The Mass is about divine love. It is both the outpouring of love proceeding from the heart of our heavenly Father through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, and transmitted by the Holy Spirit, as well as the response of perfect love given back to the Father by Christ on our behalf. Through the Mass, we are caught up in the divine romance of God. Each of us was conceived in the mind of the Father from all eternity. We were given form in the Heart of God the Son and imbued with the essence of love by the Holy Spirit. We are made in the image and likeness of the Most Holy Trinity and through the Trinity do we come into being deliberately and with divine purpose. What is our divine purpose? To glorify the Most Holy Trinity forever. God is love and His love is greater than everything; it embraces everything, it subjugates everything, it passes through everything. His love is infinite. Souls, who are the image of the Trinity, are so attractive to Him that He loves them with infinite passion, with the passion of a God. This is why the Father gave His own Son in order to save us, so that the reflection of the Trinity borne by each person should return to the Trinity. God founded the Church for the glory of the Most Holy Trinity. The reason the Word became flesh and offered Himself on the Cross was to glorify the Lord by giving Him holy souls and giving back to heaven, to the Godhead, what is divine in souls: a breath of the Most High, an image of the Trinity, an immortal reflection of God Himself. Souls are of such great value because they proceed from the Trinity. Their purpose, our purpose, is to return to the Trinity and glorify Him eternally. The Mass embodies this divine purpose because it is the greatest act of worship by the Church. Our worship is directed to the Father, through Christ the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Mass is never about glorifying ourselves. Jesus draws us into Himself, because He is inseparably joined to His Body, the Church, and offers to the Father the supreme and perfect act of love – His bloody Death and glorious Resurrection - for our salvation. His saving action glorifies the Trinity. It’s sad that most Catholics have no clue what is going on at Mass. Many find it boring because they don’t understand what is really happening on a spiritual level. They are ignorant of the immense love that is present for them. We are in a society that cultivates an appetite for entertainment and immediate gratification. Fortunately, the Mass will never satisfy on that selfish level. Over the next few bulletin articles I will go more in depth about what is taking place in our worship at Mass. Hopefully, this will help people give themselves more completely to God. May God be praised and may you be blessed! 10,000 Rosaries for Grafton! Pray, Pray, Pray! Most of you know, I will be leaving Grafton on Monday, June 1st. My new address will be: Aspen Park 2450 South 27th Ave. #205 Grand Forks, ND 58201 My phone and email stay the same: 701-213-1618 [email protected]. I will still be substituting for priests throughout the area (at Grafton – Oakwood July 19 & 26). Thank you for your love & support. It’s been an honor to live and serve at St. John’s and at Sacred Heart, Oakwood. As a going away gift to at least some of you, I’ll give the first 30 (1 per family) a copy of “Don’t you Dare Forgive. Unless…” (102 pages, with large print & short chapters.) Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday emphasize the mercy and forgiveness of Jesus: “Father forgive them, they know not what they do,” and our call to be merciful as our Father is. We all have experienced betrayal & hurt, and sometimes hold grudges. This is a book about healing, without pretending there was no injustice or wrong. After you’ve read the book, please pass it on. If you don’t get a copy, ask a friend who did, or give me a call. (# above). -- Fr. Bernie Schneider
