Saint Joseph Church Mission Statement

We have been called together as disciples of the Lord as St. Joseph Parish. We are united with brothers and sisters far and near in the

message and mission of Jesus Christ. As a parish family we will witness to God’s love and presence through our celebration of the sacraments, the proclamation of

God’s Word , the formation of all into discipleship and our service to others.

We are a people who are deeply Eucharistic which strengthens us for the mission that has been entrusted to us. We will use all of the God-given gifts to show that we are eager to welcome the

stranger, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and comfort the bereaved.

DO YOU GRIEVE THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE? St Leo’s Parish will begin their fall Bereavement Support Group on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at St. Leo’s, in the Rectory Meeting Room. It will commence at 7:00 p.m. and conclude around 8:30 p.m. It will consist of approximately six weekly sessions. Many people have benefited from the kind of mutual support a Bereavement Group can offer. Nothing can ever replace a loved one, but together, in an atmosphere of love and under-standing, we hope to provide some help in dealing with grief that death brings. The ministry is open to all. Please advise any members of your family and friends that we welcome them with compassionate arms. If you are interested in registering or would like more infor-mation, please call Judy Regan at 201-703-9367.

CALL UPON THE LORD The very first line of today’s first reading summons us to seek the Lord and to call upon God. This sentiment is echoed in the refrain for today’s responsorial psalm: “The Lord is near to all who call upon him” (Psalm 145:18a). Saint Paul is the embodiment of someone who constantly sought the Lord. In the excerpt we read today from his letter to the Philippians, we find Saint Paul to-ward the end of his life, a life he describes as completely consonant with Christ. He writes, “For to me life is Christ” (Philippians 1:21). To find out what it means to live life completely in accord with Christ we need look no further than today’s Gospel. There we find that God’s love and mercy are immeasurable for all those who seek and call upon the Lord.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Turn to the LORD, who is generous in forgiving (Isaiah 55:6-9). Psalm — The Lord is near to all who call upon him (Psalm 145). Second Reading — Live your lives in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ (Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a). Gospel — The last will be first, and the first will be last (Matthew 20:1-16a).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Along with the reform of the Roman Canon and the re-drafting of an ancient Roman prayer in Eucharistic Prayer II, two additional prayers were announced in 1969. Eucharistic Prayer III is a fresh composition. Like Eucharistic Prayer II, it has no preface of its own, but the presider chooses from a long menu of possible prefaces to become part of the prayer on a particular occasion. Also, like Eucharistic Prayer II it has a way to insert the name of the deceased in Masses for the dead such as funerals and memorials. The General In-struction of the Roman Missal views Eucharistic Prayer III as the best substitute for Eucharistic Prayer I on Sundays and feasts. In practice, this prayer is used very often at Sunday Mass, and its texts are familiar to all members of the assem-bly. In this prayer, notice that the priest extends his hands over the gifts and calls down the Holy Spirit to change them into the Body and Blood of Christ. This call of the Holy Spirit is called the epiclesis, and Eastern Christians consider it to be the consecration. Latin Christians have long consid-ered the “institution narrative” to be the consecration. Partly in response to a deep sensitivity to the East, the reformers took care to structure all our new prayers with a strong epi-clesis. The poetry and images of Eucharistic Prayer III are fruitful sources of meditation. Why not take a sentence or two into your private prayer?

Today's Gospel of St. Matthew invites us to reconcile our human thoughts with the gratuitousness of God. His Mercy is so great that he has no divisions of love in his Heart for any human being he has created. It is a great way to teach us to be grateful with lots of gratitude. To have the opportunity to say thanks for what we receive. He is the owner of the whole world and sole absolute king of the uni-verse. Therefore we cannot at any time and in any way limit the grace of God that comes to each and everyone equally and in equal proportions, In the same way we are always ready to receive the good things God gives us, and suddenly and somehow we demand that we be treated as others and many times in our selfishness we don’t realize the wonderful gra-tuity God has for all. Today in different parts of the world in different parts of the universe many changes are happening, great disasters, earthquakes, windstorms and hurricanes that are killing human life and also nature. The very nature is against the tranquility of the world. Let us think at this moment would we want to demand to be the first ones in there? In those horrible catastrophes of the world? Would we want earthquakes to hit us first? Or our beaches? or why we did not get the equal amount of rain and floods that others got? It is very good from time to time and very important to analyze profoundly what is it that we de-mand, what it is that we want and most of all what is it that we deserve. Let us ask God therefore to give us a deep feeling of grati-tude for all. In all ways let us ask God to help us look at others the same way we want to be looked at because in God’s eyes we are all the same. In God’s eyes no one is first or last, we are equal and our payment will always be more than what we deserve. Let us give thanks to God. Let us pray for our brothers all over the world who are today suffering; for the people that are waiting to be rescued and also for those who are under the rocks suffering the pain of nature. Let us be united, let us be united with one another. Let us ask God to open our hearts for us not to be jealous of the good of others but, to thank him for all that he gives us. On this special day, I want to finish this small note thanking everyone for the wonderful participation we have had in prayer for all the people who need it. Also we are grateful for what we have managed to collect for the people who need our help so much in Texas as in Florida, Puerto Rico and all the Caribbean and especially Mexico and the United States our country that God protects us and fill us with its light.
