Guidelines to follow at St. John Neumann Parish

Congregants should plan on restricted seating, a change in the

reception of Communion in order to ensure social distancing, and

other appropriate measures upon entering and exiting churches.

The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday

Mass remains in place. All who are especially vulnerable

or simply uncomfortable attending a public Liturgy are

encouraged to remain at home and if possible, view Mass

via live streams, which will continue in local parishes.

If you are SICK, stay home and limit your contact with

others. Please be concerned about others.

*Never Forget Sanitizer and Mask when you come to Church*

Parishioners should bring and be prepared to wear their own masks

and, a bottle of hand sanitizer for use upon entering, before receiv-

ing Communion, after receiving Communion, and after exiting the

church.

Today’s Readings:

Family is of great import in the wide scope of God’s work here on earth. God assures Abram that his descendants will be as numerous as

the stars in the sky, though at the time prospects for even one child were bleak, and later he was ready to offer his only son in a test of his

faith. Together Mary and Joseph brought their infant Son to the temple to consecrate him to the Lord. Listening to today’s readings, let

us ask for God’s grace upon our own families and our descendants.

The New Year begins with several and severe challenges - primarily caused by the pandemic, but also by the lack of love and

understanding among people. Keep focused throughout the New Year on the power of

God in your life. Make Church and the Love of Christ found within the Holy Church a

PRIORITY in your own life and in the life of your family. With the power of God, you’ll be

able to take on the GREATEST of challenges. Happy New Year!

Holy Family

Today, we celebrate the feast of The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. This most blessed family serves as a model for all families for all time. Although the hidden of life Christ is not fully revealed to us in the Scriptures, these years of Jesus with Mary and Joseph do show us the importance of His daily life in the ordinary time of fam-ily life. It is in Nazareth where the school of the Gospel begins. It is here that three important lessons are provided – the lesson of silence, the lesson of family life, and the lesson of work.

The Holy Family is the beginning of countless other holy families. The Council recalled that holiness is the vocation of all the baptized. In our age, as in the past, there is no lack of witnesses to the “gospel of the family”, even if they are not well known or have not been proclaimed saints by the Church– Gratissimam Sane (Letter to Families), #23. 1994.

Essentially, our readings remind us of our responsibilities and duties in the family. In the encyclical Familiaris Consortio, which is a component of our Christian Discipleship Formation Program (CDFP), Pope John Paul II highlights the family as the foundation of formation where love and knowledge of God are infused and where children and parents alike share the value of pastoral care. Moreover, it describes the family as a “domestic church,” the foundational Church where holiness is awakened, nurtured and lived out. The Second Vatican Council further elevates the family as a center of faith and mission, a witness to the message of Christ and an agent of transformation. The family, therefore, is a living reality that is called to be a vessel of peace, defender and herald of the Word, temple of the Spirit, and steward of God’s love.

To gather round the Bethlehem grotto contemplating there the Holy Family, enables us to appreciate the gift of family intimacy in a special way, and spurs us to offer human warmth and concrete solidarity in those unfortunately numerous situations which, for various reasons, lack peace, harmony, in a word, lack “family”.

Today, in the joyful atmosphere of Christmas, the Church, reliving with fresh wonder the mystery of Emmanuel, God-with-us, leads us to contemplate the Holy Family of Nazareth. From contemplation of this admirable model, the Church draws the values to hold up to the women and men of all times and all cultures.

This Sunday we are celebrating the Feast of the Holy Family of Nazareth, and it is very significant that this year it takes place the day after Christmas. I would therefore like to extend my special good wishes to families: A Merry Christmas and a happy feast of Holy Family to you all!

On this day, let us ask for the intercession of the Holy Family that we may have the strength and courage to stand against all those who seek to destroy the life of traditional families. Let us also pray for the intercession of St. Joseph, who was the Protector of the Child Jesus and Mary, and is the Protector of the Holy Catholic Church.
