FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Praised be Jesus Christ! When I was a kid summer school was only for the flunkees (is that even a word?!). However, times have changed and so when I had a chance to take a summer course in northern Italy I jumped at it. It was the summer of 2003 and I spent a month near Lago Maggiore learning about how to train future priests. It was a wonderful experience as I rubbed elbows with priests from all around the world (I was the only American). Given my positive experiences of the past, I thought it would be fun to offer some summer school classes in the Columbia room at St. John’s school. The Columbia room now has a big screen T.V. as well as an impressive sound system and projector, so let’s put it to use by offering some simple pass/fail classes that are free and open to the public. If you’re afraid that you might not have the academic competency to pass the course, I’m certain that the instructor can be bribed with home-baked pies or high quality smokey treats. For the record, the classes will be held on Thursday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will generally be done by 8:00 p.m. The first class will be on June 12th and we will kick things off by watching the inspiring film “The Human Experience” followed by a brief discussion afterwards (the film is just over an hour long). Then on June 19th we will learn about the discernment of spirits according to St. Ignatius of Loyola. This will be a two-part class as we will continue our investigation into God’s will for us by engaging this topic again on July 17th. After a brief pause for the 4th of July we’ll meet again on July 10th. We’ll sit back and enjoy a slide show of the various places I visited when I was living in Rome (i.e. a travelogue of sorts). After the second part of St. Ignatius’s “discernment of spirits” on July 17th, our class on July 24th will be a great presentation about the Jesuits – insofar as Pope Francis is a Jesuit, it will be good for us to get to know his spiritual family. A week later on July 31st we’ll try to soak in the wisdom of Pope Francis by listening to a retreat he gave some years ago. Our August 7th class will entail a Catholic art tour with explanations of some of the most famous art in the world. We’ll see how beauty inspires the human heart to reach for God. Our last class will be on August 14th and we’ll end by watching a movie that is sure to inspire you to deep joy and some tears as well. I have some ideas about what movie I will show, but I want to keep that a secret until later in the summer. I’m working on having some refreshments available each evening that we meet and I hope you’ll consider coming out for one or all of our classes. Oh, and don’t worry about attaining a passing grade....I was just kidding about that! May God help us to spend these summer months all for His praise and glory! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin

NOTES FROM FR. MARTIN Summer School at St. John’s with Fr. Martin: Schools out, but not for everyone. Join in on the first session of summer school to be held on Thursday, June 12th. During this first lesson we will view the movie, “The Human Experience” with time for discussion afterwards. Class begins at 6:30pm in the Columbia room of the school. Save the Date: The 2014 Parish Pull will be held this year on Fri., July 11th at 7:00pm at the Marshfield Fairground. If you missed the first-ever Parish Pull last year, here’s your chance to make amends. Attention All Who Attend Mass at St. John’s on Saturdays. For your information, the Vox concert series will again be hosting concerts in Columbia Park. If you recall, last year they began doing this and it made parking more challenging because the concerts generally begin around 6pm. I want you to know when the concerts are scheduled to take place so that it doesn’t upset you when you arrive and somebody is in your favorite parking spot. At this point, the Vox concerts that are scheduled for Saturday evenings will be on , June 14th, June 21st, July 19th, and August 16th. Fr. Burish and his world-famous Kazoo band will be featured at the June 21st concert. Among other hits, he will be performing “I ain’t got nobody”. Pilgrimage to the Holy Land January 5th through the 15th is the next scheduled pilgrimage. The itinerary is near to being set for this trip to the Holy Land. Soon we will provide a brochure with the detailed information of the places we will go and the cost for this trip.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES Up, Up, and Away Assorted Saints and The Virtues Help us provide an outstanding Vacation Bible School experience for our young people by taking an “ornament” off of our tree (located in the back of church) and either purchase or donate money for the item listed. This year the children will be learning about 5 different Saints and the Virtues of Faith, Hope and Love. The children will “travel around the world:” to Ireland, Mexico, Peru, Turkey and the U.S., hearing the story of St. Patrick, St Juan Diego, St. Rose of Lima, St. Nicholas and St. Kateri. The registration form is available on the parish website. Totus Tuus: A Catholic bible camp will be held from Aug. 3rd

through Aug. 8th for Marshfield area students grades 1–12. Totus Tuus is a Latin phrase that means “Totally Yours”. Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke to speak at Marian Conference at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, La Crosse July 25th - 26th. The theme of this year’s conference is “Do Whatever He Tells You - Safeguarding Traditional Marriage in a Secular Culture”. The confer-ence will examine Our Lady of Guadalupe’s relationship to this issue that is on the forefront of debate in today’s society. The conference will be an excellent opportunity to enhance your faith and learn more about the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe and The Shrine in La Crosse. In addition to informational speakers, the schedule will in-clude Mass each day, group rosary prayer, and time for personal reflection. For more information call 630-584-1822. Family Dynamics Retreat to be held at the St. Anthony Spiritual-ity Center in Marathon from June 20th - 22nd, 2014. Arrive at 5:30 pm Friday, and depart by 1pm on Sunday. “Uncovering Problems We Can’t See”: Throughout life we experience conflict, friction and controversy. Family members won’t speak to each other, neighbors seek revenge, coworkers withhold valuable information. We naturally look outward for blame. Why am I always the victim? Why don’t they see they are the problem? Using Arbinger Core theories, this retreat will help us as we grow in faith and explore Self Deception: Having a problem, not knowing I have a problem and resisting the possibility that I might have a problem. Be ready for serious self-reflection and the chance to look carefully and deeply at our relationships with our families. Presented by Wendy Mitch, Arbinger licensed facilitator. Offering: $170. For more information call 715-443-2236.
