luskey received an Academic Scholarship for scoring in the top 1% on the High School Placement Test (HSPT). In addition, Malia Lima earned the Red & Gold Award for scoring in the top 10% on the HSPT. PROGRESS REPORTS FOR FOURTH QUARTER Progress reports for the final quarter of the school year will go out on Wednesday, April 17, for kindergarten through 8th grade. Sign and return this report promptly. Please feel free to schedule a conference with your child’s teacher whenever it is necessary. SAFETY AND THE SCHOOL GATE Please remember that you are to immediately report to the school’s office after you are buzzed onto the school property. In addition, please do not allow any other individuals onto the property with you. This will insure the safety of all our students! Please do not park on the street in front of the gate whether it is open or closed even if you are just running in to sign your child out early. This area needs to be accessible for emergency reasons. Also, often our maintenance employees need to get in or out of the school and are blocked by a vehicle. Thank you for your help with this! FUND-A-WISH AIR CONDITIONING DONORS

As part of the Main Event’s live auction, we hold a Fund-A-Wish for families who would like to donate to a specific need of the school. This year, these donations were allocated to our air conditioning fund. Our goal is $50,000. Before the Fund-A-Wish, we had raised $25, 538 with our earlier campaign. I am so grateful to our parents, grandparents, and friends who donated a total of $14,150 the evening of the Main Event. The generosity of these new donors brought our total raised to $39,688. We are still short by about $10,312. If you were unable to attend the Main Event, but would still like to donate, it is not too late. Any surplus over our goal will go toward purchasing new desktop computers for the computer lab. Here is a list of our generous donors from that evening:

SAINT AUGUSTINE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT We are very proud of our Boys’ Varsity and J.V. Basketball teams who took part in the Saint Augustine’s Basketball Tournament in March. There were 28 Varsity and 18 Junior Varsity teams who participated in this tournament.

We are proud of all our boys but especially of Zach Rivera (Varsity) and Alfonso Escalante (J.V.) for being selected to the All-County Saints Tournament Teams.

2019 CATHOLIC SCHOOL NIGHT Catholic School Night is back with the Padres on Friday, May 31. Please see a flyer later in the newsletter for discounted ticket information and other festivities planned for the night. IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS All students entering grade 7 are required to have a Tdap booster immunization. The proof of this booster must be given to our school office by Wednesday, May 1. This is a county health regulation (AB 354). No child may begin school without the Tdap booster immunization records on file. Thank you for your cooperation! MAY CROWNING Our annual Living Rosary and May Crowning in Mary’s honor will be Friday, May 17 at 10:45 a.m. in our parish church. The living rosary, led by our eighth and second grade students, will culminate with the crowning of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. Parents, grandparents, and relatives are encouraged to join us in this celebration honoring our Blessed Mother. Since this special day is dedicated to Mary, we ask that all Madeleine students wear their Sunday-best clothes. Girls should wear appropriate dresses or skirts with a blouse. No leggings are allowed! Parents, please watch the length of your daughter’s skirt or dress. Boys must wear dress shirts and slacks. No shorts are allowed on this day! This is a minimum day with dismissal at noon. There is a seating chart included in this newsletter so parents know where they may sit on this special day! Please join us as a community of faith in this holy celebration honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary. Families are asked to send flowers for this special day. Flowers will be collected from the children at the main gate as they come to school. Eighth grade parents will use these flowers to decorate the church.

FINAL TUITION PAYMENT, SERVICE POINTS, & PSA COMMITMENT Please remember that your family service points card was due April 1. You must have completed 20 service hours and turned in your orange card to the office. In addition, you should have fulfilled your $200 fundraiser commitment and $60 raffle ticket obligation. PSA commitment was also due on or before April 1. These dates are especially important for our eighth graders since they graduate May 31. Tuition accounts should have been paid in full the first week in April. Non-compliance in any area will prevent eighth graders from participating in graduation activities. Furthermore, returning students will be removed from the class roster and placed on a waiting list for next year! The resulting opening will allow the school to test and accept new students.

