GOD’S WORD TODAY Today’s Gospel presents us with a scene that is echoed time and time again in our society. From an early age, most of us have been encouraged to be first—first in line, first in the class, first to be picked for the team. This encouragement continues throughout our lives. Being first is fundamentally about power. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being first. The problems set in when we use the power of being first to manipulate and use the people we consider somehow “beneath” us. So many problems of our world and church revolve around this kind of abuse of power. Let us pray that today’s Gospel, which addresses these issues head on, will inspire all to use their power in ways that build up rather than tear down and destroy.

PASTOR’S CORNER In last Sunday’s Gospel passage we encounter the rebuking of Peter by Jesus. “You are not thinking as God does, but as human beings do.” How can we possibly think like God thinks? It is not easy! It begins with daily prayer, openness to the Holy Spirit’s gifts and through attentiveness to sacred scripture. We should ask God daily to increase our faith and strengthen our awareness of His Divine presence in our lives. May we also listen to the many messages of the great spiritual leaders that God sends to shepherd and guide us. A reflection by Pope Francis offers these insights about Meeting Jesus: “Our whole life is an encounter with Jesus: in prayer, when we go to Mass, and when we do good works, when we visit the sick, when we help the poor, when we think of others, when we are not selfish, when we are loving . . . in these things we always meet Jesus. And the journey of life is precisely this: journeying in order to meet Jesus.”

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.

MARRIAGE IN CHRIST Congratulations are extended to Erin Sullivan & David Oulton who were united in the Sacrament of Matrimony on Saturday, September 12, 2015. May they continue to grow in their love for God and each other.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Toward the end of the second century, a churchman in North Africa, Tertullian, described an early form of penance. Imagine if it had survived! There were three steps to this very public ritual. The unfortunate sinner was brought before the community in an itchy garment of goat’s hair. The communities of the day were small and intimate, and everyone knew everyone else. The shame of exposure for a big sin—murder, idolatry, or adultery—would have been profound. The penitent would beg the community for prayers of intercession, and then go sit in a place assigned to penitents. After this public confession, the penitent would be assigned some discipline, usually a relatively severe fast, or the wearing of distinctive garb. This remedy for sin was for a certain period of time, or at least until the bishop (every small community has its own bishop) judged that enough was enough. Then the person would be readmitted to the Eucharistic community, although Tertullian doesn’t tell us how. Probably the bishop tenderly placed his hands on their heads, precisely where they were anointed at baptism. We do know that the readmission of penitents to the Eucharistic table became in some churches a great celebration, and there are records from Spain of bishops leading penitents in a dance‑like processional into the Eucharistic hall on Holy Thursday.

REFUGEES IN
EASTERN EUROPE CHALLENGE RESOURCES
OF CRS
Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian relief agency of the Catholic Community in the United States. CRS is doing what it can with limited resources in Eastern Europe in response to the refugee crisis there. In Serbia, Macedonia and Greece, CRS is working with local Catholic, Orthodox, nongovernmental organizations and government partners to provide emergency relief, medical care, translation services, and legal counseling. They have reached more than 5,000 vulnerable refugees and migrants, mostly from Syria, in the past month. CRS has also constructed a facility equipped with beds, bedding, bathrooms, and showers in the town of Kanjiza, near the Serbian and Hungarian border. About 1,000 refugees and migrants pass through the town each day. And to date, CRS has increased access to medical, legal, and other support services for more than 3,800 refugees. Obviously, this effort can only meet a small part of the need, but more can be done with your help. Please donate now through the secure website of CRS at www.crs.org.
