St. Louis County Parks Spring/Summer 2015 Activity Guide

Spring is a time of newness, and I’m pleased to announce several new additions to our parks. This April, we will be hosting the Grand Opening of the Pavilion at Lemay - a multi-million dollar project, nearly ten years in the making. This gorgeous state-of-

the-art community center includes fitness facilities offering group classes, indoor sports and meeting rooms. The walking track circles the building offering a 360-degree view of beautiful Jefferson Barracks Park. The aquatic center, opening this summer, features a deep diving pool flanked by a rock climbing wall.

I am also pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the Aquatic Center at the North County Recreation Complex. This beautiful water park was finished last August and will host its grand opening in May. The complex will be a wonderful summer destination with a lazy river, children’s play equipment and water slides.

I’d like to thank our Parks Department for their tireless efforts to make these projects a reality. Of course, all of our County Parks will be hosting wonderful events throughout the summer and I encourage all St. Louis County residents to take advantage and enjoy with their family and friends.

Thornhill Open HouseFaust Park has added more chances to tour the former home of Governor Frederick Bates. Walk or drive down the gravel road behind the Butterfly House to find this nearly 200 year old treasure. The house was restored to its 1820 appearance and is partially furnished. The estate also includes a detached kitchen, period barns, a smokehouse, ice house, orchard and family cemetery. Period dressed guides offer a glimpse into Missouri’s past. Laumeier Free Family DaysFREE Family Days provide participants of all ages a chance to bond while encouraging observation, imagination, curiosity and creativity. Activities are designed to be simple enough for ages 4 and up to enjoy, yet complex enough that more experienced young artists can take their projects to another level. Families will have fun exploring new media and concepts while finding inspiration within Laumeier’s natural environment, temporary exhibitions and Permanent Collection.

WWII Weekend Don’t miss this annual event! Stroll through the military camps and talk with re-enactors representing the troops of the U.S., British, Canadian, Soviet and German armies of WWII. The weekend begins on Friday with tours available in the living history camps from 1-3 p.m. Learn about the uniforms, weapons and equipment. Roam’n ‘Round the County Road RallyWant to get out and go for a drive? Whether you have a classic car or something new, we have just the route for you. Join us for the first County Parks Road Rally! You and your navigators will have a cruz’in day discovering several area parks. Earn hints and clues that will tell you the way. Your team may be challenged to games and riddles. The day will end with a BBQ and prizes for the top teams. Rally begins at the Museum of Transportation. WWII Canteen DanceDance to Big Band music from the World War II era with Michael Lacy and his New Orleans Swing Band. Doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner will be catered by Andre’s: advanced meal tickets are $9 and $12 at the door. Other refreshments including barbeque plates, snacks, beer, soda and bottled water will be available at reasonable prices. Dance tickets are $17.50 in advance and $25 at the door. Music * Fairs * FestivalsArt Fair at LaumeierArt Fair at Laumeier is a nationally acclaimed fine art and craft fair with more than 15,000 visitors attending the annual event held on Mother’s Day weekend. Visitors can choose from a variety of creative and original works of art created by 150 artists from across the country. In addition to the artwork, food and drink from a variety of vendors is available and you’ll find exciting music and entertainment throughout the weekend.

Creation Location on Saturday and Sunday provides hands-on art activities for children and demonstrations by performing and visual artists. No pets allowed during this special event.

Faust Summer Concert SeriesThis summer, spend your Tuesday evening at Faust Park Amphitheater! The Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce and St. Louis County Parks will present top local entertainment for free concerts and family fun from 7-9 p.m. Enter Faust via the north entrance for free parking close to the stage. Bring your own seating. Food trucks will be on site for food and beverage purchases. Youth Fishing Day CampSt. Louis’ only “fishing” day camp is a big hit with kids! St. Louis County Park Rangers conduct the camp where children spend the week learning to be good anglers. Each day the group will venture out to a new fishing location. Meet in front of the Recreation Complex off of the Weidman Road entrance. Meet promptly at 8:30 a.m. Each child should bring their own non-perishable lunch and two water bottles. Fishing equipment will be provided. Outdoor Skills CampAttention outdoor enthusiasts! If you ever wanted to learn to throw a tomahawk or shoot a bow and arrow, this is your chance. Spend a week learning new outdoor skills. This camp, hosted by St. Louis County Park staff will teach new skills in a variety of settings. Our unique camp will travel to several different parks, giving campers opportunities to visit new areas while testing the waters on new skills. Learning the correct way to control a canoe, starting a fire with flint and steel and hiking to a cave are some of the experiences you will enjoy. Knowledgeable staff and close supervision will allow the adventuresome camper to spread their wings in a safe and controlled environment. Attempting new skills will be challenging as well as fun. Age restrictions are strictly enforced so all campers have the opportunity to get the most enjoyment out of camp. Participants may start from either Kennedy Complex or Queeny Complex. This is our largest paddle demo day of the year featuring representatives from all of our major watersport brands. HistoryThe former home of General Daniel Bissell, participant in the American Revolutionary War and military commander of the Upper Louisiana Territory from 1809-1813. After the War of 1812 Bissell returned to the St. Louis area. The Federal-style house was home to five generations of the Bissell family whose decorative arts and furnishings are displayed.

