In the last parish I was at my pastor came from Punxatawney, PA and, for some reason he was proud of Punxatawney Phil, (the weather predicting ground hog). Well, this year I’ve decided to celebrate Punxatawney Phil with that dear pastor since Phil has said that an early spring is on its way! At least that’s what the furry forecaster foresees. I hate to admit it, but Phil’s gotten my hopes up by his weather prediction. Ah hope…actually that’s what this upcoming season of Lent marks – a time of hope. Yet many of us think, ‘Yuk, Lent, time to give something up…again.’ Yes, Lent is a time of Penance both for ourselves and our world; a time to turn our hearts back to God and His commandments. Whether it be ashes or fasting, these things need to reflect an interior change of attitude and heart. The sacrifices we make aren’t simply things we do for a short period of time, but what Lent is meant to accomplish, is a time of reflection on why we’re giving this or that up, and how will this sacrifice change our behavior and attitudes to allow us to grow in holiness. Sure, giving up things like chocolate or soda can be beneficial to our health, but it’s not the reason we do this during these 40 days; Lent (or fasting) doesn’t equal diet. Each time we get a craving and we want that candy bar, can of soda or whatever, we need to remember those who don’t have the basic necessities of food and offer a prayer for them or take the money that we would have spent on these things and give it to Project Rice Bowl or another charity. Or, perhaps you may want to consider fasting from a television program or the radio and use that time to read and reflect on Scripture. You see, fasting is something that is required of us; on Ash Wednesday we will hear Jesus say “when you fast,” not “if you fast.” These outward symbols of fasting or ashes need to reach our hearts; otherwise they are meaningless rituals. Once I was in a hospital on Ash Wednesday to distribute ashes for employees who couldn’t get to an Ash Wednesday service. A lady sitting across the waiting area watched as employees left with smudges of ‘dirt’ on their foreheads. Eventually she came up and asked what us ‘Catholics’ were doing. (I was in Baptist country and people always seemed skeptical of Catholic rituals.) I talked of Jonah and how the people of Nineveh repented of their sins with sackcloth and ashes and also how King David repented of his sins with an outward sign of sack cloth. I told her how ashes were an outward symbol for us to show our sorrow for the times we sinned against God and one another. She looked at me and said, “Do you have to be Catholic to get ashes? Can I get ashes too?” She saw how the use of this symbol penetrated the heart and was really about our hope. Sometimes we miss that. We forget the hope and only think of the sacrifice. We forget that Lent is a time of drawing nearer to God’s love for us and instead see it as a time to ‘give up’ something. We forget it’s about having an interior change, which will lead to an exterior behavior. In 40 days we should be different people – holier than we are now. Here at St. Joseph’s we have multiple ways to help us on this journey of conversion. In addition to our regular penance schedule, again we will have a penance service here in March with a number of priests to help us celebrate God’s mercy; an additional Mass is scheduled at 12:15 PM allowing us to reflect on the Word of God and receive Jesus in the Eucharist; Stations of the Cross each Friday (another wonderful Franciscan tradition); and just as in Advent we had the ‘little blue books’ for meditation purposes, for Lent we will have the ‘little black books’ available to aid us in our spiritual journey. May this season bring us hope and joy as we recall all Christ did for us.

As Roy Rogers and Dale Evans would say, “Happy trails to you” during this season.

“CALL TO PRAYER AND PENANCE”

1. I encourage all parishioners to gather for a monthly Eucharistic Holy Hour. Eucharistic Adoration is held on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

2. Next to the Holy Mass, the most powerful prayer we can offer is the Rosary. I invite all parishioners to pray a Daily Rosary either as individuals, or, even better, as a family, especially for preservation of Life. Reflect on each mystery and apply it to your individual lives and circumstances.

3. We will include specific intentions in the Prayers of the Faithful for (a) respect for all human life, from conception to natural death; (b) strengthening marriage and family life; and (c) preserving and upholding religious liberty at all levels of government, both home and abroad.

4. I encourage all parishioners to abstain from meat on Fridays all year long and to fast on that day as well.

5. We will plan to have a second Fortnight for Freedom at the end of June and the beginning of July 2013. This Fortnight would emphasize in a particular way faith and marriage and also the need for conscience protections and religious liberty concerns in other areas, such as immigration, adoption and humanitarian services.

As Bishop Loverde requests: “Let’s be partners in the ‘Call to Prayer and Penance’ by participating in all or at least one of the above suggestions.” Fr. Mike, T.O.R.

God who were baptized on February 3, 2013: Brayan Daniel Delcid Diaz son of Delcid & Flor; Sofia Portillo Guardado daughter of Pastor & Sandra; Sander Binicio Zamora son of Rodolfo & Mayra

During Lent, in addition to the daily 6:30 a.m., 8 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Masses, Stations of the Cross will be on Friday at 7 p.m., 8:00 p.m. in Spanish. The Lenten Rules for Fast and Abstinence are: 1) Lent is to be observed by Catholics as a special season of prayer, penance, and works of charity. 2) Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the most important penitential days of the liturgical year. They are days of both fast and abstinence. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. 3) The rules for fasting are that only one full meal a day can be taken. Two small meals, ‘sufficient to maintain strength,’ are allowed but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals breaks the fast, but drinking liquids does not. The rule of fasting obliges Catholics from 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year. 4) Abstinence refers to refraining from eating meat. The rule of abstinence binds all Catholics age 14 years and older. 5) The substantial observance of the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious obligation. Those whose work or whose health would be impaired are excused from fasting and abstaining.

ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL 2012-2013

Give your child the gift of Catholic Education!

“35” Reasons to Celebrate St. Joseph School.

Reason 23: St. Joseph School has been blessed since 1978 with supportive parents and parish benefactors. For the past twenty years, the St. Joseph PTO has sponsored an annual auction and dinner dance to benefit the school’s program of excellence. The following is a sampling, yet surely not con-clusive, of the many items procured through the generosity of St. Joseph School supporters. The computer, science and art labs have been refurbished. The library comprises over 10,000 books, an online database and educational software. The gymnasium is enhanced by a high school regulation basketball and volley ball court, a climbing wall, theater stage with lighting and sound system, bleachers for 250 spectators and a variety of physical education equipment for all stages of student development. All K-8 and Encore class-rooms are equipped with a Promethean Activboard, teacher laptop and docking station and interactive educational soft-ware. Finally, the exterior of the school building is enriched by a running track and an enclosed playground. On February 23, 2013, celebrate the 35th anniversary of our parish school by attending this year’s spectacular annual event. Come “SAIL-A-BRATE” with the Friars, Admin-istration, faculty, staff and community and anchor the future of St. Joseph School. Consider donating a treasure or talent and help make the evening a historic event!