TUITION FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR The finance committee worked diligently with me to formulate a new budget for the coming school year. As always, we are committed to keeping tuition rates down and providing a quality academic program for your children. The school budget includes: employee salaries, benefits, educational supplies, textbooks, tuition assistance discounts, utilities, insurance expenses, and capital improvement/maintenance projects. The medical benefits alone for our employees increased 5% for the next school year. The total budget for 2019-2020 is approximately $2,714,500 – all of which comes from tuition, fees, and fundraisers! Again this year, we have worked very hard to keep the tuition increase for the 2019-2020 school year as low as possible. For the coming school year, the increase for one child is $9 per month for a Catholic supporting parishioner, $13 for a Catholic non-parishioner, and $16 for a non-Catholic. Tuition at School of the Madeleine is remarkably low when compared to other Catholic schools. With all the extra programs Madeleine offers, this continues to be an excellent education for your child and very affordable! Please remember, this low increase is partly possible only with the continuation of successful PSA fundraisers and the commitment of parents to volunteer during the school year. A new tuition schedule is attached to this newsletter. Thank you for your continued support and volunteer hours to help our students. STUDENT FEES & TUITION PAYMENTS FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR Student fees for the 2019-2020 school year will be due on Wednesday, May 1. A space for your child will be held only upon receipt of this payment. The student fee for each child is $280. The tuition contracts will be mailed out next week. Please sign your contract on pages 2 and 3 and return to the office by Friday, May 10 to secure a spot for returning students.

Please remember that your first tuition payment will be due July 1. Both the student fees and the first month tuition payment will be non-refundable. ESTABLISHING SUPPORTING PARISHIONER RATE To establish a supporting parishioner rate for future school years, you must use your weekly collection envelope or offertory card. If you pay monthly or bi-monthly, you must turn in an empty envelope or offertory card to demonstrate your weekly attendance at Mass. Participation in parish life and activities is also encouraged. This must be done for one year (July to June) prior to establishing a supporting parishioner status.

CMG CLEARANCE FOR 2019-2020 All returning and new families need to be cleared through the CMG Process to be able to volunteer. Returning parents who had previous clearance through the Live Scan process are not able to volunteer if you haven’t gone through the new CMG process. The CMG Process includes viewing the CMG Safe Environment Curriculum (training modules), and completing the Background Check. Both of these CMG steps require you to print and turn in a certificate of completion (one for each step) with the $20 fee made payable to School of the Madeleine. We are finding parents who may have lived in other cities/states may incur an additional fee because the city/state requires a different search process. Within the process, there is also an agreement to uphold the Code of Ethics. I want to encourage all our returning families to complete the process as soon as possible. Thank you for working to complete this additional step to help keep our students safe. CHANGES FOR NEXT YEAR Next year, we are phasing out the use of Züca backpacks on the school campus. Züca backpacks take up a lot of space, have sharp edges and corners, and are difficult for the young students to manage. They will be allowed one more year but not for the 2020-2021 school year. I want to give you notice so you do not buy one over the summer. Rolling backpacks will still be allowed. For P.E. classes, uniform P.E. t-shirts from Dennis Uniform or prior white, gray, navy, or red jog-a-thon or track t-shirts will be allowed. No other yellow, green, orange, or other color t-shirts from former jog-a-thons may be worn. Students participating in after school sports need to wear their P.E. or track uniform with appropriate length and tightness of shorts and t-shirts. While on school campus or at a school activity, students are to be modestly and appropriately dressed. NURSES OR FIRST AID CERTIFIED INDIVIDUALS NEEDED We are always in need of RN’s, LVN’s, individuals with a first aid certificate, or anyone who knows how to compassionately clean a scraped knee to volunteer in the nurse’s office between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. for school days in May, June, and for next year. You can work one day a week or several days a week. Please call the school office for more information at (619) 276-6545. COACHES FOR 2019-2020 We are currently looking for coaches for the 2019-2020 school year to help with all teams. Any parent interested in coaching a sport next year, please call Coach O’Neal in the P.E. office at (619) 276-6416. All coaches and assistant coaches will have to be cleared through the CMG process. Former clearance through the Live Scan is not acceptable going forward for next year. See more information regarding CMG earlier in this newsletter. SPORTS UNIFORMS Parents, please check your home for School of the Madeleine sports uniforms. We are missing a number of them. They all need to be turned into the P.E. office. HELP NEEDED I am looking for someone or a group who could refurbish the picnic tables outside of the classrooms. These tables are used by students, teachers, and volunteers. Many of the planks making up each table are in bad shape and need to be sanded or replaced. If you can help or would like more information, please call me at the school office (619) 276-6545.

