Octubre 29, Trigésimo Domingo Del Tiempo Ordinario Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,

Como ya he mencionado, algunos padres eligen a padrinos como recompensa por

amistades íntimas o por respeto a una relación familiar. Muchas veces hablando con los padres, les pregunto si las personas que están eligiendo para ser padrinos están practicando su fe; es decir, van al Sacramento de la Reconciliación, reciben la Sagrada Comunión y van a la Santa Misa todos los domingos. He recibido la respuesta: "No lo sé, padre". Debe saber sin dudas si las personas que elige para su hijo comprenden lo que significa ser plenamente Católico. Si están viviendo activamente su fe, es probable que comprendan la obligación de cuidar el papel de ser padrino y estan viviendo una vida en armonía con la fe. Las personas elegidas para ser padrinos no deben estar obligadas por una pena canónica legalmente impuesta o declarada. En otras palabras, no viven de una manera que les impida recibir los sacramentos. Algunos ejemplos serian tu hermano que vive con su novia y que no puede recibir la Sagrada Comunion o la Confesion por la vida que a escogido vivir. Y como Consecuencia de vivir en pecado y no arrepentirse, es decir no cambiar su estilo de vida, es libremente separarse de vivir plenamente unido a Cristo, y a la misma vez con la Iglesia. Digamos que usted quiere escojer a su mejor amigo, que va todos los domingos a misa, pero nunca recibe la sagrada communion, porque no esta vivendo en el sacramento del matrimonio, solo esta casado por el civil. O quizas quieres escoger a tu primo que trabaja para planned parenthood. Que es una organizacion que trabaja agresivamente para promover el derecho a la matanza de bebes no nacidos. Esta ayudando a promover o hasta cometer este grave pecado. Esto lo separa de estar en communion con Cristo y la Iglesia. Estos tres ejemplos son ejemplos que previene a una persona a ser padrino. Yo les digo a los padres que si escogen a una persona que no llena los requisitos, que hablen con ellos. Por ejemplo: “me gustaria que tu fueras el padrino de mi hijo pero no estas casado por la Iglesia. Por eso no te puedo escoger a ti.” Alguna vez as preguntado que se necesita para bendecir tu matrimonio por la Iglesia? O “de verdad me gustaria que fueras la madrina de mi hija, pero como estas viviendo con tu novio, no te puedo preguntar a ti.” Has pensado alguna vez hacer las cosas bien con Dios y cambiar tu modo de vida? Estas pueden ser oportunidades para traer a alguien de regreso a vivir una vida plena con la Iglesia. Dear Brothers and Sisters, As I have already mentioned, some parents choose god-parents as a reward for close

friendships or out of respect for a family relation. Often times in speaking to the parents, I ask them if the people they are choosing to be the god-parents are practicing their faith; that is to say, are they going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, receiving Holy Communion and are they going to Holy Mass every Sunday. I have gotten the answer, “I don’t know, Father.” You should know without a doubt if the people you choose for your child understands what it means to be fully Catholic. If they are actively living out their faith, chances are they understand the obligation of caring out the role of a god-parent and are living a life in harmony with the faith. The persons chosen to be god-parents must not be bound by canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared. In other words, they do not live in a way that prevents them from receiving the Sacraments. Some examples would be your brother who is living with his girlfriend can not receive Holy Communion or Confession because of the life he has chosen to live. The penalty of living in sin and not repenting from it, that is changing your ways, is to freely separate yourself from full unity with Christ, and thus with the Church. Or let say you want to choose your long-time friends who do go to Holy Mass on Sunday but never receive Holy Communion because they are not living in the Sacrament of Matrimony, they were only married civilly. Or perhaps you want to choose a cousin who works for planned parenthood. Because such an organization works aggressively for the right and the promotion of murdering unborn children, they help promote or even commit very grave sin. This separates them for being fully united with Christ and thus His Church. These three examples would be what prevents a person from being a god-parent. I tell parents that if they want to choose a person to be a god-parent, but they do not fulfill the qualifications, that they should speak to them. For example: “I would really like for you to be my son’s god-parents but you are not married in the Church, so I can not ask you. Did you every think of asking what it would take to have your marriage blessed in the Church?” or “I really want you to be my daughter’s god-mother, but because you are living with your boyfriend, I can not ask you. Have you ever thought of making things right with God and changing the way you live?” These can be opportunities to bring someone back into the full life of the Church. I have blessed many marriages and heard many confessions of those, because they were challenged, they responded with a conversion of life.
