Started by the Daughters of Wisdom and the Montfort Fathers in Ozone Park, the acad- emy continues to follow the tenets set forth by its founders. The academy’s goal is to provide the chil- dren of Ozone Park and surrounding communi- ties with an environ- ment in which to grow as whole persons: spiri- tually, mentally, and physically in a Catholic context, modeled on Christ’s teachings. Children of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome. The diversity of cultures and religions allows for the exploration and the understanding of the needs of the students. The school commu- nity understands that each child is special and unique. St. Mary Gate of Heaven is a learning environment that focuses on teaching and guiding each child indi- vidually, with the help of the parents who are a child’s primary teachers. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, St. Mary Gate of Heaven will continue to be a beacon of light for our community. The academy’s mis- sion is to educate stu- dents, according to high academic standards, in a safe, nurturing environ- ment that reflects the love of Jesus Christ. All students are encouraged to develop personal dig- nity, moral character, love of learning and a sense of responsibility. Acknowledging that parents are chil- dren’s primary educators, St Mary Gate of Heaven’s faculty and staff, cooperate with both parents and students, to guide each child toward the realization of his or her full spiritual, academic, personal and phys- ical potential. This year, St. Mary Gate of Heaven changed its math program: students in kindergarten through eighth grade now use the GO Math! program, and it’s pro- ducing great results. Students enjoy the rigorous material and have been perform- ing very well. The decision to switch to this series was due in part to the adoption of the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards. The goal is to challenge stu- dents and prepare them for the future. Additional materials help to enrich learn- ing for accelerated students and use of sup- portive materials assist struggling students. Prospective families are invited to call to schedule a tour of the academy, and to meet the staff and principal, Philip Heide.