School News April 16, 2019

VIRTUE OF THE MONTH FOR MAY

Our virtue for the month of May is “Humility”. Humility is the quality of being modest and respectful. It is the opposite of pride, aggressiveness, arrogance, boastfulness, and vanity. Humility allows us to see the dignity and worth of all God’s people. Acting with humility does not in any way deny our self worth. Rather, it affirms the inherent worth of each individual as a creation of God. Through humility, we acknowledge that God created us for His purpose and not for our self-glorification. As a community, let us help our children focus and understand the true meaning of this important virtue.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

Parents, as partners in your child’s education, please help us out by checking to see that your child is in the correct school uniform before leaving your home each morning. Some of the most common infractions are students without belts, shirts not tucked in, incorrect socks, shoe and lace color, and long hair for boys. Boys hair length must not reach below the top of the ear, touch the collar of the uniform polo, or be below the eyebrows. Please check pages 32-33 in the Parent-Student Handbook if you have any questions regarding what is the correct uniform to be worn. Also, since many of the girls have grown taller during the school year, it might be time to let out the hems in their uniform skirts. With your support, uniform infractions would take less of our energy! Thank you very much for your help in this matter. Students may wear dress up clothes on their birthday. Please see the Parent-Student Handbook (page 26) for clarification. Jeans and non-uniform shorts are not allowed for these special days. Tights are permitted but leggings are not!

UNIFORM EXCHANGE (In parking lot in front of Kindergarten)

WEDNESDAY, MAY 22

2:15 - 3:15 pm

Please bring donated uniforms prior to this exchange date. Donation drop off is in the bin outside of school office. We only accept regulation Madeleine school uniforms in GOOD condition.

MAY CROWNING DRESS ATTIRE

May Crowning will be Friday, May 17 at 10:45 a.m. in our parish church. As a reminder, Madeleine students are to wear their Sunday-best clothes. Girls should wear appropriate dresses or skirts with a blouse. No leggings are allowed! Parents, please watch the length of your daughters skirt or dress. Skirts and Dresses are not to be more than 3 inches above the knee. Boys must wear dress shirts and slacks. No shorts are allowed on this day! Second grade students will wear their first communion dresses and suits. This is a minimum day with dismissal at Noon.

MENTORS NEEDED FOR NEW MADELEINE FAMILIES Do you remember your child’s first day at Madeleine? Who was more nervous – you or your child? The Madeleine Family Mentor Program was created to ease the transition for new families and welcome them to our school community. We would like to hear from you if you are interested in being a mentor for new families for the next school year. This means making a welcoming phone call and/or email and offering to be their “contact” or “mentor” when they have questions in preparation for their first year at Madeleine. We need volunteers from all grade levels that enjoy sharing their school savvy! If you already know a new family to whom you would like to be their mentor, please provide the family’s name and I will make sure you are matched with them. Mentors will receive four (4) community service points per family for their efforts. If you would like to volunteer, or have any questions, please email me at [email protected]. New students are being accepted now so I would like to match mentors with their families soon. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Kimberly Mowrey

We are in great need of parents to attend to students that are sick or

hurt in our school office during lunch/recess time each day. Please consider signing up for a day or two. We could really use your help!

April Class News

KINDERGARTEN

In practical life we have learned how flowers grow, what they need and the life cycle of a flower. We are looking forward to our field trip to the Flower Fields on Monday April, 15th. In religion, we have learned all about Lent and the sacrifices Jesus made for us. We are working so hard to keep our Lenten promises for a few more days. Math class has the children counting money. Please practice these money skills at home. Let them sort your coins and tell you the name and amounts. Some students have been counting different coin amounts. We started discussing time and alendar skills. Please continue to work on addition facts to 5. Our goal is for the students to memorize the addition facts. Please work on these at home. Our students are so motivated in the Reading Room. It is exciting to hear them reading! Please continue your support of the reading room with your volunteer work and you’ll be pleased to hear their progress as well. The children really buzz along with their work now, especially when we have plenty of volunteers. It is exciting to be a part of it.

FIRST GRADE

It’s hard to believe we are approaching Holy Week, and Easter is around the corner! We hope this Lenten Season has enriched your souls! The children have been learning about the Love Our Lord has for them, and that He revealed that “Great Love by dying for them, and Rising from the dead, to secure our Eternal Life in Heaven! We are fast approaching the end of first grade! The children have grown, and matured in the last few months! They have developed their reading, writing, and math skills, which has laid a strong foundation for the next step in their educational journey! Wishing you all, a Holy, and a Happy Easter!!

Page 12: St. Mary Magdalene Wednesday, May 1 8:10 a.m. feast days and …schoolofthemadeleine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/4.16... · 2019. 4. 4. · MAY CROWNING Our annual Living Rosary

SECOND GRADE

While it seems as if it took a long time for Easter Break to arrive, April went by in a flash! We continue to be having a great time in math, gaining number fluency with drills and learning how to add and subtract three-digit numbers. In social studies, we studied our country’s government and how to use maps. We are continuing to develop as writers and readers, learning the difference between opinion and fact and using more writing in science. Our animal diorama’s filled our classrooms and captivated our and any all classroom visitors all month. We will have just as much fun with our cereal box book report. In religion, we prepared for our First Holy Communion. We learned about the Liturgy of the Eucharist and how to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus. We were very excited to finally be invited to the “adult table” at Mass. A special thanks goes to Miss Mary Kay and Father Steve for all their help in preparing for our special day.