The house and property was donated to St. Louis County by the Bissell family in 1961 and the home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Birthday PartiesCreation Station, located in the Orthwein Visitor Center, is a hands-on learning environment for kids five and under that introduces children to modes of transportation and is the perfect place for a party! Parties include exclusive Creation Station playtime, museum admission for guests, helium balloons, snack sacks, party bags, a special gift for the birthday child, invitations and thank-you notes and all paper products.

Your child can be the “Honorary Conductor” for a day! Your child receives a conductor gift box containing a bandana, train whistle, four museum admission tickets and a coloring book. Their name will appear on the museum marquee as they greet guests. They also help the train engineer and announce “All Aboard!” They will receive a special gift. General InformationAs St. Louis County has been progressively developed, many nineteenth century structures have been lost. But Faust Historic Village has and continues to preserve the area’s vernacular architecture and history. There are four homes and 14 additional structures representing a variety of building and architectural styles, from log to brick.

Spanning a period from 1840 to 1910, the Village provides a context in which the lifestyles of the settlers of St. Louis County and the skills they used to survive are illustrated.

HoursGeneral park hours are 8 a.m. – 30 minutes past sunset, when all buildings can be viewed from the outside at no cost. Brochures are available in information boxes, in our office, and online.

In 2015, the Historic Village homes are open on select weekends in April, June and July.

EventsFaust Park hosts a variety of events in and near the Historic Village including Open Houses, FEAST in the Park, and Olden Days of Summer. Later in the season are History Hayrides and the Faust Heritage Festival in September. General InformationThe St. Louis Carousel is an original 1920s carousel from the Dentzel Co. of Philadelphia. The carousel was installed at the St. Louis Highlands Amusement Park in 1929. After a fire in 1963 destroyed the park, the carousel was moved to Sylvan Springs Park and operated there until 1979. The St. Louis County Historic Buildings commission and the Faust Park Foundation raised funds to restore the Carousel, bringing it to Faust Park.

HistoryFort Belle Fontaine Park has been a St. Louis County park since 1986.

As the United States’ first military post west of the Mississippi River, Fort Belle Fontaine was the final stop of Lewis and Clark’s “Corps of Discovery” expedition and served as the starting point for other explorers.

Hours & PricingOpen from 8 a.m. - 30 minutes past sunset every day.

Entrance to the park is free (with the exception of special events).

Park InformationThe park comprises 305.6 acres on the Missouri River in north St. Louis County. It contains four main areas; the Missouri River; Belle Fontaine Spring; Coldwater Creek; and a 50-acre upland prairie and wetlands. The Lewis & Clark Interpretative Trail is a three-mile multi-purpose trail which includes a trailhead and interpretive signage which guides visitors to all four main areas of the park.

Programs & Activities

A variety of programs are scheduled at Fort Belle throughout the year including ghost stories, hayrides, Prairie Day and the very popular Eagle Watch and Trail Walk.

To visit the park, follow Bellefontaine Road north and enter through the Missouri Hills Home security station. You may be asked to sign in and enter your license number.

General InformationBuilt ca. 1819 for Missouri’s second governor, Frederick Bates, Thornhill is the oldest standing governor’s home in Missouri and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The estate consists of a number of restored and recreated structures, including a detached kitchen and three barns.

Educational Programs

The history staff at Faust Park offers a variety of educational programs and guided tours for all ages. Our most popular program is the four-hour “Farmsteading at Thornhill” program. Feedback shows that many students call this their favorite field trip despite the fact that they are performing physical chores expected of a 19th century child. Fall registration begins after March 1 and Spring registration begins after August 1. Call (314) 615-8336 for reservations.

Open House EventsTake the opportunity to tour the Thornhill home as well as the surrounding estate which includes the barns, the smokehouse, ice house, peach orchard and blacksmith shop. The estate also includes the family cemetery, burial site of Governor Bates, his wife, Nancy and two of their four children.
