Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Please consider coming to our Advent Penitential Service tomorrow night at 8pm—in the upper church in English and the lower church in Spanish. Priests and people from St. John’s, St. Mary’s, and Ascension will gather here to celebrate together God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Individual confessions will be heard at the conclusion of the service.

+++ Our new Outdoor Nativity creche will be blessed and illuminated on this Saturday, December 18th, at 5pm on the front lawn of the rectory. The new stable was fashioned by parishioner Niall O’Hagan, who offered his carpentry skills to create a new home for the figures of the Holy Family, shepherds, magi, and assorted animals. Our outdoor nativity is another way to proclaim the message of “Emmanuel—God with us” to the many people who pass by our church every day. May its beauty captivate some to at least stop, think, and pray, and perhaps also enter the church itself for an encounter with the Sacramental Jesus in the tabernacle and at Mass! All are invited to join us outside for this blessing.

+++ The religious priests, brothers and sisters who faithfully serve us under a vow of poverty thank you for your support for the many religious who are retired or in infirmaries, through your generous offerings today to the Retirement Fund for Religious. Your gift benefits a number of religious congregations in meeting the expenses of their retired members. Msgr. Richard Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Gospel

The imprisoned John the Baptist struggles with his discouragement, perhaps becoming disillusioned when it seemed that Jesus was not emerging as the powerful figure and judge whom he had heralded. No doubt John was not alone in his disappointment, and, for that reason, Matthew presents this story in which Jesus clarifies not only his own role but also that of John. Jesus had come to extend the saving power of God especially to the least ones of the world; as messiah he fulfilled the Isaian promises by healing and making whole the blind, the lame, the deaf and the mute. Surely John was impressed by this aspect of Jesus’ ministry, but he still expected something more, something different, something more in keeping with those messianic traditions of a warrior, a judge, a vindicator. To John and to those who shared his expectations, Jesus offered a beatitude for those who took no offense at his interpretation of his role. Jesus clarifies the unique role that John played in God’s plan of salvation. Like Jesus, John has exercised his mission as messianic herald in an unexpected manner. If one were announcing a king, a messiah, one might expect such pageantry and pomp as befits royalty (fine clothes, palaces). But John did not bow to protocol and opted instead to present himself as a desert prophet calling out for the repentance that would properly prepare the way for the messiah. In his capacity as prophet and herald, John had no equal, insisted Jesus. However, the era of the messiah would be so decisive and the fulfillment to which John pointed was so great as to create an entirely new perspective. As great as John was, he could not compare to the least in the kingdom. Instead of being a rebuke of John, the last verse of today’s Gospel makes the point that in the coming kingdom of God, the little ones who believe in Jesus will be of equal standing with such important witnesses as John. As the roles of Jesus and John are clarified in our hearing, a question emerges to challenge each of us with its urgency: What is your role in furthering the healing ministry of Jesus? As we anticipate his return , let us be renewed in our efforts to make him known.