THIRD GRADE

The 4th quarter is here and we are being challenged! In math, we are learning division and advanced multiplication. We are learning about weather and climate in science. We are close to finishing our handwriting books. It was a challenge at first, but now we are writing in cursive with ease. We have been working on our Stations of the Cross booklets in Religion. We are finishing up the 50 Mile Club in May and working hard to make our Renaissance points. The top three readers will be awarded in May! We want to wish everyone a restful break. It will be wonderful time to be with our family and recharge. Happy Easter!

FOURTH GRADE

We can’t believe that this year is almost over and that we will soon be fifth graders! We have been busy learning many new things. In math we are learning about fractions and decimals and how they are related. Next we will learn about area, perimeter, and volume. We are learning how energy and motion are related in science. It was fun to see our Rube Goldberg machines show energy transfer in action. In social studies we have started on a new unit called “Connecting California to the World.” We worked together on a role-playing activity where we interviewed key players in early communication between California and the East Coast. Next we will learn about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. In religion we are looking forward to Easter and learning how much God loves us. “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

FIFTH GRADE

Welcome Spring! The 5th graders are moving along nicely in their studies. We have been participating in all of our our Lenten activities and prayers. Many of our students are faithful altar servers, taking time to do daily and weekend Masses. They have participated as readers and petitioners in Stations of the Cross and prayer services in the classroom. You have given your children the gift of a Catholic education where we can come together and talk frankly and openly about issues in our community and families. Your children remember loved ones and family members and friends who may be struggling, or in need of prayers of guidance. It is amazing at how thoughtful they are of others in the quiet times we have together. Enjoy your time together this Easter break. Celebrate each other and create memories together.

SIXTH GRADE

Sixth graders have been back at work after being away for a week in the woods! Our camp experiences included challenging ourselves to climb the 40-foot rock wall, working as teams to create shelters, and sharing songs and stories. We continue to challenge ourselves by keeping our Lenten promises and preparing to celebrate the joy of Jesus’ resurrection at Easter. Our geology studies include a recent rock project in which we collected various rocks and identified them by type using various observational tests. Our recent field trip to Mission Trails Regional Park allowed us the opportunity to see geology and earth science concepts up close. Our literature focus has been on poetry, including creating our own poems using figurative language and sound devices that we studied. We continue to learn about the civilization of Ancient China, as well as the religious and philosophical beliefs that make it unique. We will continue to keep our focus on school as we work to meet our goals for the fourth quarter!

SEVENTH GRADE

We are looking forward to our spring break, but still have a lot to do before we can enjoy ourselves. In social studies we are studying the interesting medieval times of Europe. Our study of the human body continues in science. We learned how to read food labels and know all about digestion. We are currently studying the heart and how the blood flows through the heart to the body. Comparative anatomy studies of the circulatory systems in amphibians, reptiles and mammals have led us to our dissection unit. We started our virtual frog dissection in the computer lab and we are surprised how realistic it is! The big advantage of doing a virtual dissection is that we can dissect a lot more organs including the brain and eye, as well as the heart, lungs, digestive system, and muscles. In religion we are wrapping up our study of the Sacraments and will be preparing for our Holy Week Retreat next week, where we will read and reflect on Jesus’ Passion and Crucifixion in great detail. Salvation, Jesus nailed it! We wish everyone a blessed Easter. May the Resurrection of Christ bring us all new life!

EIGHTH GRADE

We’re excited to recreate Jesus’ washing of his disciples’ feet during the Last Supper at the Lenten Prayer Service on Holy Thursday. We’ve also already begun choosing our classes for high school; we’re excited to do this, but we’re still enjoying our last moments at School of the Madeleine.

In science, we’re learning about changes in matter, Boyle’s law and Charles’ law. In advanced math, we’re working on radical equations and Pythagorean theory, and in regular math, we are working on polyhedrons and other three dimensional theories. We’re learning about events leading up to the Civil War in social studies, and we are going over the Protestant Reformation in religion. In Spanish, we are learning about conjugating regular verbs. In literature, we are reading How To Kill a Mockingbird, and in English, we have been studying subject verb agreement.

Happy Eas t e r!
